Tom W of Shady Characters Voted PBR Wiffler of the Week for Week 1

After going 5-for-8 two doubles, three homers, and seven RBI, Tom W was named the Pabst Blue Ribbon Wiffler of the Week for week 1 of the 2019 EWL season.

Tom led Shady Characters to a 1-1 split in week 1, and he was the only player to hit more than one homer in the opening week of the season.

Tom W was Co-Rookie of the Year during the 2018 EWL season, and this is his first time being named Wiffler of the Week.

Joey went 4-for-5 with four doubles, Dinger contributed four singles, and on the mound, he combined with Emily to allow only two runs on four hits, as Cheap Goats beat Shady Characters 6-2. Cheap Goats scored four runs in the final two innings to take a lead that Shady Characters couldn’t surpass, and the Goats finished week 1 as the only undefeated team in the EWL.

Dylan took the mound for Shady Characters, and he got off to a good start, retiring Jordan and Joey in order in the top of the first. He doubled with one out in the bottom of the first, but Dinger, Cheap Goats’ starter, retired Tom W to strand him at second, and the game was scoreless through an inning.

Dinger led off the top of the second with a single. The next batter, Emily, hit a line drive to Dylan, which he caught, retiring both Emily and Dinger for a double play. Dinger retired Shady Characters in order in the bottom of the second, and he had reached his innings limit for week 1.

Cheap Goats got on the board in the top of the third. Dave led off with a double, and he moved from second to third when Jordan singled. With runners on the corners, Joey doubled, scoring Dave to put Cheap Goats ahead 1-0. Dinger then singled, once again putting runners on the corners with no outs. Emily grounded out to right-center, but Joey scored on the play, and Cheap Goats led 2-0. Dave returned to the plate with Dinger on second, but Dylan escaped further damage, getting him to fly out to left to end the inning.

Emily took the mound in the bottom of the third, making her first career EWL pitching appearance. She retired the side in order, and the score remained 2-0.

Joey doubled with one out in the top of the fourth, and he moved from second to third when Dinger followed with a single. Emily came to the plate with runners on the corners and one out, but Dylan struck her out, stranding both runners and ending the inning.

Tom W led off the bottom of the fourth with a double, but Shady Characters couldn’t plate a run, as Emily retired Tom K and Mike to strand the runner at second, maintaining the two-run lead.

Cheap Goats added to their lead in the top of the fifth when Jordan hit a powerful one-out solo homer to left, making the score 3-0. Joey followed with a double, but Dylan stranded him, retiring Dinger to end the inning.

Down three runs, Shady Characters finally showed signs of life in the bottom of the fifth. Joe led off with a double, and two batters later, Tom W crushed a two-run blast to right-center, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Emily retired Tom K to end the inning, and Cheap Goats led by a run heading into the final frame.

Cheap Goats provided Emily with some insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Emily singled and moved to second when Dave followed with a single. Two batters later, Joey hit a bases-clearing double, and the two RBIs put Cheap Goats ahead 5-2. Dinger followed with his fourth single of the game, scoring Joey from second to make the score 6-2. Dylan retired Emily to end the inning, and Shady Characters now trailed by four runs.

Emily picked up a save in her first career EWL pitching performance. She kept Shady Characters in check, allowing only two runs on three hits in four innings of relief.

Emily made quick work of Shady Characters in the bottom of the sixth, sending Mike and Joe down in order, giving Cheap Goats a 6-2 win.

The victory moved Cheap Goats record to 2-0 on the year, and the loss dropped Shady Characters to 1-1.

Jack Shack Outlasts Guacamol-yay 3-2 in Pitcher’s Duel

Adam R pitched the complete game win for Jack Shack, and he also hit his first home run of the 2019 season in the first inning

Adam R of Jack Shack pitched a complete game win, allowing only two runs despite surrendering ten hits, as Guacamol-yay left runners on base and couldn’t capitalize with runners in scoring position in a 3-2 loss. Josh D and Bryan each contributed two hits for Jack Shack in their first win of the season, and Guacamol-yay finished week one winless.

