Ron Named 2011 EWL Manager of the Year

2011 EWL Manager of the Year Ron Walker

In a very close vote, Ron, manager and captain of 4 out of 5 Dentists, has been named the 2011 EWL Manager of the Year.

Ron led the Dentists to a .500 record at 10-10 and the #3 seed in the EWL Playoffs. The Dentists started 0-5, but finished the season 10-5, including a five game winning streak. Despite the first quarter of the season with a depleted roster, he pulled the pieces together and molded his squad into a championship contender. The Dentists were within a single win of clinching the #2 seed, and were in the hunt for the pennant through week 9 of the regular season.

Ron went to great efforts to put a full squad on the field, using 8 different players throughout the season for at least one game. The Dentists had 4 or more players more than any other team in the league throughout the regular season. Ron was one of 5 EWL players to play in all 20 regular season games.

Ron played and managed hard, demanding full effort from his team, setting an example with his own play, and respecting the game. He was a loyal ambassador of the EWL and wiffleball, and represented the intensity, dedication, skill, and leadership required of an EWL manager and star.

Guthrie finished second in voting, and had a great season as a manager as well. He led the Caucasians to the best record in the league and the first ever EWL pennant. He earned one more league vote than Ron, and finished second in overall voting after the commissioner vote was placed.

Ron will be presented with the EWL Manager of the Year Award on Tuesday during the Round 1 playoffs.

2011 EWL Awards to Be Announced

Starting today, one EWL season-ending award will be announced each day up until this week’s playoff games on Tuesday. The awards will be presented before, during, and in-between the games this Tuesday.

Here is the schedule:

Friday: Manager of the Year
Saturday: Field Masters
Sunday: Pitch King
Monday: All-AWBL Team
Tuesday: Wiffler of the Year

The results of voting will be posted along with the winners.

Caucasians Send Pumice! to the Brink; Dentists and Fish Sticks Exchange Blows

After one week of the EWL Playoffs, the Caucasian Vaginas have Pumice on Slow! on the ropes after winning both games. Pumice! will have to win three straight games to advance to the EWL Championship, and one game to extend their season.

The Fish Sticks were two innings away from sharing a 2-0 series lead with the Caucasians, but the Dentists showed resiliency, storming back into the series and drawing a 1-1 tie after two games.

Barring unusual circumstances, two teams will advance to the EWL Championship on Tuesday, July 19th, and two teams will have played their last wiffleball game of 2011, and possibly their career.

Caucasians Hold Off Late Pumice! Rally to Take Commanding 2-0 Series Lead

Les pitched a complete game win and went 2-4 with a HR in Game 2

Les pitched a complete game win as the Caucasians weathered the storm to top Pumice on Slow! 4-3 in Game 2 of their series.

Les, who came into the game having thrown 10 consecutive scoreless innings, three shy of tying the record, added to his streak in the top of the first when he retired Luke and Gaurav in order.

Staff ace Gaurav started on the mound for Pumice!, and he matched Les in the bottom of the second by retiring Frosty and Morrison consecutively.

With the game scoreless, Les notched another inning on his belt in the bottom of the second, as Brad and John were sent down in order.

The Caucasians got the first hit of the game in the bottom of the second, when Guthrie led off with a solo homer, making the score 1-0. Les made back-to-back homers when he crushed a solo shot of his own, extending the Vaginas lead to 2-0. Frosty singled to keep the rally going, but Gaurav settled down, retiring Morrison and Guthrie to strand the runner at first.

Down two runs, Pumice! got on the board for the first time in the series, ending Les’s scoreless inning streak and cutting the Caucasian lead in half. Luke, who had been robbed by the tree earlier, hit solo homer to make the score 2-1. Les then got both Gaurav and Brad to fly out to the mound, ending the top of the third.

Gaurav retired Les and Frosty in order in the bottom of the third, holding the Pumice! deficit to a single run.

Les got back on track in the top of the fourth, as John and Luke were retired in order.

Higgins entered the game for Morrison in the bottom of the fourth, and he made an immediate impact. He led off the bottom of the fourth with a home run, pushing the score to 3-1. Guthrie followed by flying out for the first out of the inning, and after a one-out Les single, Gaurav got Morrison to ground out for the second out of the inning, stranding the runner.

With the deficit back at two runs, Gaurav led off the top of the firth with a solo homer, making the score 3-2. The next batter, Brad, singled, putting the tying runner on base with no outs. But Pumice! couldn’t move the runner, as John and Luke were retired in order, ending the top half of the inning.

Just like he did in the fourth, Higgins led off the bottom of the fifth with his second consecutive homer, putting the Caucasians back up two runs at 4-2. Gaurav then retired Frosty and Les in order to send the game to the sixth inning.

