Porkswords Hang on to Narrowly Defeat Shady Characters 9-8

After trailing late, the Porkswords pulled ahead in the top of the sixth with a rally led by Josh and Steve, and held on to beat Shady Characters 9-8. Josh, Steve, and Adam homered and contributed three hits each, and Steve’s two-run homer put the Porkswords ahead for good in the sixth inning.

Tom K started for Shady Characters with two innings of eligibility remaining in week 5. He fell behind early, as the Porkswords jumped out to a lead in the top of the first. Josh led off the game with a double, and two batters later, Rair Smokers, making his debut for the Porkswords, drove him in with an RBI double that made the score 1-0. Adam then tripled, scoring Rair, and the Porkswords led 2-0. Tom K retired Josh to end the inning, and his offense would bounce back in the bottom of the first.

Josh took the mound for the Porkswords, and the first batter he faced, Dylan, hit a solo homer to right-center, cutting the score to 2-1. Erich followed with a double, and he scored when Tom K drove him in with an RBI triple that tied the game at 2-2. Josh got Levi Sanders to ground out for the first out of the inning, but Tom K scored on the play, putting Shady Characters ahead 3-2. Dylan followed with a double, but the Shady Characters inning would end there, as Josh retired Erich to strand the runner at second and end the inning.

The Porkswords bounced back in the top of the second to tie the game when Steve led off the inning with a solo homer. Tom K retired the next two batters to end the inning, and the score was tied at 3-3.

Levi singled with one out in the bottom of the second, but Shady Characters couldn’t regain the lead, as Josh retired Dylan to strand the runner, ending the inning with the game tied.

The Porkswords pulled back ahead in the top of the third. With Tom K at his innings limit for the week, Dylan entered the game, and the first batter he faced, Josh, hit a solo homer to right. Steve followed with a triple, and two batters later, Adam hit an RBI double to drive him in, putting the Porkswords ahead 5-3.

Tom K singled with one out in the bottom of the third, but Josh stranded a Shady Characters runner for the second consecutive inning, retiring Levi to end the inning and the Porkswords maintained a two run lead.

Dylan retired the Porkswords in order in the top of the fourth, and Shady Characters would take the lead with a big inning in the bottom of the fourth.

Dylan started the inning by providing his own run support, hitting a solo homer to right, which cut the score to 5-4. Erich followed with a solo shot, and Tom K also followed with a homer, his first career round-tripper. Shady Characters had hit three consecutive home runs, and Levi completed the rare feat of a team going 1-through-4 in the lineup with four consecutive homers when he crushed a solo shot to right. Shady Characters had hit four consecutive solo homers to start the inning, and had taken a 7-5 lead without recording an out. Dylan had a chance to tie the EWL record of five consecutive homers, but Josh got him to fly out to right-center for the first out of the inning. Josh then retired Erich for the second out to end the inning, but Shady Characters had gone from trailing by two runs to taking a two-run lead heading into the fifth.

The Porkswords cut into the deficit in the top of the fifth when Adam led off the inning with a solo homer. Dylan retired Josh and Steve to end the inning, and Shady Characters led 7-6.

Rair doubled to start the top of the sixth, and he moved from second to third on Adam’s sacrifice fly. The Porkswords were down to their last out with the tying run on third, when Josh hit a single, scoring Rair to tie the game at 7-7. Steve came to the plate with Josh on first and crushed a solo bomb to right-center, and the Porkswords now led 9-7. Dylan retired Rair to end the inning, but Shady Characters one-run lead had turned into a two-run deficit in the sixth.

Down two, Dylan helped himself out in the bottom of the sixth, leading off the inning with his third homer of the game. The solo shot cut the Porkswords lead to one, and the score was 9-8. The next batter, Erich, went down on strikes, and Shady Characters were down to their final out. Tom K singled, putting the tying run on base, but Josh buckled down and retired Levi for the second out of the inning, ending the game and giving the Porkswords a dramatic 9-8 win.

The win, the Porkswords’ third straight, moved their record to 4-5 on the season, and the loss dropped Shady Characters to 4-5.

