Nate of Shady Characters Named Pabst Blue Ribbon Wiffler of the Week

After surprising the EWL with a strong rookie season in 2022, Nate came firing out of the gates in 2023. He led defending champions Shady Characters to two week one victories and finished the week leading the league in home runs, RBI, and batting average, hitting 1.000 over six week one at-bats.

In a 14-3 blowout of Jack Shack, Nate went 4-for-4 with a single, three home runs, three runs scored, and five RBI.

In a narrow come-from-behind win over the Guac Boys, he went 2-for-2 with a single, a homer, a run scored, and an RBI.

In total, Nate went a perfect 6-for-6 with two singles, four home runs, four runs scored, and six RBI in week 1.

This is the second time Nate has been voted Wiffler of the Week. He was also named Wiffler of the Week for week 5 of the 2022 season.

Jack Shack Storm Back in Bottom of the Sixth and Jared’s Walk-Off Homer in Ninth Completes Epic 9-8 Comeback Win Over Cheap Goats

Jack Shack trailed 7-1 in the bottom of the sixth but rallied to score six runs, forcing extra innings, and later defeated Cheap Goats when Jared hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth. Rookies Jared, Jon, and Ryan each homered (Ryan twice), as Jack Shack completed a highly improbable week one victory.

Jon made his first career start on the mound for Jack Shack, and he fell behind early. Joey led off the game with a double, and he scored from second when Miller grounded out for the first out of the inning. John then retired Christian to end the inning, and Cheap Goats led 1-0.

Christian made his first start of the season for Cheap Goats, and he retired Jack Shack in order in the bottom of the first, sending Josh and Jared down consecutively.

Jon retired Dinger and Chris in order in the top of the second, and Jack Shack evened up the score in the bottom half of the inning.

Jon led off the bottom of the second with a solo homer, tying the game at 1-1. Two batters later, Josh hit a one-out triple, but Christian stranded him, retiring Jared to end the inning.

Jon went 4-for-7 with two singles, a triple, a home run, three runs scored, and two RBI in the Jack Shack victory.

Cheap Goats immediately bounced back in the top of the third. After retiring Joey for the first out of the inning, Jon gave up a solo homer to Miller, putting Cheap Goats ahead 2-1. The next batter, Christian, launched a solo shot to right-center, and the back-to-back homers gave Cheap Goats a 3-1 lead. Jon then retired Dinger to end the inning.

Jon singled to start the bottom of the third, but Christian stranded him, retiring Ryan and Josh, and the score remained 3-1.

Jon got back on track in the top of the fourth, sending Chris and Joey down in order. Christian matched him in the bottom of the inning, retiring Jared and Jon consecutively.

Cheap Goats threatened in the top of the fifth, but Jon escaped unscathed. Christian doubled with one out, and Dinger followed with a double, putting runners on second and third. Jon got Chris to ground out to left, however, stranding both runners, and the Cheap Goats lead remained 3-1.

Christian continued to pitch effectively in the bottom of the fifth, sending Ryan and Josh down in order.

Cheap Goats opened up a big lead in the top of the sixth. Joey led off with a solo homer, and Miller followed with a solo shot of his own. The second back-to-back homers of the game for Cheap Goats created a 5-1 lead. Christian then doubled, and two batters later, Chris hit a one-out RBI triple, scoring Christian to extend the lead to 6-1. Joey then doubled, scoring Chris, and Cheap Goats led 7-1. Jon finally escaped the inning by retiring Miller to strand Joey at second, and Jack Shack trailed by six runs heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Cheap Goats had developed a reputation for blowing leads late in games, and the bad luck reared its head again in week 1. Down six runs, Jack Shack’s lineup, which included three rookies, went on an improbable run to tie the game and force extra innings. Jared led off the bottom of the sixth with a double and was caught out when the next batter, Jon, hit a triple. Jared was caught in between bases, and Jack Shack were down to their final out. Ryan hit a one-out double, scoring Jon, and the deficit was 7-2. Josh then singled, scoring Ryan from second, and the Cheap Goats lead was 7-3. Jared followed with a double, putting runners on second and third with one out. Jon singled, scoring Josh from third, and Jack Shack had narrowed the score to 7-4. Down three with two men on and one out, Ryan cleared the bases with a three-run shot to right-center, which tied the game at 7-7. Christian retired the next batter, Josh, to end the inning, but Jack Shack had scored six runs with one out to extend the game.

Ryan’s three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth tied the game at 7-7, completing Jack Shack’s improbable comeback to tie the game and force extra innings.

Christian led off the top of the seventh with a double, putting the go-ahead run in scoring position, but Jon buckled down. He retired Dinger and Chris in order, stranding the runner at second, and the score remained 7-7.

Jared started the bottom of the seventh with a single, putting the winning run on base with no outs. Christian got the next two batters to ground out, however, stranding the runner and sending the game to an eighth inning.

Joey doubled to start the top of the eighth, and Cheap Goats once again had the go-ahead run in scoring position with no outs. Once again Jon cracked down, retiring Miller and Christian to strand Joey at second with the score 7-7.

