Erich had a historically dominant performance in game 2, going 8-for-8, hitting for the cycle twice.

After sputtering on offense in a game 1 loss, Shady Characters exploded for nineteen runs in game 2, as Erich hit for the cycle twice in the same game, and the best-of-five first round series was evened at 1-1. Erich was 8-for-8 with two singles, two doubles, two triples, two home runs, six runs scored, and five RBI, becoming the first player in EWL history to hit for the cycle twice in one playoff game. Cheap Goats got to Dylan early in the top of the first, but after taking an early lead, they wouldn’t score again until late in the game when they trailed by double digits. Jordan led off the game with a triple, and he scored when Joey followed with an RBI triple that made the score 1-0. Christian then singled, scoring Joey, and Cheap Goats led 2-0. Just when it looked like Cheap Goats may jump out to a big lead in both the game and the series, Dylan retired Dinger and Jordan to end the inning, and his offense took over in the bottom half of the inning.

Ham Slams Look to Shock Wiffle World in First Round Matchup with Questionable Outfit

27 Jul

The #4 seed Ham Slams hope to carry their second half momentum into the first round and pull off a historic upset of the #1 seed defending champions Questionable Outfit

The #4 seed Ham Slams hope to carry their second half momentum into the first round and pull off a historic upset of the #1 seed defending champions Questionable Outfit

Although it is the #4 vs. #1 seed matchup, the first round playoff series between the Ham Slams and Questionable Outfit will be the most anticipated first round series in recent memory. The Ham Slams are hoping to make history as the first #4 seed to win an EWL series, and Questionable Outfit are planning to repeat their history of first round success, return to the Wiffle Series for the third consecutive season, and become the first team in EWL history to repeat as Wiffle Champions.

The Ham Slams have history going against them, as the #1 seeds have a 4-0 all-time series record in the first round of the playoffs, and #1 seeds have went 12-2 in first round games. Questionable Outfit is 2-0 in first round series and 6-1 overall in first round games, with their only loss coming in their first playoff game last season, when they lost to Eastbound & Dahn in game 1 before winning games 2, 3, and 4. The Ham Slams are 0-3 in first round series, 4-9 in first round games, and have never advanced to the second round.

The Ham Slams have threatened in the first round, but have narrowly missed advancing to the Wiffle Series multiple times. In 2012, in their first year of existence, they pushed the eventual champion Fish Sticks to the brink, losing in game 5 of the first round. In 2013 they were swept by eventual runners-up Questionable Outfit, and last year, in 2014, they took eventual runners-up Cookies & Cream to a decisive game 5 before falling short.

Tim has led the Ham Slams second half resurgence

Tim has led the Ham Slams second half resurgence

Questionable Outfit are the defending EWL champions, and, like the three champions before them, have an opportunity to become the first repeat champions in history. By advancing past the first round, they would also become the first team to reach the Wiffle Series in three consecutive seasons. Questionable Outfit swept the Ham Slams in 2013 before being swept in the Wiffle Series by Cookies & Cream. Last year, in 2014, they defeated Eastbound & Dahn in 4 games before beating Cookies & Cream in 5 games to claim the title.

The Ham Slams finished in last place in the league standings with an 8-12 record, but they are likely the strongest #4 seed in EWL playoff history. After finishing the first half 1-9, the Ham Slams experienced a dramatic turnaround, going 7-3 in the second half of the season, which included a franchise-record five game winning streak.

Questionable Outfit were consistent, as usual, going 7-3 in both the first and second half, and put together a six game winning streak before losing their last game of the regular season, which had no playoff implications.

Bob and Tom combined for 69 home runs and 99 RBI in 2015

Bob and Tom combined for 69 home runs and 99 RBI in 2015

Questionable Outfit were historically dominant on offense in 2015, breaking multiple records, particularly with their power bats. All four players are a threat to go deep, but they also had three players in the top 5 league leaders for batting average and were the only team to hit over .500 for the season. With Morrison out for the playoffs, Bob is likely the most feared bat in the league, and his historic numbers back it up. Reilly has improved on offense each year and is a dominant power threat. Tom may be the most underrated and overlooked hitter in the league, and Mike picked up where he left off in 2013 after missing 2014, finishing 4th in batting average and slugging while tying the league record for triples. They are as strong as any team defensively, but they present as a Jekyll and Hyde from the mound. Reilly turned in another elite pitching season, but their other pitchers were spotty and inconsistent.

The Ham Slams had the league’s worst run differential, but most of that could be attributed to a few terrible losses. The Slams finished third in most offensive categories, but turned on the gas in the second half of the season. In particular, Tim went on a rampage at the plate after starting the season ice cold, hitting .698 over his final 7 games. Dan was consistent throughout the season, finishing 3rd in batting average. and going deep in 6 of his final 7 games. Alan played in only 2 games in July, but hit well and became a strong fielder as the season progressed. Steve took a step back from his 27 homer All-EWL campaign in 2014, but when on his game, he is as good a fielder as any player in the league and hit 7 home runs in his final 5 games after hitting 2 in his first 10 games. Adam hit .590 with 6 homers in his final 4 games, but has only played in 4 games in the past 6 weeks. The Slams have improved in fielding dramatically over the course of the season, and it may not be a liability for them in the first round series. Their pitching has also improved, and is anchored by Charlie, who started the season 0-7 before reeling off 4 consecutive victories on the mound.

