Josh Hits Grand Slam in 12-11 Extra-Inning Suspended Game Win for Guacamol-yay

Despite losing their first eight games of the 2021 season, Guacamol-yay are now on a winning streak after winning both of their week 5 games. After getting their first win of the season, they went to extra-innings with Cheap Goats, tied at 11-11, before the game was suspended due to darkness. A week later, Guacamol-yay took a lead in the top of the seventh and held on to win 12-11, picking up their second straight victory. Jan pitched the complete game win, Jude contributed five hits, and Josh K became only the fourth player in EWL history to hit a regular season grand slam.

Brett made his first appearance on the mound in 2021, starting the game for Cheap Goats. He retired the first two batters he faced, Jan and Josh K, in the top of the first.

Jan took the mound for Guacamol-yay. He retired Brett and stuck out Joey in the bottom of the first.

Brett rolled through the top of the second, sending Ryan and Jude down in order.

Cheap Goats got on the board in the bottom of the second. Dinger doubled with one out, and Brett drove him in with an RBI double, making the score 1-0. Joey followed with a double, moving Brett to third, putting two runners in scoring position with one out. Jordan then doubled, scoring Brett, and Cheap Goats led 2-0. Cheap Goats once again had two runners in scoring position, but Jan avoided further damage, retiring Dinger to strand both runners, ending the inning.

Kyle led off the top of the third with a double, and Jan drove him in with an RBI triple, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Guacamol-yay had the tying run on third, but Brett escaped, retiring Josh K and Ryan to strand Jan at third.

Brett doubled to start the bottom of the third, and Joey drove him in with an RBI single, extending the Cheap Goats lead to 3-1. Jan then retired Jordan and Dinger to strand Joey at first, ending the inning.

Down two runs, Guacamol-yay stormed back to take a lead in the top of the fourth. Jude singled, and Kyle drove him in with an RBI triple, making the score 3-2. Jan then doubled, scoring Kyle, and the game was tied at 3-3. Two batters later, Ryan hit a double to put runners on second and third with one out. Jude cleared the bases with an RBI triple, putting Guacamol-yay in front 5-3. Brett then retired Kyle to strand Jude at third and end the inning.

Brett got a run back in the bottom of the fourth when he led off the inning with a solo homer. Joey then doubled, but Cheap Goats couldn’t tie the game up. Jan retired Jordan and Christian to strand Joey at second, and the score was 5-4.

Brett retired the side in order in the top of the fifth, sending Jan and Josh K down consecutively.

Down a run, Cheap Goats reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth. For the second consecutive inning, Brett led off with a solo shot, tying the game at 5-5. Joey then doubled and scored from second when Jordan grounded out to center for the first out of the inning. Dinger singled, and Brett hit his second blast of the inning, a two-run shot that put Cheap Goats ahead 8-5. The next batter, Joey, singled, but was caught out trying to extend the hit into a double, ending the inning.

Down three in the top of the sixth, Guacamol-yay once again reloaded and had a huge inning, taking the lead back. Ryan singled to lead off the inning, and Jude followed with a single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Kyle then singled, scoring Ryan from third, cutting the Cheap Goats lead to 8-6. Jan then singled, loading the bases for Josh K. Cheap Goats made a call to the bullpen, bringing Dinger to the mound. The first batter he faced, Josh K, hit a towering bomb to left field, emptying the bases for a grand slam, becoming only the fourth player in the eleven year history of the league to hit a grand slam, only the second grand slam of the past five seasons. After retiring Ryan, Dinger allowed a triple to Jude, and Kyle followed with an RBI double to score him, making the score 11-8. Dinger finally escaped the inning by retiring Jan, stranding Kyle at second.

After allowing six runs to fall behind by three runs, Cheap Goats continued the back-and-forth action with a rally in the bottom of the sixth. Jordan led off the inning with a single, and Dinger followed with a single, putting two on with no outs and the tying run at the plate. Brett came to the plate having hit a home run in his past three at-bats, but Jan got him to fly out to the mound for the first out of the inning. Joey came to the plate and hit a three-run homer to left-center, tying the game at 11-11. Jan retired the next batter, Jordan, ending the inning, sending the game to extra innings.

Tied at 11-11 through six, sun had set on the Wiffle Diamond, and the game was postponed until the following week.