Norris Pitches Gem as Loss Mitigation Storms Past Cheap Goats 9-2

Norris pitched the complete game win, and also went 3-for-5 at the plate with three doubles.

Norris allowed only two runs and scattered seven hits and had three extra-base hits at the plate, as Loss Mitigation rolled past Cheap Goats 9-2. Bob and Mike helped put Loss Mitigation ahead early, and Norris secured the victory late, as Cheap Goats couldn’t get their offense rolling as they were soundly defeated.

With two innings of eligibility left in week 5, Christian took the mound for Cheap Goats, and he was hit hard. Bob led off the game with a solo homer, and Loss Mitigation was ahead 1-0 immediately. Mike followed with a single, and after striking out Nate for the first out of the inning, Christian allowed a one-out double to Norris. Mike scored from first, and Loss Mitigation led 2-0. Bob followed with an RBI single, scoring Norris to put Loss Mitigation ahead 3-0, and Mike followed with a two-run blast, clearing the bases. Christian struck out Nate for the second time in the inning, ending the inning, and Cheap Goats trailed 5-0.

Norris started for Loss Migitation, and he was effective throughout the contest. Joey doubled with one out in the bottom of the first, but Cheap Goats couldn’t rally, as Norris retired Christian to strand the runner and end the inning with the score 5-0.

Christian regained command in the top of the second, retiring Norris and Bob in order, and he had reached his eight innings of eligibility for the week. Norris cruised through the bottom of the second, retiring Cheap Goats in order, and the score remained 5-0.

Cheap Goats inserted Dinger to relieve Christian, and Loss Mitigation would get to him as well. The first batter he faced, Mike, doubled, and Nate drove him in with an RBI double that extended the Cheap Goats deficit to 6-0. Norris then doubled, scoring Nate, and Loss Mitigation led 7-0. The next batter, Bob, also doubled, making four consecutive doubles for Loss Mitigation. However, Bob was caught out in between second and third on the play, and Norris was also caught trying to score. The double play ended the inning, and Loss Mitigation led by seven runs.

Jordan singled to start the bottom of the third, but once again, Cheap Goats couldn’t get their offense going. Norris retired Joey and Christian to strand the runner, and the score was 7-0 through three innings.

Dinger struck out Mike to start the top of the fourth, and after allowing a triple to Nate, he retired Norris to strand the runner, ending the inning. Norris matched him in the bottom of the fourth, retiring the side in order.

Loss Mitigation would add another insurance run in the top of the fifth when Bob led off the inning with his second homer of the game. Dinger retired Mike and Nate to end the inning, and Loss Mitigation was ahead 8-0.

Cheap Goats finally got on the board in the fifth inning. Jordan doubled to start the inning, and two batters later, Christian drove him in with an RBI single that cut the score to 8-1.

Loss Mitigation made up for the run in the top of the sixth, when Norris led off the inning with a solo homer. Dinger retired Bob and Mike to end the inning, and Cheap Goats trailed 9-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Jordan tripled with one out in the bottom of the sixth, and Joey drove him in with an RBI double that cut the score to 9-2. The rally would end there, however, as Norris retired Christian for the second out of the inning, ending the game and giving Loss Mitigation the 9-2 win.

The win moved Loss Mitigation to 6-3 on the season, and the loss dropped Cheap Goats under .500 to 4-5 for the year.

Nate Keeps Shady Characters Quiet, Bob Homers Twice in 5-3 Loss Mitigation Victory

Bob went 3-for-5 to lead Loss Mitigation, with a single, two home runs, three runs scored, and three RBI.

Bob went 3-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI and also earned a save, and Nate also homered and allowed only three runs in five innings, as Loss Mitigation topped Shady Characters 5-3. Shady Characters couldn’t figure out Loss Mitigation’s pitching, and Bob and Nate provided just enough offense to secure the victory, maintaining Loss Mitigation’s spot atop the EWL standings.

Tom K took the mound for Shady Characters, and he looked good early, retiring the league’s two most potent hitters, Bob and Mike, in order in the top of the first. Dylan doubled off Nate to start the bottom of the first, but he was stranded, as Erich and Tom K were retired to end the first with the game scoreless.

