Guthrie and Blose Lead Cookies & Cream to 7-3 Win Over Ham Slams

Guthrie pitched a complete game win, allowing only three runs, and both he and Blose each homered twice to carry Cookies & Cream to a 7-3 win over the Ham Slams.

Tim doubled with one out in the top of the first, but Guthrie escaped the inning without allowing a run, retiring Josh to end the inning.

Guthrie would provide his own run support in the bottom of the first, leading off the game with a homer. It was Guthrie’s fourth career leadoff homer and his second of the season. Tim, the Ham Slams starter, then retired Blose and Joey to end the inning, and the score was 1-0 in favor of Cookies & Cream.

Guthrie stranded another Ham Slams runner in the top of the second. Dave hit a one-out single, but the Slams couldn’t capitalize, as Tim was retired for the second out of the inning.

Cookies added a few to their lead in the bottom of the second. Dinger singled to start the inning, and two batters later, Blose hit a one-out two-run shot to center, putting Cookies & Cream ahead 3-0. Joey followed with a double, but Tim stranded the runner, retiring Dinger to end the inning.

The Slams continued to struggle at the plate in the top of the third. Josh and Dan were retired in order, and Guthrie had pitched three scoreless innings.

Cookies gave Guthrie more run support in the bottom of the third. Guthrie doubled, and he scored from second when Blose grounded out for the first out of the inning. Joey followed with a solo homer, and Cookies led 5-0.

The Slams got on the board in the top of the fourth. Dave singled and moved to third on a Tim double. Josh followed with a high fly to right, and Dave tagged and scored on the play. The sac fly cut the score to 5-1, but the Slams couldn’t extend the rally, as Guthrie retired Dan to end the inning.

Cookies & Cream made up for the runs in the bottom of the fourth. Guthrie led off with a solo homer, his second of the game, and Blose followed with a solo shot, also his second of the game. The back-to-back jacks put Cookies & Cream ahead 7-1. Tim retired Dinger and Joey to end the inning, but the Slams trailed by six.

Dave started the top of the fifth with a double, and Tim drove him in with an RBI triple, cutting the Slams’ deficit to 7-2. Josh then hit an RBI single, scoring Tim from third, and the score was 7-3 with no outs. Guthrie buckled down, however, retiring Dan and Dave in order, ending the inning with the Slams trailing by four.

Cookies & Cream had scored in every inning so far, but Tim finally pitched a scoreless frame in the bottom of the fifth, sending Guthrie and Blose down in order.

Down 7-3, the Slams looked to rally in the top of the sixth. Tim led off with a single and moved from first to third on a Josh single. The Slams had runners on the corners with no outs, but as he had done all game, Guthrie stranded more Ham Slams. He got both Dan and Dave to fly out to the mound, stranding both runners to end the game and give Cookies & Cream the 7-3 victory.

The win moved Cookies & Cream to 12-5 on the season, and the loss dropped the Ham Slams to 7-10.