A week later, both teams had some lineup changes. Alec was subbed in for Ryan in Guacamol-yay’s lineup, and Christian was substituted for Dinger in Cheap Goats lineup, and he also took the mound.

The first batter Christian faced in the top of the seventh, Josh K, tripled, putting the go-ahead run on third with no outs. Christian got Alec to ground out for the first out of the inning, but Josh K scored on the play, putting Guacamol-yay in front 12-11. Christian allowed a one-out single to Jude, but stranded him, retiring Kyle to end the inning.

Jan remained on the mound to close things out for Guacamol-yay. He retired Christian for the first out of the inning before allowing a double to Brett. Cheap Goats had the tying run in scoring position, but they couldn’t capitalize. Jan retired Joey to strand Brett, ending the inning and the game, giving Guacamol-yay a 12-11 victory.

The win moved Guacamol-yay to 2-8 on the season, and the loss dropped Cheap Goats to 6-4.

Jack Shack Snaps Shady Characters Six Game Win Streak with 6-3 Win

Four of Jack Shack’s players tallied three or more hits for a total of fourteen as Jack Shack beat Shady Characters 6-3, snapping their six game win streak. Dustin pitched the complete game win and went 3-for-5, and Turbo went 4-for-5, as Jack Shack kept the pressure on offensively while also playing at a high level in the field.

After retiring the first batter he faced, Dylan, Dustin gave up a one-out triple to Mike. Shady Characters couldn’t capitalize, however, as Dustin retired Tom to strand Mike at third, ending the inning.

Tom took the mound for Shady Characters with one inning of eligibility left for the week. He allowed a leadoff double to Adam, and Turbo followed with a single, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Jack Shack was threatening, but Tom escaped the jam. He retired Dustin and Brian, stranding both Jack Shack runners, and ending the inning.

Lucas tripled with one out in the top of the second, but Dustin once again stranded a Shady Characters runner at third, retiring Dylan to end the inning.

Lucas took the mound for Shady Characters, and Jack Shack got on the board in the bottom of the second. Adam doubled with one out, and Turbo drove him in with an RBI single that made the score 1-0. Dustin then singled, putting runners on first and second. Brian cleared the bases with an RBI triple, extending the Jack Shack lead to 3-0. Josh D then singled, scoring Brian from third, and the score was 4-0. Adam singled, putting runners on the corners, but Lucas finally got out of the inning, retiring Turbo to strand both runners.

Down four, Shady Characters chipped into the Jack Shack lead in the top of the third. Mike led off with a triple, and when Tom grounded out to center for the first out, Mike scored from third. Dustin then fanned Nate to end the inning, and the score was 4-1.

Jack Shack made up the run in the bottom of the third. Dustin doubled to start the inning, and Brian followed with an RBI double, putting Jack Shack ahead 5-1. Lucas then retired Josh D and struck out Adam, stranding Brian at second and ending the inning.

Dustin allowed a one-out double to Dylan in the top of the fourth, but he stranded another Shady Characters runner, retiring Mike to end the inning.

Jack Shack added another run to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Turbo led off with a double, and Dustin drove him in with an RBI double, extending the Jack Shack lead to 6-1. Brian followed with a single, but Dustin was caught out trying to score from second on the play for the first out in the inning. Lucas then retired Josh D, stranding Brian at first and ending the inning.

Two batters later, Mike hit a one-out single, and Tom followed with an RBI single, scoring Mike from first to make the score 6-3. The rally would end there, however, as Dustin retired Nate to end the inning and the game, giving Jack Shack a 6-3 win.

The win moved Jack Shack to 4-6 on the season, and the loss dropped Shady Characters to 8-2.

Guacamol-yay Get First Win of 2021 in Epic Ten-Inning Victory Over Jack Shack

In one of the most unusual games in the eleven year history of the EWL, Guacamol-yay and Jack Shack were scoreless through nine innings before Guacamol-yay took a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10th and held on to win 2-1. Over the first nine innings, Guacamol-yay stranded four runners and Jack Shack stranded eight, with both teams unable to score. Guacamol-yay didn’t register their first hit until the fifth inning, but they played solid defense until Josh K hit a two-run homer in the 10th, allowing them to pull away for their first win of the season.

Brian took the mound for Jack Shack, and he had one of the best outings of his wiffle career. He retired Jan and Josh in order in the top of the first.

