Fish Sticks Rally in Fifth Inning to Stun 4 out of 5 Dentists 4-2

Joey of Fish Sticks gave up two runs on five hits in a 4-2 win

Down 1-0, the Fish Sticks scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and held on to beat 4 out of 5 Dentists 4-2, snapping their five game win streak.

The Fish Sticks sent Joey to the mound to square off against Ron of the Dentists in what would be a pitcher’s duel. Ron led off the game with a single for the Dentists, but didn’t advance further as Chris and Mike each grounded out to end the top of the first. Ron retired Dinger to start the bottom of the first, and following a Joey single, Blose grounded out to center field to end the inning.

Joey retired Geoff and Ron in the top of the second, and Ron quickly retired Vassallo and Dinger in the bottom half of the inning to keep the game scoreless.

With the score 0-0, Chris led off the top of the third with a solo home run, putting the Dentists ahead by a run. Following a Mike groundout to center, Geoff singled with one out. He was stranded at first, however, as Ron flew out to the pitchers mound to end the threat.

Joey was retired to start the bottom of the third, and Blose followed with a one out single. But Ron stranded him there, as Vassallo grounded out to left field for the second out of the inning.

Chris singled to start the top of the fourth, his second hit of the game, but Mike and Geoff each flew out to center field, stranding him at first base.

Down 1-0, Dinger flew out to left to start the bottom of the third, and Joey followed with a one-out single. The Sticks couldn’t tie the game though, as Blose grounded out to end the fourth.

Joey retired Ron and Chris in order in the top of the fifth as both grounded out. Vassallo got his first hit of the game, a single, to lead off the bottom of the fifth. He advanced to second when Dinger followed with a single of his own. A costly throwing error by the Dentists allowed Vassallo to move to third, a play which proved crucial. With no outs, Joey grounded out to left field, but Vassallo scored on the play, tying the game at one. With one out and Dinger on second, Blose crushed a two-run bomb to right field, putting the Sticks ahead 3-1, their first lead of the game. Vassallo stepped to the plate and hit a deep home run to left field for back-to-back homers, pushing the Gay Fish lead to 4-1. Dinger flew out to right field to end the fifth, but the Fish Sticks secured a three run lead heading into the sixth.

The Sticks made a call to the bullpen in the sixth, bringing in their closer, Blose. Blose got Mike to ground out to center field for the first out of the inning. With one out, Geoff connected on an inside pitch for a solo homer, cutting the deficit to 4-2. But Blose wasn’t rattled, as he got Ron to fly out to center to end the game, notching his second save in as many opportunities.
