
Shady Characters celebrate at the plate after one of Thomas’s record-breaking six homers in a 21-12 rout of Cheap Goats
In only his second career game, Shady Characters’ rookie Thomas broke the single-game regular season record for home runs, launching his sixth home run in his eighth and final at-bat, surpassing the long-standing record of five home runs held by Ivan, Joey, Bob, Blose, Jason, and Miller. Tom also had an enormous game, going 8-for-9 with what would have been a record-tying five home runs, including a grand slam, as Shady Characters unloaded a historic offensive explosion, routing Cheap Goats 21-12.
Tom took the mound for Shady Characters, and the first batter he faced, Joey, hit a leadoff homer, putting Cheap Goats ahead 1-0. Courtlen followed with a single, and Christian drove him in with a two-run homer to right, giving Cheap Goats a 3-0 lead. Tom then retired Dinger and Daniel to end the inning, and Shady Characters trailed by three runs.
Dinger started for Cheap Goats, and the first batter he faced, Tom, also hit leadoff homer, cutting the Cheap Goats lead to 3-1. Two batters later, Lucas hit a one-out single, and Thomas followed with a two-run homer to right-center, tying the game at 3-3. Dinger retired Tom for the second out of the inning, and the game was tied at 3-3.
Cheap Goats continued to hit Tom hard in the top of the second. Joey led off with a double, and he moved to third when Courtlen followed with a single. Christian cleared the bases with his second bomb of the game, a three-run shot that put Cheap Goats ahead 6-3. Two batters later, Daniel doubled, and he scored from second when Joey followed with an RBI double that made the score 7-3. Courtlen then launched a two-run homer to right, and the Cheap Goats lead was 9-3. Christian doubled, but Tom escaped further damage, retiring Dinger for the second out of the inning.

Cheap Goats had put nine runs on the board through two, but the wheels fell off in the bottom of the second. Shady Characters delivered a historic inning, tying the EWL record for most runs scored in an inning. Nate led off the inning with a single, and he moved to second when Lucas singled. Thomas then singled, loading the bases for Tom. Tom cleared the bases with a grand slam, becoming only the sixth player in EWL history to hit one in the regular season, and the blast cut the score to 9-7. Nate doubled, and he moved to third when Lucas followed with a single. With no outs and runners on the corners, Thomas hit a three-run homer, putting Shady Characters ahead 10-9. Cheap Goats pulled Dinger from the mound, replacing him with Christian. The first batter he faced, Tom, followed with a solo shot, his second homer of the inning, and the back-to-back bombs put Shady Characters in front 11-9. Christian retired Nate for the first out of the inning after Shady Characters had reached base safely in eight consecutive at-bats, scoring eight runs. Christian then allowed a solo homer to Lucas, extending the Shady Characters lead to 12-9. Thomas followed with his second homer of the inning, and the second pair of back-to-back homers in the second inning put Shady Characters ahead 13-9. Tom doubled, and Nate followed with a two-run homer, pushing the Shady Characters lead to 15-9. Lucas then homered, and the third pair of back-to-back jacks gave Shady Characters a 16-9 lead. Cheap Goats made their second pitching change of the inning, bringing Courtlen in for his first career pitching appearance. The first batter he faced, Thomas, hit his third homer of the inning and fourth of the game, a solo shot that pushed the score to 17-9. Tom followed with his third home run of the second inning, and Shady Characters fourth homer in as many at-bats, which made the score 18-9. Courtlen finally recorded the second out of the inning, retiring Nate to end a disastrous inning for Cheap Goats. In total Shady Characters had scored 15 runs, tying the single-inning record, hit nine home runs, including three home run streaks topping out at four consecutive homers, and a grand slam.

Tom had reached his innings limit for week 1, and Shady Characters brought Lucas to the mound in the top of the third. He allowed a leadoff single to Daniel, and two batters later, Courtlen hit a one-out single, putting runners on the corners. Lucas escaped the jam, retiring Christian to strand both runners, ending the inning.
Courtlen retired Lucas to start the bottom of the third, but Thomas followed with a solo homer, his fifth, tying the single-game record, and putting Shady Characters in front 19-9. Tom singled, and Nate followed with a single, putting runners on the corners. Courtlen avoided another massive inning, retiring Lucas to strand both runners, ending the inning.
Dinger singled to start the top of the fourth, and two batters later, Joey drove him in with an RBI double, making the score 19-10. Lucas then retired Courlen for the second out of the inning.
Tom singled with one-out in the bottom of the fourth, but for the first time in the game, Shady Characters had a scoreless inning, as Courtlen retired Nate to strand the runner, and the score remained 19-10.
Christian led off the top of the fifth with a solo homer, cutting the Cheap Goats deficit to 19-11. Two batters later, Daniel hit his first career homer, a solo shot that made the score 19-12. Lucas then retired Joey to end the inning.
Courtlen retired Lucas to start the bottom of the fifth, and Thomas came to the plate in what would likely be his final at-bat of the game with a chance to break the single-game home run record. He did exactly that, launching a homer to deep left-center, his sixth of the game. In only his second career game, he had broken a record that had stood for twelve years, and stands alone among home run hitters in EWL history. Tom followed with a solo homer, and the fourth pair of back-to-back homers for Shady Characters in the game gave them a 21-12 lead. Nate singled, but Courtlen stranded him, retiring Lucas to end the inning with Cheap Goats trailing by nine runs.
Courtlen doubled to start the top of the sixth, but Cheap Goats wouldn’t threaten further. Lucas retired Christian and Dinger to strand the runner at second, ending the inning and the game, giving Shady Characters a 21-12 win.
The win moved Shady Characters to 2-0 on the season, and the loss dropped Cheap Goats to 1-1.