Josh K started for Guacamol-yay, and he was also very effective both pitching and fielding the ball to generate outs. He matched Brian in the bottom of the first, sending Adam and Turbo down consecutively.

Brian rolled through the top of the second, retiring Kyle and Jude.

Dustin led off the bottom of the second with a double, and he moved to third when Brian followed with a single. Jack Shack had runners on the corners with no outs, but Josh K buckled down and escaped the jam. He retired Josh D and Doc, stranding both runners to end the inning.

Brian continued to pitch effectively in the top of the third, retiring Ryan before striking out Jan.

Josh K cruised through the bottom of the third, retiring Adam and Turbo, and the game was scoreless through three innings.

Brian struck out his second consecutive batter when he fanned Josh K to start the fourth. He then retired Kyle to end the inning, and he was perfect through four.

Dustin doubled for the second consecutive at-bat to lead off the bottom of the fourth, and for the second consecutive inning, Brian also singled, once again putting runners on the corners with no outs. Unfortunately for Jack Shack, for the second consecutive inning Josh K escaped trouble, retiring Josh D and Doc to once again strand two runners, and the game was scoreless through four innings.

Brian’s no-hit bit was broken up in the top of the fifth when Jude became Guacamol-yay’s first baserunner of the game, leading off the inning with a double. Guacamol-yay had a runner in scoring position, but they couldn’t capitalize. Brian retired Ryan and Jan to end the inning, stranding Jude at second.

Josh K rolled through the bottom of the fifth, retiring Adam before striking out Turbo, ending the inning.

Brian returned to prime form in the top of the sixth, retiring Josh K and Kyle, and he had effectively pitched a shutout, allowing zero runs through six innings.

Unfortunately for Brian, he continued to get zero run support from his offense. Josh K retired Dustin and Brian in order, also effectively pitching a shutout, and for the first time in league history, a game went to extra innings tied at 0-0.

Brian retired Jude to start the top of the seventh. Ryan then doubled, but he was thrown out trying to extend the hit into a triple, ending the inning.

Doc singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh, putting the winning run on base, but Josh K continued to strand Jack Shack runners. He retired Adam to strand Doc at first, ending the inning and sending the game to the eighth inning.

Jan doubled to lead off the top of the eighth, and Guacamol-yay had the go-ahead run in scoring position. The next batter, Josh K, grounded out to the mound, and Jan was doubled up on the play, caught in between bases, ending the inning.

Turbo singled to start the bottom of the eighth, and Dustin followed with a single, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Jack Shack were threatening to win the game with two men on, but yet again, Josh got out of the jam. He retired Brian and Josh D, stranding both Jack Shack runners, ending the inning.

Brian had pitched eight shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out two, turning in one of the best pitching performances in EWL history. However, he had reached his innings limit, and Dustin replaced him on the mound in the ninth. Kyle doubled to start the inning, and Guacamol-yay once again had the go-ahead run in scoring position. Jude grounded out to right-center for the first out of the inning, and when Kyle tried to score on the play, he was gunned down by Josh D, ending the inning.

Josh K had also delivered one of the most dominant pitching performances in league history, pitching eight shutout innings, allowing seven hits and striking out one. He had also reached his innings limit, and Kyle came to the mound. He allowed a one-out double to Adam, but retired Turbo to strand him at second, sending the game to the tenth inning.

After eighteen combined scoreless innings between the teams, Guacamol-yay finally broke through in the top of the tenth. Ryan doubled to lead off the inning, once again putting the go-ahead run in scoring position. Two batters later, Josh K put Guacamol-yay on the board with a two-run homer, making the score 2-0. Dustin then fanned Kyle to end the inning, but after nine and a half innings, Guacamol-yay was in front and two outs away from their first win of the 2021 season.

Jack Shack responded in the bottom of the tenth, and it looked as if it may be disaster for Guacamol-yay. The first batter of the inning, Dustin, hit a shot into the left-center field gap. After a series of fielding and throwing errors, Dustin raced around the bases for an inside-the-park homer, making the score 2-1. Kyle wasn’t phased, however, and he regrouped, retiring Brian and Josh D to end the inning, giving Guacamol-yay the 2-1 victory and ending Guacamol-yay’s eight game losing streak.

The win moved Guacamol-yay to 1-8 on the season, and the loss dropped Jack Shack to 3-6 for the year.

