Shady Characters Rally Late, Squeeze Past Guacamol-yay to Win 4-3

After trailing 3-1 at the midpoint of their season opener, Shady Characters rallied in the fourth and fifth innings, pulling ahead 4-3 and hanging on to win. Led by Tom who went 3-for-4 and pitched the complete game win, Shady Characters, who finished fourth in 2020, started the 2021 season strong.

Tom retired Guacamol-yay in order in the top of the first, sending Jan and Josh K down.

Shady Characters got on the board early in the bottom of the first. Dylan led off with a double, and two batters later, Tom hit an RBI single to score him. Josh K, Guacamol-yay’s starter, struck out Lucas to end the inning with the score 1-0.

Guacamol-yay evened things up in the top of the second when their newest free agent signing, Kyle, hit a solo shot in the first at-bat of his wiffle career. Ryan followed with a single, but Tom escaped without further damage, retiring Jude and Jan to strand the runner.

With the game tied at 1-1, Josh K got into a groove. He retired Jason, making his EWL debut, and then struck out Dylan to end the inning.

Tom matched Josh K in the top of the third, retiring Josh K before striking out Kyle to end the inning, and the score remained tied.

Tom singled with one out in the bottom of the third, but Josh K stranded him, retiring Lucas to end the inning.

Guacamol-yay would pull ahead for their first lead in the top of the fourth. Ryan doubled to start the inning, and two batters later, Jan hit a one-out triple, scoring Ryan to put Guacamol-yay ahead 2-1. Josh K then singled, scoring Jan, and Gucamol-yay led 3-1. Tom finally escaped the inning, retiring Kyle for the second out.

Shady Characters bounced right back in the bottom of the fourth. Jason got his first career hit, a triple, to lead off the inning. Dylan drove him in with an RBI double, making the score 3-2. Mike hit a sacrifice fly, moving Dylan to third, and Tom hit an RBI double to score Dylan, tying the game at 3-3. Josh K then retired Lucas to end the inning.

Jude doubled with one out in the top of the fifth, but Guacamol-yay couldn’t pull ahead. Tom retired Jan to strand the runner, ending the inning.

After pitching four innings, Josh K left the mound and was replaced by Kyle, making his first career appearance. Jason started the bottom of the fifth with a double, and two batters later, Mike hit an RBI single, scoring Jason to give Shady Characters a 4-3 lead. Kyle then retired Tom to end the inning, and Guacamol-yay trailed by one run.

Tom remained in the game to close things out, and he was efficient. He retired Josh K and Kyle in order, ending the game, giving Shady Characters a 4-3 win.

The win moved Shady Characters to 1-0 on the season, and the loss dropped Guacamol-yay to 0-1.
