Nate of Shady Characters Named Pabst Blue Ribbon Wiffler of the Week

The defending champs continued to dominate the Wiffler of the Week award in 2022, as their rookie Nate earned the honors with a big performance in week 5. Despite having single digit games under his belt, Nate has been an asset in the field and at the plate, and after piling up more hits and RBI, he was voted the Wiffler of the Week for week 5.

In a 5-1 win over the Guac Boys, Nate went 1-for-4 with a single.

In a 16-6 blowout win against Jack Shack, Nate went 4-for-5 with a double, a triple, two homers, three runs scored, and six RBI.

In total, Nate went 5-for-9 with a single, a double, a triple, two homers, three runs scored, and six RBI in week 5.

This is the first time Nate has been named Wiffler of the Week in his short wiffle career.

Cheap Goats Top Guac Boys 5-4 in Extra Innings in Last Game of First Half

Joe’s solo shot with one out in the bottom of the seventh extended the game for Cheap Goats, and he had one of the best games of his wiffle career, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and homer.

The last game of the first half of the 2022 was a tight one, as Miller hit an RBI walk-off double to drive in the winning run in a 5-4 win for Cheap Goats over the Guac Boys. Dinger pitched the complete game win, hit three singles, and scored the winning run, Joey and Joe also had three hits, and Miller had two doubles, including the game-winner. Brum went 4-for-6 with three solo homers in the Guac Boys loss, as the first half of the 2022 regular season came to a conclusion.

Dinger retired the first batter he faced, Anthony, in the top of the first. The next batter, Jude, hit a solo homer to right-center, putting the Guac Boys up 1-0. Dinger then retired Brum to end the inning.

Jude started for the Guac Boys, and he retired Miller and Joe in order in the bottom of the first. 

Dinger retired Alec and Anthony in order in the top of the second. 

Joey led off the bottom of the second with a triple, and Christian drove him in with an RBI single, tying the game at 1-1. Dinger followed with a single, putting runners on first and second with no outs. Jude escaped the jam, however, getting Miller to fly out to the mound, and he doubled up Christian on the play, ending the inning.

The Guac Boys took another lead in the top of the third. With one out, Brum launched a solo homer to center, making the score 2-1. Alec followed with a single, but Dinger stranded him, retiring Anthony to end the inning.

Brum went 4-for-6 with three solo homers in the Guac Boys loss.

Cheap Goats bounced back in the bottom of the third. Joe doubled, and when Joey grounded out to center for the first out, Joe scored from second, tying the score at 2-2. Christian then tripled, and Dinger drove him in with an RBI single, putting Cheap Goats ahead 3-2. Jude then retired Miller for the second out of the inning, stranding Dinger at first.

The Guac Boys continued the see-saw game in the top of the fourth. For the second consecutive inning, with one out, Brum hit a solo homer, and the game was tied at 3-3. Alec followed with a double, but Dinger once against stranded him, striking out Anthony to end the inning.

Jude rolled through the bottom of the fourth, retiring Joe and Joey in order.

Dinger matched him in the top of the fifth, sending Jude and Brum down consecutively. 

Dinger, who pitched the complete game win and scored the winning run for Cheap Goats, extends to catch a fly ball for an out.

Jude pitched his second consecutive perfect frame in the bottom of the fifth, retiring Christian and Dinger in order. 

Anthony singled with one out in the top of the sixth, but the Guac Boys couldn’t plate the go-ahead run. Dinger retired Jude to strand him, ending the inning.

Cheap Goats threatened in the bottom of the sixth, but Jude escaped a huge jam. Miller doubled to lead off the inning, and he moved to third when Joe followed with a double. With no outs, two runners in scoring position, and the winning run on third, the Guac Boys intentionally walked Joey to load the bases. The move seemed risky, but it paid off. Jude got both Christian and Dinger to fly out to the mound, stranding all three runners and sending the game to extra innings.

The Guac Boys immediately capitalized, as Brum led off the top of the seventh with his third solo shot of the game, and the homer put his squad in front 4-3. Anthony later singled with one out, but Dinger stranded him, retiring Jude to end the inning.

Jude retired Miller for the first out in the bottom of the seventh, and the Guac Boys were one out away from a victory. Joe came to the plate and launched a solo homer to left-center. The clutch blast tied the game at 4-4. Joey followed with a double, and the winning run was in scoring position. Jude once again escaped a jam, retiring Christian for the second out of the inning, and stranding Joey at second. 

One of the most unusual plays in EWL history occurred in the top of the eighth. Brum singled, and Alec followed with a single, putting two runners on with no outs. The next batter, Anthony, hit a fly ball between first and second base. The ball landed and bounced directly to the pitcher’s mound, catching both Brum and Alec in between bases for a double play, ending the inning.