Mike Goes 5-for-5 as Shady Characters Pull Away from Cheap Goats 5-2 in Extra Innings

Just days after being name Wiffler of the Week, Mike went 5-for-5 and had the first hit of Shady Characters’ rally in the top of the seventh, as they beat Cheap Goats 5-2. With the game tied 2-2 after six innings, Shady Characters scored three in the top of the seventh, winning their sixth straight contest and extending their lead atop the EWL standings.

Dinger took the mound for Cheap Goats, and he got out of trouble early. Dylan led off the inning with a double, and he moved to third when Mike followed with a double. Shady Characters had two runners in scoring position with no outs, but Dinger pitched his way out of the jam. He got Tom to fly out to the mound before Nate grounded out to center, stranding both runners.

Shady Characters’ ace, Tom, started the game, and the first batter he faced, Brett, launched a solo blast to right-center, putting Cheap Goats in front 1-0. Tom retired the next batters he faced, Joey and Jordan, ending the inning.

Shady Characters drew even in the top of the second. Dylan doubled with one out, and Mike drove him with an RBI double, tying the game at 1-1. Dinger then retired Tom to end the inning.

Tom rolled through the bottom of the second, retiring Dinger and Brett in order.

Nate doubled to lead off the top of the third, but Dinger once again avoided damage. He retired Lucas and Dylan to strand Nate at second, and the score remained tied at 1-1.

Tom cruised once again in the bottom of the third, sending Joey and Jordan down consecutively.

Shady Characters pulled ahead in the top of the fourth. Mike led off the inning with a triple, and he scored when Tom grounded out to center for the first out of the inning. Nate followed with a double, but Dinger stranded him, striking out Lucas for the second out.

Down 2-1, Cheap Goats evened things up in the bottom of the fourth. Dinger started the inning with a single, and he scored from first when Brett followed with an RBI triple, tying the score at 2-2. Tom then got both Joey and Jordan to fly out to the mound, ending the inning.

Dinger struck out his second consecutive batter to start the top of the fifth when he fanned Dylan. Mike followed with a one-out double, but Shady Characters couldn’t capitalize, as Tom flew out to center to end the inning.

Tom retired Dinger to start the bottom of the fifth, and when the next batter, Brett, hit a double, he was caught out trying to extend the hit into a triple, ending the inning.

Cheap Goats went quickly in the bottom of the sixth. Tom retired Joey and Jordan in order for the fourth time in the game, sending the game to extra innings with the score tied at 2-2.

After stranding seven base runners in the first six innings of the game, Shady Characters figured things out in the top of the seventh. Mike led off with a single, and he moved to second when Tom followed with a single. Nate then doubled, scoring Mike, and Shady Characters led 3-2. Lucas followed with an RBI single, scoring Tom, and the score was 4-2. Dinger got Dylan to ground out to center for the first out of the inning. Nate scored on the play, making the score 5-2, but Lucas was also caught in between bases on the play, ending the inning.

Tom remained in the game to close things out for Shady Characters in the bottom of the seventh. He retired the first batter he faced, Dinger, before allowing a one-out triple to Brett. Cheap Goats couldn’t plate a run, however, as Tom struck out Joey to strand the runner at third and end the game, giving Shady Characters a 5-2 win.

The win moved Shady Characters to 8-1 on the season, and the loss dropped Cheap Goats to 6-3.

Dustin of Jack Shack Named Pabst Blue Ribbon Wiffler of the Week

Although his team has sputtered in the standings, Dustin has had the best start to a season in his EWL career, and he was voted Pabst Blue Ribbon Wiffler of the Week for week 4 of the 2021 season.

During the offseason, Dustin handed over Captain status to his Jack Shack teammate Brian, and became a father, but if anything, his bat has improved, and it was on display in week 4.

In a win over Cheap Goats, Dustin went 3-for-5 with two doubles, a home run, three runs scored, three RBI, and he led Jack Shack on defense with six putouts.

In a narrow loss to Shady Characters, he went 4-for-4 with a single, a triple, two homers, two runs scored, and four RBI. He was also intentionally walked in his final at-bat.

In total, Dustin went 7-for-9 with six extra-base hits and seven RBI over two games in week 4.

This is the fifth time in Dustin’s career that he has been voted Wiffler of the Week.