Questionable Outfit won the season series 6-1 and won the first 6 matchups between the two teams before the Ham Slams beat them in their final matchup, the next-to-last game of the 2015 regular season. The Slams have been on the rise all season, but Questionable Outfit are the defending champs with the most potent offense in league history. It should be a great series as the Slams try to carry their momentum and confidence from a strong week 10 into the first round against the legends of the wiffle diamond on Questionable Outfit.

Questionable Outfit Storm Past Eastbound & Dahn 10-6 to Return to Wiffle Series

6 Aug

Tom had 6 hits in the series-clinching win to lead Questionable Outfit to a second consecutive Wiffle Series berth

Tom had 6 hits in the series-clinching win to lead Questionable Outfit to a second consecutive Wiffle Series berth

Despite a late rally, Eastbound & Dahn couldn’t extend their series with Questionable Outfit, as the Questionable offense was too much in a 10-6 series clinching victory.

Nate, who had pitched brilliantly in Eastbound’s game 1 victory over Questionable Outfit, started on the mound in game 4. He got into trouble early, and he didn’t last long.

Kimble led off the game with a single, and he scored when the next batter, Bob, crushed a two-run homer to put Questionable ahead 2-0. Morrison followed with a solo homer, and the back-to-back home runs gave Questionable a 3-0 lead before registering an out. Tom would later triple with one out, but Nate avoided further damage in the first, stranding the runner.

Bob would take the hill for Questionable Outfit, and he got off to a much better start than Nate. Steve led off the bottom of the first with a single, but he was stranded as Bob pitched a scoreless inning.

Nate bounced back in the top of the second, allowing a leadoff single to Morrison but retiring the next two batters to hold the score at 3-0.

Eastbound would get on the board in the bottom of the second. With one out, Steve crushed a solo homer to left, making the score 3-1. Frosty, an EWL postseason legend making his first appearance of 2014 and his first career appearance with Eastbound, followed with a solo bomb, and the back-to-back homers cut the deficit to 3-2. Bob then retired Nate to end the inning and maintain the one-run lead.

Nate got into more trouble in the top of the third, and he didn’t give himself much leeway before removing himself from the game. Morrison singled with one out, and the next batter, Reilly, crushed a two-run homer to left-center, making the score 5-2. Nate pulled himself from the mound, and Eastbound turned to Christian from the bullpen. The first batter he faced, Tom, doubled, and he moved to third when Bob followed with a single. Questionable had runners on second and third and it looked as if they would blow the game open, but Christian retired Morrison to end the inning, stranding two runners.

Morrison went 5-for-7 with a solo homer in the win

Morrison went 5-for-7 with a solo homer in the win

Eastbound would chip away at the Questionable lead in the bottom of the third. With one out, Steve hit a solo homer to left, his second of the game, cutting the score to 5-3. Eastbound couldn’t add any more runs in the bottom of the third.

Questionable would make up for the lost run sin the top of the fourth. Reilly led off the inning with a double and moved to third when Tom also doubled. Bob then hit a groundball to right, which Nate scooped up for an out, but both Reilly and Tom scored on the play. Christian retired the next batter, Morrison, but Questionable had extended their lead to 7-3.

Bob breezed through the bottom of the fourth, retiring the side in order.

Questionable would add more to their lead in the top of the fifth. Tom singled with one out, and Bob followed with his second two-run homer of the game, moving the score to 9-3. Morrison would follow with a single, but Christian retired Reilly to avoid further damage.

Down 9-3 and with their season slipping away, Eastbound showed heart in the bottom of the fifth inning. Steve led off the inning with a solo homer, his third bomb of the game, cutting the score to 9-4. Frosty followed with a triple, and with one out, Christian lined a two-run homer to right field, making the score 9-6. Steve came back to the plate with one out, but couldn’t hit a fourth homer in as many at-bats, and Bob escaped with a three-run lead.

Tom led off the top of the sixth with a triple, and he scored when Bob hit a sacrifice fly, making the score 10-6. Morrison and Reilly each followed with one out singles, and it looked as if Questionable would put the game away for certain, but Christian retired Tom, stranding both runners.

Trailing four runs and down to their last two outs of the 2014 season, Eastbound couldn’t put together another rally in the bottom of the sixth. Frosty flew out to Bob for the first out of the inning, and Nate grounded out to Tom in left for the second out, ending the game and giving Questionable Outfit a 10-6 win.

Questionable Outfit had won the best-of-five first round series 3 games to 1, clinching a spot in the Wiffle Series for the second consecutive season. They will face their rival, Cookies & Cream, in a rematch of last year’s final.

After taking Cookies & Cream to the brink in round 1 of the 2013 playoffs, Eastbound & Dahn bowed out early again in 2014.
