Lucas of Shady Characters Named Pabst Blue Ribbon Wiffler of the Week

Despite offseason rumors that Lucas had played his last game on the Wiffle Diamond, he returned for the 2022 season and started with as good of a week as he’s had in his entire wiffle career. As a result, he was voted by the league as the Pabst Blue Ribbon Wiffler of the Week for week 1 of the 2022 EWL season.

In a 3-2 win over Cheap Goats in the season opener, Lucas went 1-for-2 with a single and a run scored.

In a 4-2 win over Jack Shack, he went 4-for-4 with a double, three singles, and an RBI. He also pitched four innings of relief, earning a save while allowing two runs on four hits.

In total, Lucas went 5-for-6 in week 1 and helped lead Shady Characters to an undefeated start to the season.

This is the second time Lucas has been voted PBR Wiffler of the Week, with the other coming in week 7 of the 2021 season.

Kyle and Jude lead Guacamol-yay to Shut-out Win Over Cheap Goats

Kyle went 3-for-4 with a single, a double, a triple, and a run scored to help lead Guacamol-yay to their first win of the 2022 EWL season

Brum was dominant on the mound, pitching a two-hit shutout, and Kyle and Jude each contributed three hits, as Guacamol-yay picked up their first win of the season with a 4-0 victory over Cheap Goats. Jude had three extra-base hits, Kyle had two, and Brum had two hits as Guac kept Cheap Goats winless after the first week of the 2022 season.

Christian started on the mound for Cheap Goats, and after allowing a one-out triple to Kyle, he stranded him, retiring Austin to end the inning.

Brum also escaped damage in the bottom of the first. He allowed a one-out double to Miller, but stranded him, retiring Christian to end the inning.

Guacamol-yay would give Brum all the run support he would need in the top of the second. Brum singled to start the inning, and two batters later, Jude hit an RBI triple to put Guac ahead 1-0. Christian then retired Bohn to end the inning.

Brum got into a groove starting in the bottom of the second, retiring Cheap Goats in order.

Alec singled to start the top of the third, and Kyle followed with a single, putting runners on first and third with no outs. Christian escaped the inning, however, retiring Austin and Brum to strand both runners, and the score remained 1-0.

Brum sent Joey and Miller down consecutively in the bottom of the third.

Guacamol-yay extended their lead in the top of the fourth. Jan led off with a single, and he moved from first to third when Jude followed with a double. Christian got Bohn to ground out for the first out of the inning, but Jan scored on the play, putting Guacamol-yay in front 2-0. Christian then retired Alec to strand Jude at third, ending the inning.

Brum retired Christian and Jordan in the bottom of the fourth, the fifth and sixth consecutive batters he retired in order.

Kyle led off the top of the fifth with a double, and he scored from second when Austin grounded out to center for the first out of the inning. Brum singled, but Christian retired Jan to strand him at first, and Guacamol-yay led 3-0.

Dinger singled to lead off the bottom of the fifth, but it was the last hit Cheap Goats would get in the game. Brum retired Joey and Miller to strand Dinger at first, ending the inning.

Jude tripled to lead off the top of the sixth, and he scored when Bohn followed with an RBI single. Christian retired Alec and Kyle to end the inning, and Guacamol-yay had grown their lead to 4-0.

Brum made quick work of Cheap Goats in the bottom of the sixth, retiring Christian and Jordan in order to end the game, giving Guacamol-yay a 4-0 win.

The win moved Guacamol-yay to 1-1 on the season, and the loss dropped Cheap Goats to the bottom of the EWL standings at 0-2.

Four Players Log Multiple Hits as Shady Characters Roll Past Jack Shack 4-2

Mike went 2-for-4 with a double and a solo homer for Shady Characters

Lucas went 4-for-4 for Shady Characters, Dylan scored three runs, and Mike and Tom each contributed two hits, as defending champions Shady Characters moved to 2-0 on the season with a 4-2 win over Jack Shack. Tom earned the win, and Lucas picked up a save in long relief as the Wiffle Series champions continued their roll from 2021, remaining undefeated.

Tom started on the mound for Shady Characters and escaped a jam early. He allowed consecutive singles to Adam and Josh to start the inning, putting two on with no outs. He got out of the inning unscathed, however, when he got Jared to fly out to center. Adam was called out trying to tag up on the play, and the inning was over.

Shady Characters took an early lead in the bottom of the first. Dylan led off with a single, and two batters later, Tom hit a one-out RBI double, making the score 1-0. Lucas followed with a single to put runners on the corners, but Jack Shack’s starter, Sean, retired Nate to strand both runners, ending the inning.

Tom rolled through the top of the second, retiring the Jack Shack side in order, and he had met his innings limit for week one.

Shady Characters extended their lead in the bottom of the second. Dylan led off with a single and moved to third when Mike doubled.  Two batters later, Lucas hit a one-out RBI single to score Dylan, and Shady Characters led 2-0.  Shady Characters had runners on the corners with one out, but Sean once again stranded two runners, striking out Nate to end the inning.