After pitching in relief in their first game of the season, Josh K started on the mound for Guacamol-yay. He retired Josh D to start the game, but the next batter, Adam R, crushed a solo homer to right-center, putting Jack Shack up 1-0.

Guacamol-yay bounced back in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Adam doubled to lead off, and Cory drove him in with an RBI single, making the score 1-1. Two batters later, Jude singled to put runners on first and second with one out, but Adam R escaped the first of many jams, retiring Ben to strand both runners and end the inning.

Josh D tripled with one out in the top of the second, but the score remained tied, as Josh K retired Adam R to strand Josh D at third, ending the inning.

Adam singled to start the bottom of the second for Guacamol-yay, and Cory followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. Guacamol-yay couldn’t plate a runner, however, as Adam R got Josh K to fly out out to the mound, and Jude to ground out to the mound, ending the inning and maintaining the 1-1 tie.

Jack Shack would pull ahead in the top of the third. Bryan tripled to lead off, and Turbo drove him in with an RBI double, putting Jack Shack ahead 2-1. Josh D then singled, scoring Turbo from second, and Jack Shack led 3-1. Adam R hit a sacrifice fly, moving Josh D into scoring position at second, but the rally would end there. Josh K got Bryan to ground out to center for the second out, stranding Josh D at second, ending the inning.

Guacamol-yay narrowed the lead in the bottom of the third. Ben led off with a single, and two batters later, Cory hit an RBI double to score him from first, making the score 3-2. The tying run was in scoring position, but Adam R stranded another runner, retiring Josh K for the second out of the inning.

Josh K retired Jack Shack in order in the top of the fourth, and Adam R matched him, sending Jude and Ben of Guacamol-yay down consecutively in the bottom of the fourth.

Cory doubled with one out in the bottom of the fifth for his fourth hit of the game. Adam R continued to avoid damage, however, retiring Josh K to strand the tying run at second, ending the fifth with the score 3-2.

Josh K sent Josh D and Adam R down in order in the top of the sixth, and Guacamol-yay needed one run to extend the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Jude led off the inning with a double, and the tying run was on second with no outs. Ben followed with a single, putting runners on the corners, and both the tying and go-ahead runs were on base for Guacamol-yay. Once again, and for the final time, Adam R got out of a jam when Adam grounded out to the mound, and Adam R stepped on the mound with Ben in between bases, completing a double play that ended the inning and the game.

The 3-2 victory moved Jack Shack to 1-1 on the year, and Guacamol-yay fell to 0-2.

Tom W’s Bat and Tom K’s Arm Carry Shady Characters to 8-1 Win Over Guacamol-yay

Tom W. started the 2019 season hot, with extra-base hits in his first three at-bats. He went 3-for-5 with a double and two homers to lead Shady Characters to an 8-1 win in their season opener.

In their first game since falling to Loss Mitigation in the 2018 Wiffle Series, Shady Characters dusted off their bats and arms and handed Guacamol-yay a loss in the new squad’s first game as an EWL franchise. Tom W led Shady Characters on offense, going 3-for-5, with two homers a double, and five RBI, and Tom K was dominant on the mount, allowing only one run on three hits in a complete game win.

EWL rookie, Jude, took the mound for Guacamol-yay, and he fell behind early as Shady Characters jumped out to a lead in the top of the first. Joe, also a rookie, led off with a single in his first career at-bat. Two batters later, Tom W hit a towering two-run blast to left, putting Shady Characters up 2-0.

Shady Characters would add to their lead in the top of the second. Mike singled in his first career EWL at-bat, and two batters later, Dylan drove him in with an RBI double that made the score 3-0. Tom W then hit a towering fly that was misplayed, and after several throwing errors, Tom raced around the bases for an inside-the-park two-run homer that extended the Shady Characters lead to 5-0. Tom K singled for his first hit of the 2019 season, but Jude escaped further damage, retiring Mike to end the inning.

Josh singled in his first career at-bat for Guacamol-yay, but his squad couldn’t rally. Tom K retired Jude and Ben in order to strand the runner, ending the second inning.