The heartbreaking play for the Guac Boys carried over into the bottom of the eighth. Dinger led off with a single, and the next batter, Miller, hit an RBI double off the fence, scoring Dinger. The clutch hit won the game for Cheap Goats, giving them an unusual and dramatic 5-4 extra-innings victory.

The win moved Cheap Goats to 3-7, and the loss dropped the Guac Boys to 4-6.

Four Shady Characters Go Deep in 16-6 Rout of Jack Shack

Shady Characters finished their historically dominant first half with a 16-6 beatdown of Jack Shack in which all five players had at least three hits, four players hit homers, and the offense combined for nineteen total hits. Jason had five hits and two homers and Nate drove in six runs as Shady Characters easily moved to 10-0 on the season, finishing the first half of the regular season undefeated, becoming the first and only team team to do it in league history.

Tom started on the mound for Shady Characters, and after allowing a one-out single to Austin, he retired Josh to strand the runner at first, ending the inning.

Tom, who earned the win and had four hits on offense, delivers a pitch to Austin, who went 4-for-5 in the Jack Shack loss.

Brian started for Jack Shack, and he retired Shady Characters in order in the bottom of the first.

Jack Shack took an early lead in the top of the second. Adam singled to start the inning, and he moved from first to third when Brian singled. Rob grounded out for the first out of the inning, but Adam scored on the play, giving Jack Shack a 1-0 lead. Austin then doubled, scoring Brian to make the lead 2-0. Tom then retired Josh to strand Austin at second, ending the inning.

Shady Characters bounced back in the bottom of the second. Lucas doubled with one out, and Nate drove him in with an RBI double that cut the score to 2-1. Mike then singled, scoring Nate from second, and the game was tied at 2-2. Jason put Shady Characters in front for good with a two-run shot, making the score 4-2. Tom followed with a solo homer, and the back-to-back blasts gave Shady Characters a 5-2 lead. Brian retired Lucas to end the inning, and Shady Characters led by three runs.

Shady Characters turned to the bullpen and brought Lucas to the mound in the top of the third. He allowed a one-out double to Brian, but stranded him at second, retiring Rob to end the inning.

Shady Characters took a commanding lead in the bottom of the third. Nate doubled, and two batters later, Jason hit his second two-run homer in as many innings, putting Shady Characters in front 7-2. Tom doubled, and he moved to third when Lucas followed with a single. Nate cleared the bases with a three-run shot, giving Shady Characters a 10-2 lead. Mike followed with a single and moved from first to third when Jason doubled. Tom emptied the bases with a two-RBI single, and Shady Characters led 12-2. Brian retired Lucas to end the inning, and Jack Shack trailed by ten.

Nate, who drove in six of Shady Characters’ sixteen runs, connects on one of his four extra-base hits in the game.

After retiring Austin to start the top of the fourth, Lucas allowed a one-out solo homer to Josh, narrowing the Shady Characters lead to 12-3. Lucas then retired Adam to end the inning.

Shady Characters blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth. Jack Shack called Adam from the bullpen to the mound, and he was hit hard immediately. After retiring Nate for the first out of the inning, he gave up a solo homer to Mike, which made the score 13-3. Jason and Tom each singled, putting runners on the corners with one out. Lucas doubled, scoring Jason to push the lead to 14-3. Nate once again cleared the bases, hitting an RBI double that scored Tom and Lucas, and the lead was 16-3. Adam finally retired Mike to end the inning, and Shady Characters had taken a thirteen run lead.

Jack Shack showed some heart in the top of the fifth. Rob singled with one out and moved from first to third when Austin followed with a single. Josh followed with a three-run homer, cutting the score to 16-6. Adam doubled, but the rally stopped there. Lucas retired Brian to strand Adam at second, ending the inning as Shady Characters maintained a ten-run lead.

Jason singled to start the bottom of the fifth, but Adam avoided another disastrous inning. He struck out Tom and retired Lucas to strand Jason at second, ending the inning.

Lucas allowed a one-out single to Austin in the top of the sixth before retiring Josh for the second out of the inning, ending the game and giving Shady Characters the 16-6 victory.

The win moved Shady Characters to 10-0 on the season, and the loss dropped Jack Shack to 3-7.

Christian Tops Josh in Pitcher’s Duel as Cheap Goats Beat Jack Shack 3-2

Christian had his best outing of the 2022 season on the mound, allowing two runs on four hits in a complete game win, and went 2-for-3 with a single, a double, and scored the winning run for Cheap Goats.