Lucas retired Adam and Josh in order in the top of the fourth, and Rob matched him in the bottom half of the inning, sending Nate and Dylan down consecutively.

Rob led off the top of the fifth with a single, but Jack Shack couldn’t capitalize. Lucas retired Sean and Adam to strand him at first, ending the inning.

Shady Characters added an additional insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when Mike led off the inning with a solo homer. Lucas hit a one-out double two batters later, but Rob stranded him, retiring Nate to end the inning.

Down 4-1, Jack Shack came out swinging in the top of the sixth. Josh led off the inning with a solo shot to right-center, cutting the score to 4-2. The rally would end there, however, as Lucas retired Rob and Sean to end the inning, giving Shady Characters a 4-2 win.

The win moved Shady Characters to 2-0 on the season, and Jack Shack dropped to 1-1.

Jack Shack Rally in Bottom of the Fifth to Steal 4-3 Victory Over Guacamol-yay

Adam went 2-for-4 for Jack Shack with a double and a triple, and he drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fifth.

It was a combined effort between proven veterans and a handful of rookies, as Jack Shack scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to come-from-behind, beating Guacamol-yay 4-3. Veterans Josh and Adam, as well as rookies Jared and Rob, each had hits in the fifth, and Jack Shack started a new era for the franchise with a win in the season opener.

EWL rookie Sean took the mound for Jack Shack, making his first career appearance. He retired the first batter he faced, Alec, before allowing back-to-back singles to Kyle and Austin. Guacamol-yay had two runners on with one out, but Sean escaped the first jam of his wiffle career. He retired Brum to strand both runners, ending the inning.

Jude started for Guacamol-yay, and he allowed a leadoff double to Adam. Josh followed with a double, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Jared, in his first career at-bat, hit a sac fly to center, scoring Adam, and Jack Shack led 1-0. Jude then retired Rob to strand Josh at third, ending the inning.

Bohn cleared the bases with an RBI single, driving in two runs and putting Guacamol-yay ahead 3-1. Sean then retired Alec to strand Bohn at first, ending the inning, and Jack Shack trailed by two.

Jude continued to pitch effectively in the bottom of the fourth, retiring Sean and Adam in order.

Sean got back on track in the top of the fifth, sending Kyle and Austin down, and the score remained 3-1.

Sean pitched a complete game win in his EWL debut for Jack Shack, allowing three runs on seven hits.

Down two, Jack Shack mounted a rally in the bottom of the fifth. Josh led off the inning with a double, and Jared followed with an RBI single, scoring Josh to cut the score to 3-2. Rob then tripled, driving in Jared and the game was tied at 3-3. Jude struck out Sean, but Jack Shack had the go-ahead run on third with one out. Adam capitalized, hitting an RBI triple to score Rob, and Jack Shack led 4-3. Jude finally escaped the inning by retiring Josh, and Guacamol-yay were down a run heading into their final at-bat.

Sean made quick work of Guacamol-yay in the top of the sixth. He struck out Brum, and then he retired Jan to end the inning and the game, closing out a 4-3 comeback win for Jack Shack.

The win moved Jack Shack to 1-0 on the season, and Guacamol-yay dropped to 0-1 with the loss.

Shady Characters Rally in Bottom of Fifth to Beat Cheap Goats 3-2

Miller pitches to 2021 Wiffler of the Year Mike, who went 2-for-3 with two singles, a run scored, and an RBI in the season opener.

The 2022 EWL season opener was a rematch of last year’s Wiffle Series, when Shady Characters beat Cheap Goats to earn the first Wiffle Series title in their franchise history. Despite trailing throughout the entire game, Shady Characters picked up where they left off last season, rallying from two runs down to score three in the bottom of the fifth, beating Cheap Goats 3-2.

Shady Characters’ ace Tom took the mound in the opener, and after allowing a one-out triple to Miller in the top of the first, he retired Jordan to strand the runner, ending the inning.

Miller started the game and the season for Cheap Goats, and he retired Shady Characters in order in the bottom of the first.

Cheap Goats took an early lead in the top of the second. Christian doubled, and two batters later, Joey hit a one-out two-run homer, putting Cheap Goats ahead 2-0. Tom then retired Miller to end the inning.

Miller continued to roll in the bottom of the second, retiring Tom and Jason in order.

Christian hit a one-out single in the top of the third, but Tom stranded him, retiring Dinger to end the inning, and the score remained 2-0.

Mike then hit an RBI single, scoring Nate, and the game was tied at 2-2. Tom then hit an RBI double off the right-center field wall, scoring Mike and Shady Characters had taken a 3-2 lead. Miller finally escaped the inning, getting Jason to fly out to the mound.

After trailing for four and a half innings, Shady Characters needed two outs to win the game. Tom retired Joey to start the top of the sixth, but Miller followed with a one-out double. The tying run was in scoring position, but Tom buckled down, retiring Jordan to strand the runner, ending the inning and game as Shady Characters took the season opener 3-2.

The win moved Shady Characters to 1-0 on the season, and the loss dropped Cheap Goats to 0-1.