Shady Characters continued to hit Jude in the top of the third. Joe singled, and two batters later, Tom hit an RBI double, making the score 6-0. Tom K then singled, scoring Tom W from second, and the lead extended to 7-0. Jude retired Mike to end the inning, and it would be the last batter he faced in the game.

Tom K continued to roll in the bottom of the third, retiring Adam and fanning Cody to maintain the seven run lead.

Guacamol-yay turned to bullpen by committee in the top of the fourth. Josh made his first career pitching appearance, and after giving up a one-out double to Dylan, he retired Tom W to strand the runner, ending the inning.

Jude got hit hard on the mound and took the loss for Guacamol-yay. He also went 1-for-3 with an RBI double in his first EWL game.

Guacamol-yay threatened and showed signs of life in the bottom of the fourth. Josh singled, and Jude drove him in with an RBI double, putting Guacamol-yay on the board and cutting the score to 7-1. The rally ended there, however, as Tom K retired Ben and Adam to strand Jude, ending the inning.

Cory made his first career pitching appearance in the top of the fifth. He gave up a one-out double to Mike, and Joe drove him in with an RBI double, making the score 8-1. Cory then retired Dylan to end the inning.

Cheap Goats Rally Late to Top Jack Shack 7-4 in 2019 EWL Season Opener

Dinger went 2-for-4 at the plate, with a two-run homer, a single, a sacrifice fly and three RBI, in addition to earning a complete game win in Cheap Goats 7-4 victory over Jack Shack.

After trailing 4-3 at the midpoint of the first game of the 2019 EWL season, Cheap Goats rallied with four unanswered runs in the final two innings to pull ahead of Jack Shack and win 7-4. Joey went 4-for-5 with four doubles to lead Cheap Goats, and Dinger pitched the complete game win, finishing the outing with four scoreless innings.

Cheap Goats scored the first run of the EWL season right away, when Jordan led off the top of the first with a double, and Joey drove him in with an RBI double that made the score 1-0. Josh, Jack Shack’s starter, then retired Dinger and EWL rookie, Emily, to end the inning.

Jack Shack bounced back in the bottom of the first, tying the game. Josh started the inning with a double, and two batters later, Brian drove him in with an RBI single in the first at-bat of his wiffle career.

Two batters later, Dave registered his first career wiffle hit with a one-out double, but Josh stranded him, retiring Jordan to end the inning and preserve the one-run lead.

Dinger was effective in his first start of 2019, allowing four runs on nine hits in the complete game win.

Emily hit an RBI single, the first hit of her EWL career, scoring Joey to extend the Cheap Goats lead to 6-4. Josh retired Dave to end the inning, and Jack Shack trailed by two runs.

Joey went 4-for-5 to lead Cheap Goats, and all four of his hits were doubles, one shy of the single-game EWL record.

Turbo led off the bottom of the fifth with a double off the fence, but was caught out as he ran past second base. Josh followed with a triple, his fourth extra-base hit of the game, but Dinger got out of the jam when Adam hit a line drive to right-center that Joey snagged for the second out of the inning.

Cheap Goats would add an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Jordan singled to lead off the inning, and Joey doubled to put two runners in scoring position with no outs. Dinger hit a high fly in right field territory, which Josh caught for an out, but Jordan tagged to score on the play, extending the Cheap Goats lead to 7-4. Josh then retired Emily to end the inning, and Jack Shack trailed by three heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Jordan went 3-for-5 for Cheap Goats, with a single, two doubles, an RBI, and three runs scored.

Dinger closed things out quietly in the final frame, retiring Bryan and Turbo in order, giving Cheap Goats the 7-4 opening game victory.

The win moved Cheap Goats to 1-0 on the season, and the loss dropped Jack Shack to 0-1.

The 2019 EWL Season is Underway!

The 2019 Ellsworth Wiffleball League season began on Tuesday, May 7th at the Wiffle Diamond in Shadyside when EWL commissioner Joey threw out the ceremonial first pitch to the league’s longest tenured player, Dinger, of Cheap Goats.

It was a beautiful night on the diamond, as wiffleball returned to Shadyside for the ninth year.