Josh tripled to lead off the bottom of the eighth, and Jack Shack had the winning run on third with no outs. Christian once again escaped the jam, retiring Jared and Jon without allowing the runner to advance, and the game would go to the ninth inning.

Jon had reached his innings limit for the week, and Jack Shack turned to Josh from the bullpen. Dinger led off the top of the ninth with a single, and Cheap Goats had the go-ahead run on base with no outs for the third consecutive extra inning. Josh got Chris to ground out for the first out of the inning, but Joey followed with an RBI double, scoring Dinger, and Cheap Goats had reclaimed the lead. Jack Shack intentionally walked Miller to put runners on first and second, and the strategic move paid off. Josh got Christian to ground out, stranding two runners, and Cheap Goats led by a run heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Christian had also reached his weekly innings limit after pitching the first eight innings of the game, and Cheap Goats brought Dinger back to the mound. The first batter he faced, Ryan, launched a solo shot to right, his second homer of the game, tying the score at 8-8. Cheap Goats immediately made a pitching change, bringing Miller to the mound. He retired Josh, the first batter he faced. The next batter, Jared, crushed a solo homer to center, a walk-off bomb that gave Jack Shack one of the most memorable and unexpected week 1 victories in EWL history. Jack Shack had come from six runs behind in the bottom of the sixth and one run behind in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Cheap Goats 9-8.

The win moved Jack Shack to 1-1 on the season, and the loss dropped Cheap Goats to 0-2.

Tom’s Walk-off Homer in the Bottom of the Sixth Caps Shady Characters’ 3-2 Comeback Win Over Guac Boys

Tom’s walk-off homer in the bottom of the sixth gave Shady Characters a 3-2 come-from-behind victory to remain undefeated after one week of the 2023 EWL season

Tom went deep twice, including the game-winning walk-off homer in the bottom of the sixth, as defending champions Shady Characters moved to 2-0 on the season with a dramatic 3-2 win over the Guac Boys in week 1. Tom and Nate each had two hits, and Lucas pitched four innings of scoreless relief as Shady Characters, who started the 2022 season 10-0, remained undefeated one week into the 2023 season.

Tom started on the mound for Shady Characters, and he fell behind early. He allowed a one-out single to Bohn, and Alec drove him in with an RBI triple, making the score 1-0. Tom then retired Form to strand Alec at third, ending the inning.

Bohn started for the Guac Boys, and he retired Dylan and Mike in order in the bottom of the firs.t

The Guac Boys added another run in the top of the second when Brum led off the inning with a solo homer. Tom retired Bohn and Alec to end the inning, and the Guac Boys led 2-0.

Bohn retired the side in order in the bottom of the second, sending Tom and Jason down consecutively.

Tom had met his innings limit for week 1, and Shady Characters brought Lucas to the mound in the top of the third. He allowed a leadoff single to Form, but stranded him at first, retiring Brum and Bohn to end the inning.

Bohn had also reached his week 1 innings limit, and Guac Boys turned to Brum. After retiring Lucas to start the bottom of the third, he allowed a solo shot to Nate, cutting the score to 1-0. Brum then retired Dylan to end the inning.

Nate continued his hot start to the 2023 season, going 2-2 for with a single and a solo homer in the Shady Characters win.

Lucas rolled through the top of the fourth, retiring Alec and Form in order.

Shady Characters evened things up in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Tom launched a homer to right-center, tying the game at 2-2. Brum then retired Jason to end the inning.

Nate singled with one out in the bottom of the fifth, and Dylan followed with a single, putting runners on first and second with one out. Defending Wiffler of the Year Mike came to the plate, but Brum escaped the jam, retiring Mike to strand both runners, ending the inning.

Lucas cruised through the top of the sixth, retiring Form and Brum in order.

Lucas was dominant in relief for Shady Characters, allowing only two hits in four shutout innings.

With the score tied at 2-2, the first batter in the bottom of the sixth, Tom, put the game to rest quickly. He hit a towering fly ball to right-center, it cleared the fence, and the walk-off homer gave Shady Characters a 3-2 win.

The win moved Shady Characters to 2-0 on the season, and the loss dropped the Guac Boys to 1-1.

Three Guac Boys Deliver Five Hits Each in 12-3 Rout of Cheap Goats

Brum went 6-for-7 with three singles, a double, two homers, four runs scored, and three RBI to lead Guac Boys to an opening day blowout of Cheap Goats

Brum went deep twice and had six hits and Alec and Bohn each contributed five hits as the Guac Boys crushed Cheap Goats 12-3 in their 2023 season opener. Bohn pitched the complete game, limiting Cheap Goats to three runs on seven hits in a game that was never close.

Bohn allowed a leadoff double to Joey in the top of the first, but Cheap Goats couldn’t capitalize. Miller and Christian each flew out to the mound, stranding the runner and ending the inning.

The Guac Boys immediately got on the board in the bottom of the first when Brum hit a leadoff homer off Dinger, the second leadoff homer of his career. Two batters later, Alec hit a solo shot, putting the Guac Boys ahead 2-0. Dinger then retired Form to end the inning.

