Blose and Joey each homered twice as Cookies & Cream easily defeated the Ham Slams 8-3 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five first round series.

Reigning EWL Pitch King Guthrie started on the mound for Cookies & Cream hoping to continue his late season success after a rocky start to his 2014 campaign. Things didn’t look good, as the game’s first batter, Anthony, crushed a solo homer to deep left-center, putting the Ham Slams ahead immediately 1-0. Guthrie settled down after giving up the homer, retiring Steve and fanning Charlie to retire the side.

The Ham Slams sent their ace, Charlie, to the mound to face Cookies & Cream. He retired Guthrie to start the bottom of the first, but the next batter, Blose, continued to dominate at the plate, crushing a solo homer to tie the game at 1-1. He retired the next batter, Joey, ending the inning with the game tied.

Anthony doubled to lead off the top of the second and scored when the next bater, Steve, hit an RBI double to make the score 2-1. Steve advanced to third when Charlie grounded out for the first out of the inning, but Guthrie stranded him, striking out Anthony to end the inning.

Charlie cruised through the bottom of the second, retiring the side in order to maintain the 2-1 Ham Slams lead.

Guthrie pitched his first hitless inning in the top of the third, retiring the side in order.

Down 2-1, Cookies & Cream got out their bats in the bottom of the third. Blose led off the inning with a solo homer, his second of the game, tying the game at 2-2. Joey followed with a single and moved to second when Dinger also singled. Guthrie flew out for the first out of the inning, but Blose would then double, scoring one run and putting Cookies & Cream ahead 3-2. With one out and runners on second and third, Joey hit a three-run blast to left, and Cookies & Cream had opened up a 6-2 lead. Dinger and Guthrie would each single to put runners on first and second with one out and Blose coming to the plate, but Charlie avoided a catastrophe, retiring Blose to end the inning.

Down 6-2, the Ham Slams would cut into the Cookies & Cream lead in the top of the fourth. Anthony led off with a double and scored when Steve followed with a single. Guthrie would retire the next two hitters to end the inning, and the deficit had been reduced to 6-3.

Cookies & Cream would immediately make up the lost runs in the bottom of the fourth. Joey led off the inning with a solo homer, and Dinger followed with a solo shot of his own. The back-to-back homers extended the Cookies & Cream lead to 8-3. Charlie would retire Guthrie and Blose to end the inning, but the Ham Slams now trailed by 5 runs.

Guthrie retired the side in order in the top of the fifth, maintaining the lead. The Ham Slams would turn to their bullpen in the bottom of the fifth, replacing Charlie on the mound with Steve. He pitched a flawless inning of relief, retiring Joey and Dinger consecutively.

Down 8-3, the Ham Slams would try to rally in the top of the sixth. Guthrie retired Anthony to start the inning, but Steve and Charlie each followed with one-out singles to put runners on first and second with one out. But the rally would end there, as Guthrie retired Anthony for the second time in the inning, stranding both runners and ending the game.

The win put Cookies & Cream ahead 1-0 in the best-of-five first round series with the Ham Slams.
