Cheap Goats Slide Past Shady Characters 6-5 in Marathon Nine-Inning Game

Cheap Goats and Shady Characters, who met in the 2021 Wiffle Series, exchange handshakes after Cheap Goats prevailed in the longest game of the 2022 season so far.

It took the longest game of the 2022 regular season for the Cheap Goats to beat Shady Characters without their two most productive hitters in the lineup, but when all was said and done, Cheap Goats had won the game 6-5, handing Shady Characters only their second loss of the season. Joe’s RBI double in the top of the ninth was the deciding factor, as he and Joey had three hits apiece to lead Cheap Goats on offense. Dinger picked up the win on the mound, and Christian closed the game in the bottom of the ninth, earning his first save of the season.

Tom started on the mound for Shady Characters, and after retiring the first batter he faced, Miller, he allowed a one-out solo homer to Joe, which put Cheap Goats in front 1-0. The next batter, Joey, singled, but was caught out trying to extend the hit to a double, ending the inning.

Dinger took the mound for Cheap Goats, and after allowing a leadoff single to Dylan, he retired Tom and Nate to strand him at first, ending the inning.

Tom rolled through the top of the second, retiring Christian and Dinger in order.

Dinger matched him in the bottom of the second, sending Lucas and Dylan down consecutively.

Tom had reached his innings limit for week 8, and Lucas came to the mound in the top of the third. After retiring Miller for the first out, he got into trouble. Joe doubled, and Joey drove him in with an RBI triple, putting Cheap Goats in front 2-0. Christian then doubled, scoring Joey, and the Cheap Goats lead was 3-0. Dinger also doubled, scoring Christian, pushing the score to 4-0. Miller followed with an RBI double, Cheap Goats fifth consecutive extra-base hit, and the lead was 5-0. Lucas retired Joe to strand Miller at second, ending the inning, and Shady Characters trailed by five.

Tom led off the bottom of the third with a solo homer to right-center, putting Shady Characters on the board and cutting the deficit to 5-1. Two batters later, Lucas hit a one-out single, but Dinger stranded him, retiring Dylan for the second out of the inning.

Tom went 3-for-7 with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored, and an RBI in the Shady Characters loss.

Lucas settled in starting in the top of the fourth, retiring Joey and Christian in order.

Shady Characters chipped away at the Cheap Goats lead in the bottom of the fourth. Tom led off with a double off the left-centerfield fence, and two batters later, Lucas hit an RBI double, scoring Tom to cut the Cheap Goats lead to 5-2. Dinger then retired Dylan to strand Lucas at second, ending the inning.

Despite earning the loss on the mound, Lucas led Shady Characters on offense, going 5-for-7 with a single, four doubles, a run scored, and two RBI.

Lucas retired Cheap Goats in order in the top of the fifth, sending Dinger and Miller down consecutively.

Dinger once again matched him in the bottom of the fifth, retiring Tom and Nate in order.

Joey doubled with one out in the top of the sixth, but Lucas stranded him, retiring Christian for the second out of the inning.

Down three runs, Shady Characters rallied in the bottom of the sixth. Lucas led off the inning with a double, and Dylan followed with a two-run homer that cut the score to 5-4. Tom then doubled, and two batters later, Lucas hit a one-out RBI double, scoring Tom to tie the game at 5-5. Shady Characters had the winning run in scoring position, but they couldn’t capitalize. Dinger retired Dylan to strand Lucas at second, sending the game to extra-innings tied at 5-5.

Miller doubled with one out in the top of the seventh, putting the go-ahead run in scoring position, but Lucas stranded him, retiring Joe for the second out of the inning.

Dinger cruised through the bottom of the seventh, retiring Tom and Nate in order.

Lucas rolled through the top of the eighth, retiring Joey before striking out Christian to end the inning.

Lucas led off the bottom of the eighth with a double, putting the winning run in scoring position. Dylan followed with a single but was caught out in between first and second base on a communication error with Lucas. Dinger then retired Tom for the second out of the inning, stranding Lucas at second.

Dinger started the top of the ninth with a single, and he moved to second when Miller grounded out for the first out of the inning. Joe followed with an RBI double, scoring Dinger, and Cheap Goats had taken a 6-5 lead. Lucas retired Joey, stranding Joe at second, and Shady Characters trailed by a run heading into the bottom of the ninth.

Joe led Cheap Goats in the nine-inning victory over Shady Characters, going 3-for-6 with two doubles, a homer, two runs scored, and two RBI, including the game-winning RBI in the top of the ninth.

Dinger had reached his innings limit for the week by pitching eight innings in the game. Cheap Goats brought Christian to the mound from the bullpen, and he allowed a double to the first batter he faced, Nate. Shady Characters had the tying run in scoring position and the winning run at the plate. Christian buckled down, however, striking out Lucas for the first out. He then got Dylan to fly out to center for the second out, stranding the runner at second, and giving Cheap Goats a 6-5 extra-innings victory.