This season marks the largest influx of new players the EWL has ever seen. Defending champions Questionable Outfit/Loss Mitigation have disbanded, and all four of the rosters are loaded with rookies.

The week 1 games were hard fought, and all signs indicate that this season will be another stellar year for wiffleball action. New wiffle legends will be made, and a new champion will be crowned for the first time in six years.

Porkswords Stun Loss Mitigation 9-8 with Walk-Off Win to Conclude Postponed Game

In only his second career at-bat, John hit his first home run in the EWL, a walk-over solo shot that gave the Porkswords a stunning 7-6 win over Loss Mitigation.

Loss Mitigation led 5-3 when their week one game with the Porkswords was resumed, and they had taken an 8-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Porkswords mounted a dramatic and stunning rally. The Porkswords scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth, culminating in John’s walk-off solo homer, to win 9-8 and send Loss Mitigation to 0-2 on the season. Every Porksword reached base or drove in a run during the rally, and the first walk-off win of the 2018 EWL season moved the Porkswords to 1-1 in the standings.

Dustin took the mound for the Porkswords when the game started in week one, and he fell behind early. Bob led off the game with a solo homer, putting Loss Mitigation ahead 1-0. Two batters later Nate doubled with one out, but Dustin stranded the runner, retiring Norris to end the inning.

Nate started for Loss Mitigation, and after giving up a lead off single to Josh, he retired the side, and the score remained 1-0.

Mike makes yet another incredible one-handed catch for Loss Mitigation, as his teammates watch in awe.

Mike continued to swing a hot bat for Loss Mitigation, and in the top of the second, his one-out solo homer extended the score to 2-0. Nate retired the Porkswords in order in the bottom of the second.

Loss Mitigation added several insurance runs in the top of the third. Norris led off the inning with a triple, and Bob drove him in with an RBI double that made the score 3-0. Mike then doubled, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Dustin got Nate to ground out to left for the first out of the inning, but Bob scored on the play, extending the Loss Mitigation lead to 4-0. Mike moved to third on the play, but Dustin stranded him, retiring Norris for the second out of the inning.

Nate continued to roll in the bottom of the third, and Loss Mitigation led by four runs through three innings.

Mike kept punishing the Porkswords in the top of the fourth, hitting another one-out solo homer, making the score 5-0.

Down five, the Porkswords cut into the Loss Mitigation lead in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Josh hit a solo homer, putting the Porkswords on the board at 5-1. Dustin followed with a homer, making the score 5-2. When Miller also homered, the Porkswords’ back-to-back-to-back homers had cut the deficit to 5-3. Nate finally recorded the second out of the inning, and the game was postponed due to darkness with the score 5-3.

The game was resumed in week 2, with Loss Mitigation returning the same lineup, and the Porkswords inserting Steve and John into their lineup, each making their 2018 EWL debuts. Norris led off the top of the fifth with a single, but Dustin stranded him, and the score remained 5-3.

Two batters later, Bob doubled, and Mike followed with his third homer in the contest, a two-run bomb to left that extended the Loss Mitigation lead to 8-4. Dustin retired Nate to end the inning, and the Porkswords trailed by four runs heading into their final at-bat.

John, making his first career EWL appearance, doubled in his first at-bat, and he moved to third when Josh followed with a single. With no outs and two runners in scoring position, Dustin singled, scoring John and cutting the score to 8-5. Miller came to the plate as the tying run, and he hit an RBI double to score Josh, making the score 8-6. Steve then came to bat as the tying run, with runners on the corners. He grounded out to deep right-center for the first out of the inning, but both runners were able to score on the play. The two-RBI groundout tied the game at 8-8, and the Porkswords had drawn even with Loss Mitigation. Norris remained on the mound, and John came to the plate for his second career at-bat. He looked calm and collected, and he raked a solo homer to deep left-center, ending the game. The walk-off homer was the first ever by an EWL rookie, particularly a rookie in their first career game. The Porkswords had rallied from four runs down to score five in the bottom of the sixth, beating Loss Mitigation in an epic week one (and carry over to week two) game.

The win moved the Porkswords to 1-1 on the season, and the loss dropped Loss Mitigation to 0-2.