With the score 4-2, Pumice! needed two runs to tie the game. They got one when the first batter of the inning, Gaurav, hit a solo home run, his second in as many at-bats. The bomb cut the score to 4-3. The Caucasians discussed going to the bullpen, but decided give Les a chance to close out the game. And that is what he did, as Brad and John each flew out to end the game, giving the Causcasians the 4-3 win and a 2-0 lead in the best of five series.

– Gaurav carried Pumice! offensively, going 2 for 4 with 2 HR and 2 RBI

Dentists Rally from Four Down, Stun Fish Sticks 7-6 to Even Series

Braydn had 2 HR, 2 RBI, and 5 put-outs in the Dentists come-from-behind Game 2 win

Up 6-2 through four innings, the Fish Sticks imploded as the Dentists scored five unanswered runs to come from behind and win Game 2 7-6, tying the five game series at one game apiece.

Joey took the mound for the Fish Sticks, coming off a two-win week 10. He retired Braydn and Marr in order in the top of the first.

Pitch King contender Chris started for the Dentists, and got into trouble early. Blose singled to start the game, and moved to second when Dinger grounded out for the first out of the inning. With a runner in scoring position, Joey hit a two-run bomb, putting the Fish Sticks up 2-0. Chris then retired Vassallo for the second out of the inning.

Down two, the Dentists couldn’t cut into the lead in the top of the second. Joey sent down Ron and Chris in order for a perfect second.

The Sticks added to their lead in the top of the second. Chris retired Blose for the first out when he flew out to right field. But the next batter, Dinger, hit a solo homer, moving the score to 3-0. Joey flew out for the second out of the inning.

Joey remained perfect through three innings, as he retired Braydn and Marr in order in the top of the third.

Vassallo led off the bottom of the third by flying out to right field, but Blose followed with a solo homer, his second of the game, putting the Sticks up 4-0. Chris retired Dinger for the second out of the inning.

The Dentists finally got on the board in the top of the fourth, when Ron led off the inning with his team’s first hit, a solo homer, making the score 4-1. Chris flew out for the first out of the inning, but the next batter, Braydn, hit a solo home run, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Marr then grounded out for the second out of the inning.

With the score 4-2, the Fish Sticks made up for the runs they gave up in the top of the fourth by adding to their lead in the bottom half of the inning. Joey led off with a home run, moving the score to 5-2. Vassallo flew out for the first out of the inning, and with one out Blose crushed a solo homer to right, giving the Sticks a 6-2 lead. Dinger grounded out to left for the second out of the inning, and the Sticks were up four runs through four innings.

Despite holding a comfortable lead, the wheels began to fall off for the Fish Sticks in the top of the fifth. Ron led off the inning with his second solo homer in as many at-bats, cutting the score to 6-3. Chris made back-to-back jacks when he followed with a home run, and Braydn followed with a home run of his own, giving the Dentists back-to-back-to-back home runs. The three consecutive home runs chased starter Joey, unable to record an out in the fifth, from the mound, as the Sticks turned to Game 1 starter Dinger. The first batter Dinger faced, Marr, crushed a solo home run to center, tying the game a 6-6, as the Dentists had hit back-to-back-to-back-to-back homers. The Dentists had surged back to tie the game with no outs, but couldn’t take the lead, as Dinger settled down and retired Ron and Chris to end the disastrous fifth inning.

Joey led off the top of the fifth by grounding out to left, and Vassallo hit a one out double, putting the lead run in scoring position. But Blose couldn’t drive him in, as Chris got him to fly out to right field, ending the bottom of the fifth inning with the game tied.

Dinger retired Braydn to lead off the top of the sixth, but the next batter, Marr, hit his second consecutive homer, giving the Dentists their first lead of the series at 7-6. Dinger retired Ron to end the inning, sending the Fish Sticks to their final at-bat.

Needing a run to extend the game, the Sticks couldn’t get their offense going. Chris retired Dinger and Joey in order to end the game, giving the Dentists a 7-6 win, and evening the series at 1-1.

Game Notes:
– the Dentists became the first team to hit four consecutive home runs
– the Dentists did not have a baserunner in the game, as they scored 7 runs on 7 solo home runs
– seven home runs is a league record for most by a team in a single game
– Braydn, Marr, and Ron each went 2 for 5 with 2 solo homers, and Chris added the final solo homer
– Blose and Joey led the Dentists; Blose went 3 for 5 with 2 HR, a single, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI, while Joey went 2 for 5 with 2 HR, 2 runs scored, and 3 RBI
– Joey gave up 5 runs on 5 hits in 4 innings pitched, getting a no-decision
– Dinger gave up 2 runs on 2 hits in 2 innings pitched, taking the loss in relief for the Fish Sticks