The win moved Cheap Goats to 6-10 in a three-way tie with Jack Shack and the Guac Boys in the standings, and the loss dropped Shady Characters to 14-2.

Austin and Jared Lead Offensive Outpouring for Jack Shack in 13-7 Win Over Guac Boys

Austin set the pace during Jack Shack’s offensive barrage on the Guac Boys, going 6-for-7 with two singles, three doubles, a triple, four runs scored, and three RBI.

Austin went 6-for-7 with two singles, three doubles, and a triple, and Jared went 4-for-6 with a single, two triples, and a homer, as Jack Shack unloaded for thirteen runs, defeating the Guac Boys 13-7. Josh and Adam also had three hits apiece as the Guac Boys dropped their fourth straight.

Adam started for Jack Shack, and after allowing a leadoff single to Alec, he retired the next two batters, Kyle and Mikaela, to strand the runner at first, ending the inning.

Adam retired all but one batter for Jack Shack, allowing seven runs in a complete game win.

Kyle took the mound for the Guac Boys, and he fell behind early. Austin singled to start the bottom of the first, and Josh drove him in with a two-run homer, making the score 2-0. Kyle retired the next two batters, Adam and Jared, to end the inning.

The Guac Boys got on the board in the top of the second. Alec tripled with one out, and Kyle drove him in with an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Mikaela also singled, putting runners on first and third with one out, but Adam stranded both runners, retiring Bohn to end the inning.

With runners on second and third with no outs, Adam flew out to left, but Austin tagged and scored on the play to put Jack Shack in front 3-1. Jared then tripled, scoring Josh, and the lead was 4-1. Austin followed with a single, scoring Jared, and Jack Shack led 5-1. Kyle then retired Josh, stranding Austin at first and ending the inning.

Jack Shack nearly doubled their lead in the bottom of the third. After retiring Adam for the first out ot the inning, Kyle gave up six consecutive hits, starting with Jared, whose solo homer made the score 6-1. Austin doubled, and Josh drove him in with an RBI double, extending the lead to 7-1. Adam then tripled, scoring Josh, and the lead was 8-1. Jared followed with an RBI single that scored Adam, and Jack Shack was in front 9-1. Austin then tripled, his second extra-base hit of the inning, and Jared scored to put Jack Shack ahead 10-1. Kyle finally escaped the inning by retiring Josh, stranding Austin at third, and Jack Shack had opened up a nine-run lead.

The Guac Boys put a small dent in the deficit in the top of the fourth. With one out, Alec hit a solo homer to right-center, narrowing the deficit to 10-2. Adam retired the next batter, Kyle, to end the inning.

Up eight runs, Jack Shack put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth. Adam led off with a solo homer, making the score 11-2. Jared tripled for the second time in the game, and Austin drove him in with an RBI double, putting Jack Shack in front 12-2. Two batters later, Adam hit a one-out RBI single, scoring Austin, and Jack Shack led 13-2. Kyle retired Jared to strand Adam at first, and the Guac Boys trailed by eleven runs.

Adam rolled through the top of the fifth, retiring Mikaela and Bohn in order.

For the first time in the game, Kyle also pitched a perfect frame in the bottom of the fifth, striking out Austin and retiring Josh.

Down eleven heading into the top of the sixth, the Guac Boys showed some heart. Adam retired Alec for the first out, but the next batter, Kyle, hit a solo homer, cutting the score to 13-3. Mikaela tripled, and Bohn drove her in with an RBI single, making the score 13-4. Alec singled, and Kyle emptied the bases with his second bomb of the inning, a three-run shot that cut the Jack Shack lead to 13-7. Jack Shack made a call to the bullpen, bringing Austin to the mound, and his pitching appearance was short and effective. He retired the first batter he faced, Mikaela, ending the inning and the game, giving Jack Shack a 13-7 win.

The win moved Jack Shack to 6-10 on the season, and the loss dropped the Guac Boys to 6-10 on the season, with both teams tied for second in the season standings.

Short-Handed Shady Characters Nudge Past Jack Shack 5-2

Dylan led Shady Characters in the win, going 4-for-6 with two singles and two homers, including his fourth leadoff homer of the 2022 season.

Despite missing the two most potent bats from their lineup, first place Shady Characters squeezed past Jack Shack 5-2 for yet another victory, moving to 14-1 on the season. Dylan set the pace for Shady Characters, going 4-for-6 rom the leadoff spot with two singles, two homers, and three RBI. Tom pitched the complete game win, allowing only two runs on seven hits, and Shady Characters added yet another notch to their W column.

Josh started on the mound for Jack Shack, and he allowed a leadoff homer to Dylan, the first batter he faced in the top of the first. Tom followed with a triple, and remained at third when Nate followed with a double. Lucas then singled, scoring Tom, and Shady Characters led 2-0. Dylan hit a deep sac fly to center, allowing Nate to tag and score on the play, pushing the Shady Characters lead to 3-0. Josh then retired Tom, stranding Lucas at second and ending the inning.