In one of the best defensive games of the 2022 season, Cheap Goats outlasted Jack Shack, pulling ahead in the bottom of the fifth and hanging on to win 3-2. Christian allowed only two runs to Josh’s three, and he and Joey each had two hits for Cheap Goats in a win that snapped a five game losing streak for the last-place squad that lost in the Wiffle Series just a season ago.

Christian retired the side in order in the top of the first, and he would get some run support in the bottom of the inning.

Josh, Jack Shack’s starter, allowed a leadoff triple to Miller. He got the next batter, Joe, to ground out to center, but Miller scored on the play, putting Cheap Goats ahead 1-0. Joey, the next batter, hit a one-out single, but was caught out trying to advance the hit into a double, ending the inning.

Christian rolled through the top of the second, sending Josh and Adam down in order.

Josh matched him in the bottom of the second, retiring Christian and Dinger consecutively.

Jack Shack evened things up in the top of the third. With one out, Rob hit a solo homer to left, tying the game at 1-1. Christian then retired Austin to end the inning.

Cheap Goats reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the third. Joe doubled with one out, and Joey drove him in with an RBI double, putting Cheap Goats back in front 2-1. Christian followed with a single, putting runners on the corners with one out, but Josh escaped further damage. He retired Dinger to strand both runners, ending the inning.

Joey went 2-for-3 with a single, a double, and an RBI as Cheap Goat snapped their five game losing streak.

Christian returned to form in the top of the fourth, retiring Josh and Adam in order.

Josh once again matched him in the bottom of the fourth, retiring Miller and Joe consecutively.

Austin singled with one out in the top of the fifth, but Christian stranded him, retiring Josh to end the inning.

Down two runs, Jack Shack needed a rally in the top of the sixth. Adam led off the inning with a solo homer to deep right-center, narrowing the score to 3-2. The rally would end there, however, as Christian retired Brian and Rob to end the inning, giving Cheap Goats a 3-2 win.

The win moved Cheap Goats to 2-7 on the season, and the loss dropped Jack Shack to 3-6.

Mike and Lucas Combine for Seven Hits as Shady Characters Beat Guac Boys 5-1

Mike went a perfect 4-for-4 with three singles, a triple, two runs scored, and two RBI as Shady Characters picked up another victory.

In one of their closest matchups to date, Shady Characters beat the Guac Boys by only four runs, 5-1, behind seven combined hits from Mike and Lucas. In what has been a historically dominant season for Shady Characters, the fact that a 5-1 win is surprising shows just how impressive their offensive output has been. Jason also had two extra-base hits in the win, and Tom pitched the complete game as Shady Characters moved to 9-0 on the season.

Tom started on the mound, and after allowing a leadoff single to Jude, he retired Brum and Bohn to end the inning, stranding Jude at first.

Mike led off the bottom of the first with at triple, but Guac Boys starter Bohn found a way out of the jam unscathed. He got Jason to fly out to the mound and then struck out Tom to strand Mike at third, ending the inning with the score tied.

The Guac Boys took a lead in the top of the second. Austin led off with a triple, and after Anthony struck out, Jude hit an RBI single to score Austin. Tom retired Brum to end the inning, and the Guac Boys led 1-0.

Shady Characters immediately bounced back in the bottom of the second. Lucas led off with a triple, and after Nate struck out, Mike hit an RBI single, scoring Lucas to tie the game at 1-1. Jason then tripled, scoring Mike, and Shady Characters took a 2-1 lead. Bohn then retired Tom to end the inning, stranding Jason at third.

Lucas continued the best season of his wiffle career, going 3-for-4 with two singles, a triple, and three runs scored in the Shady Characters win.

Tom was dominant on the mound, allowing only one run one four hits, moving to 9-0 as Shady Characters remained undefeated through nine games.

Bohn retired Lucas to start the bottom of the fourth before allowing a one-out single to Nate. Nate, however, tried to extend the hit into a double and was caught out on the play, ending the inning.

Bohn singled with one out in the top of the fifth, but Guac Boys couldn’t rally. Tom retired Austin to strand Bohn at first, ending the inning.

Mike singled to start the bottom of the fifth, and two batters later, Tom hit a one-out single. Lucas followed with a single, creating a rare bases-loaded situation for Nate. Nate couldn’t make history with a rare grand slam, however, as Bohn got him to fly out to center, stranding all three runners and ending the inning.

Tom remained on the mound to close things out in the top of the sixth, and he made quick work of the Guac Boys. He retired Anthony and Jude in order, ending the inning and the game, giving Shady Characters a 5-1 win.

The win moved Shady Characters to 9-0 on the season, and the loss dropped the Guac Boys to 4-5.