Bohn rolled through the top of the second, retiring Dinger and Chris in order.

Alec then singled, scoring Bohn, and the lead was 4-0. Dinger retired the next two batters, Form and Brum, stranding Alec on base and ending the inning.

Joey doubled to start the top of the third, and he scored from second when Miller followed with an RBI double, cutting the deficit to 4-1. Cheap Goats couldn’t rally, however, as Bohn retired Christian and Dinger to strand Miller, and the Guac Boys led by three.

The Guac Boys continued to extend their lead in the bottom of the third. Bohn led off with a double and moved to third when Alec followed with a double. Form then doubled, scoring Bohn, and the score was 5-1. Brum singled, scoring Bohn, and the Guac Boys lead was 6-1. Bohn then singled to score Alexc, and the lead was extended to 7-1. It looked like things could get ugly, but Dinger retired Alec and Form to strand two runners, ending the inning.

Cheap Goats got a run back in the top of the fourth. Chris doubled, and he scored from second when Joey grounded out for the first out of the inning. Bohn then retired Miller, and the score was 7-2.

The Guac Boys added all of the insurance runs they would need in the bottom of the fourth. Brum led off the inning with his second solo shot of the game, making the score 8-2. Bohn doubled, and Alec drove him in with a two-run bomb, his second homer of the game, and the lead was 10-2. Form tripled, and Brum followed with a double, putting two runners in scoring position with no outs. Bohn singled, clearing the bases, and the Guac Boys led 12-2. Alec followed with a single to put two runners on, but Dinger finally escaped the inning with Form flew out to the mound and Dinger doubled up Alec, ending the inning.

Brum singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth, but Dinger avoided further damage, retiring Bohn and Alec to strand the runner, and the score remained 12-3.

The Guac Boys kept Bohn on the mound to close things out in the top of the sixth. He allowed a leadoff single to Miller, but he once again stranded a Cheap Goats runner. He retired Christian and Dinger, stranding Miller at second, ending the game, and giving the Guac Boys a 12-3 win.

Shady Characters Erupt in Twelve-Run Fifth Inning to Pull Away and Beat Jack Shack 14-3 in Season Opener

Nate homered three times and went a perfect 4-for-4 to lead Shady Characters to victory in their first game of 2023

The season-opening game for the 2023 EWL season was a rematch of last year’s Wiffle Series championship, featuring two-time defending champions Shady Characters and last year’s runners-up Jack Shack. Jack Shack led 3-2 through four-and-a-half innings before Shady Characters exploded for a twelve-run inning in the bottom of the fifth, running away with a 14-3 win. Mike and Nate each had four hits for Shady Characters; Mike went deep twice and Nate hit three homers as the reigning champs picked up where they left off in 2022.

2022 Pitch King Tom started on the mound for Shady Characters. After allowing a leadoff single to Josh, he retired Jack Shack rookie, Jon, for the first out of the inning. Ryan, in his first career wiffle at-bat, hit a one-out single to score Josh from second, and Jack Shack led 1-0. Tom then retired Jared, also a rookie for Jack Shack, to end the inning.

Josh took the mound for Jack Shack, and after allowing a one-out double to Mike, he retired Tom, stranding the runner at second and ending the inning.

Tom rolled through the top of the second, retiring Josh and Jon in order. Josh matched him in the bottom of the second, sending Jason and Lucas down consecutively.

Tom once again retired the side in the top of the third, retiring Ryan and Jared.

2022 Pitch King Tom picked up where he left off last season, pitching a complete game win for Shady Characters

Shady Characters tied the game in the bottom of the third when Nate led off the inning with a solo homer, making the score 3-3. Dylan followed with a single, but Josh stranded him, retiring Mike and Tom to end the inning.

Tom continued to roll in the top of the fourth, retiring Josh and Jon, the fifth and sixth consecutive batters in a row.

Shady Characters took their first lead in the bottom of the fourth. Lucas hit a one-out double, and Nate drove him in with an RBI single, putting Shady Characters ahead 2-1. Josh then retired Dylan to end the inning.

Down a run, Shady Characters exploded for a historic inning in the bottom of the fifth. Mike led off the inning with a solo homer, tying the game at 3-3. Josh then retired Tom for the first out of the inning. The next eleven Shady Characters batters reached base safely, all of them scoring, setting the EWL record for most runs scored with one out in an inning. Jason hit a one-out double, and Lucas followed with a double, putting Shady Characters ahead 4-3. Nate then hit his second homer of the game, and the two-run shot made the score 6-3. Dylan hit a solo homer, and the back-to-back homers gave Shady Characters a 7-3 lead. Mike singled, and he scored from first when Tom hit an RBI single, making the score 8-3. Jason doubled, and Lucas cleared the bases with a three-run blast that put Shady Characters ahead 11-3. Nate hit his second homer of the inning, and the back-to-back jacks made the score 12-3. Dylan tripled, and Mike hit his second homer of the inning, as Shady Characters led 14-3. Josh finally escaped the disastrous inning, retiring Tom for the second out.