Austin and Josh each singled to start the bottom of the first for Jack Shack, but Tom buckled down and stranded them. He retired Adam and Jared to leave both runners on base, and the score remained 3-0.

With no outs and runners on the corners, Tom doubled, scoring Lucas to extend the Shady Characters lead to 4-1. Josh got the next batter, Nate, to fly out to center, and Dylan was thrown out trying to tag and score on the play, ending the inning.

Cheap Goats Hold Off Late Guac Boys Rally to Win 10-9

After taking a 10-5 lead in the top of the fifth, Cheap Goats allowed the Guac Boys to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth before closing out the victory, stranding the tying runner in scoring position on second base. Miller went 5-for-6 to lead Cheap Goats, Joe had four hits, Joey and Dinger had three hits apiece, and Christian pitched the complete game win as Cheap Goats continued their climb out of last place in the season standings.

Bohn started for the Guac Boys, and Cheap Goats hit him early to take a lead in the top of the first. Miller led off with a double, and two batters later, Joey doubled, scoring Miller to put Cheap Goats in front 1-0. Bohn then retired Christian to strand Joey at second, ending the inning.

The Guac Boys bounced back immediately in the bottom of the first to claim the lead. Alec singled off Christian to lead off the inning, and Kyle followed with a two-run shot to right-center, making the score 2-1. Christian retired Mikaela and Bohn to end the inning.

Cheap Goats evened things up in the top of the second. Miller doubled with one out, and he scored from second when Joe hit an RBI single, tying the game at 1-1. Bohn retired Joey for the second out, stranding Joe at first.

Bohn got Christian to ground out for the first out of the inning, but Joe scored on the play, giving Cheap Goats a 3-2 lead. Dinger then singled, scoring Joey, and the lead was 4-2. Miller then launched a two-run bomb to left, making the score 6-2. Joe followed with a double, but Bohn got Joey to fly out to the mound, stranding the runner at second and ending the inning.

Trailing by four, the Guac Boys responded in the bottom of the fourth. Alec singled, and two batters later, he scored when Mikaela hit an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 6-3. Bohn than hit a two-run homer, and the Guac Boys trailed 6-5. Alec followed with his second single of the inning, but Christian stranded him, retiring Kyle to end the inning.

Bohn’s two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth pulled the Guac Boys within one run.

Cheap Goats continued to hit Bohn hard in the top of the fifth. After retiring Christian, Bohn allowed a one-out single to Dinger. Miller followed with a double, putting runners on second and third. Joe singled, scoring Dinger, and Cheap Goats were in front 7-5. Joey cleared the bases with a three-run homer to left, and the score was 10-5. Bohn retired Christian for the second out of the inning, and Cheap Goats had taken a five-run lead.

Christian got back on track in the bottom of the fifth, sending Mikaela and Bohn down in order.

Bohn retired Dinger for the first out in the top of the sixth. The next batter, Miller, launched a high fly into the tree in right field. Miller was incorrectly called out, and was later credited by the scorekeepers with a double. The incorrect call could have had a dramatic impact on the outcome of the game and the season standings, but fortunately, it did not come into play. The play ended the inning, and Cheap Goats led 10-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Christian remained on the mound to close things out for Cheap Goats. Alec led off the bottom of the sixth with a single, his fourth of the game. Kyle also singled, putting runners on first and third with no outs. Mikaela then singled, scoring Alec, and the lead was cut to 10-6. Christian got the next batter, Bohn, to fly out to right, leaving runners on first and second with one out. Alec doubled, scoring Kyle, and the Guac Boys were behind 10-7. Kyle then doubled, emptying the bases, and the Guac Boys had cut the deficit to 10-9. The Guac Boys had the tying run on second and the go-ahead run at the plate, but the rally would end there. Christian got Mikaela to fly out to right for the second out, stranding Kyle at second, ending the game, and giving Cheap Goats a dramatic 10-9 win.

The win moved Cheap Goats to 5-10 on the season, and the loss dropped the Guac Boys to 6-9.

Jason of Shady Characters Named Pabst Blue Ribbon Wiffler of the Week

Defending champions Shady Characters continued to bulldoze the EWL in week 4, outscoring their opponents 30-8 in two blowout victories. They were led by Jason, who went deep four times and continued to establish himself as the most feared power bat in the league. 

In a 15-3 win over Jack Shack, he went 3-for-6 with a double, two homers, three runs scored, and four RBI.

In a 15-5 win defeat of Cheap Goats, he went 4-for-6 with a single, a double, two home runs, three runs scored, and two RBI.

In total, Jason went 7-for-12 with a single, two doubles, four home runs, six runs scored, and six RBI as Shady Characters remained undefeated at 8-0 on the season.

This is the third time Jason has been named Wiffler of the Week. He earned the honors for week 9 of the 2021 regular season and week 2 of the 2021 playoffs.Â
