Despite getting crushed in their previous two games and giving up a combined 37 runs, Bobby Brown bounced back against the Ham Slams, holding them to only 2 runs in a 5-2 win.
The Ham Slams started Steve on the mound in his first career pitching appearance, and he debuted the league’s newest signature pitch, the windmill. It worked early, as Gaurav flew out to the mound to start the game. Mark followed with a double, but Steve held him at first as he got Brad to fly out to left for the second out of the inning.
Bobby Brown sent their ace Gaurav to the mound, hoping to play a low-scoring game after two consecutive beat downs. He started great, striking out Steve for the first out, and then getting Anthony to fly out to Brad in left for the second out of the inning.
Steve cruised through the top of the second, as Josh and Gaurav were retired in order for a scoreless inning.
Steve, making his EWL pitching debut, started off well before getting into trouble late
The Slams got to Gaurav in the bottom of the second, breaking the scoreless tie. Evan led off the inning with a solo shot to right field, putting the Slams up 1-0. Quinn followed with a single, and Derek followed with a single, but Gaurav got the first out of the inning when he caught Quinn in between bases with the ball on the mound. With a runner on first, Gaurav got Steve to ground out to left, stranding the runner and holding the deficit to a single run.
Bobby Brown quickly tied the game, as Mark crushed a solo shot to deep right field to lead off the top of the third, making the score 1-1. Brad followed with a single, but Steve maintained the tie, stranding the runner at first by getting Josh and Gaurav to ground out consecutively.
The Slams bounced back in the bottom of the third, as Anthony led off the inning with a triple. The next batter, Evan, followed with another triple, scoring Anthony and putting the Slams back in front 2-1. The Slams couldn’t extend the lead, however, as Gaurav escaped another big inning. He stranded Evan at third by retiring Quinn and Derek, ending the third.
For the second consecutive inning, Mark led off with a solo shot, and the Slams lead had evaporated immediately. Tied at 2-2, Bobby Brown couldn’t take the lead. Brad flew out to Steve at the mound for the first out, and after Josh singled, Steve stranded him at first by getting Gaurav to ground out to center to end the inning.
Gaurav shifted into cruise control in the bottom of the fourth, confusing the Ham Slams for the rest of the game. Steve singled to lead off the inning, but Anthony followed by flying out for the first out of the inning. The next batter, Evan, singled, putting runners on first and second. Gaurav escaped the jam, however, as he got Quinn to ground out to center, stranding two runners and maintaining the 2-2 tie.
Gaurav retired 7 of the final 10 batters he faced in a complete game win, moving to 3-1 on the year
Mark led off the top of the fifth with a single, the third consecutive inning he started with a base hit. Steve retired the next batter, Brad, for the first out, but got into trouble with one out. Josh, hitless on the day to that point, blasted a two-run homer, scoring Mark and putting Bobby Brown up 4-2. Steve avoided a big inning, getting Gaurav to fly out to the mound to end the fifth.
The Slams couldn’t even things up in the bottom of the fifth, as Derek led off the inning by grounding out to right. Steve followed with a one-out double, but Gaurav held him at second, as he got Anthony to ground out to left for the second out of the inning.
Up 4-2, Bobby Brown added an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Mark led off the inning with a single, the fourth consecutive inning he led off with a hit, and moved to second when Brad grounded out to left for the first out. The next batter, Josh, hit a double off the fence, scoring Mark from second and giving Bobby Brown a 5-2 lead. Steve got Gaurav to fly out to the mound for the second out of the inning, and the Slams would trail by 3 runs heading into their final at-bat.
Gaurav stayed in the game to close things out for Bobby Brown, and he was efficient. He got Evan and Quinn to fly out in order, ending the game and giving Bobby Brown a win after four consecutive losses.
The win moved Bobby Brown to 3-5 on the season, one game back of the Ham Slams, who fell to 4-4.