Loss Mitigation got on the board in the top of the second when Nate led off the inning with a solo homer. Two batters later, Bob homered, and his solo shot put Loss Mitigation ahead 2-0.

Shady Characters would cut into the lead in the bottom of the second. With one out, Dylan hit a towering solo homer to right-center, and the score was 2-1. Erich followed with a triple, but Shady Characters couldn’t tie the game, as Nate retired Tom K to strand the runner and end the inning.

Loss Mitigation added to their lead in the top of the third. Tom K struck out Nate for the first out of the inning, but after allowing a one-out single to Norris, Bob crushed a monster two-run blast to right, putting Loss Mitigation in front 4-1. Mike followed with a triple, but Tom K avoided further damage, retiring Nate to strand the runner and end the inning with Shady Characters down by three runs.

Norris led off the top of the fourth with a double, but Loss Mitigation couldn’t extend the lead, as Tom K retired Bob and Mike to strand the runner, ending the inning.

Erich led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Tom K followed with a single, but Shady Characters couldn’t rally, as Nate retired the next two batters to end the inning with Loss Mitigation ahead by two runs.

Tom K retired Loss Mitigation in order in the top of the fifth, and Shady Characters would draw a bit closer in the bottom of the inning. For the second consecutive inning, Erich led off with a solo homer, and the score was 4-3. Tom K followed with a double, but when Stove, the next batter, singled, Tom K was not only caught in between second and third, but Stove was caught in between first and second. The double play ended the inning, stranding two runners, and Loss Mitigation led by a run heading into the sixth.

Nate was strong on the mound and kept the Shady Characters bats in check, allowing only three runs in five innings.

Loss Mitigation would get one additional insurance run in the top of the sixth. Bob singled, and two batters later, Nate drove him in with an RBI triple that extended the Loss Mitigation lead to 5-3. Tom K retired Norris to end the inning, and Shady Characters were behind by two runs.

Presented with a rare save opportunity, Loss Mitigation brought Bob from the bullpen to relieve Nate in the bottom of the sixth. He was effective, retiring Dylan and Nate in order to end the game, giving Loss Mitigation the 5-3 victory.

The win moved Loss Mitigation to 5-3 on the season, and the loss dropped Shady Characters to 4-4.

Josh Leads Porkswords to 8-7 Win Over Cheap Goats, Miller Falls to Injury

Miller, the 2017 EWL Pitch King with Questionable Outfit, went 2-for-4 with an RBI sac fly, double, homer, and three RBI before leaving the game with a season-ending injury.

Despite losing their team captain, Miller, to what later was diagnosed as the worst injury in the history of the EWL, the Porkswords beat Cheap Goats 8-7 led by Josh, who went 6-for-6 with two home runs. Miller came up lame after making an approach toward a fly ball in foul territory and immediately left the game. He was later diagnosed with a ruptured achilles tendon, the a season-ending injury that became the most severe wiffle injury the league has seen. Josh’s six hits and Steve’s three extra-base hits helped the Porkswords pick up a narrow victory, moving them closer to the rest of the league in the EWL standings.

Miller started on the mound for the Porkswords, and the first batter he faced, Jordan, hit a towering solo homer to left-center, putting Cheap Goats ahead 1-0. Miller retired the next two batters, Joey and Christian, to end the inning.

Miller retired Joey and Christian to end the inning, and the Porkswords trailed by four.

Josh followed with a solo shot, and the back-to-back homers had cut the score to 4-2. Steve then tripled, and he scored on Miller’s sac fly, and the score was 4-3. Adam tripled, and Josh drove him in with an RBI single that tied the game at 4-4. Christian finally escaped the inning by retiring Steve for the second out, and the Porkswords had scored four runs to even the game at 4-4.

Cheap Goats pulled ahead again in the top of the third. Dinger doubled, and two batters later, Jordan drove him in with an RBI single that made the score 5-4. Joey then singled, putting runner on first and second with one out. Christian singled to right, scoring Dinger, and Cheap Goats led 6-4. Miller retired Dinger to end the inning, and the Porkswords trailed by two runs.

Once again, the Porkswords would fight back in the bottom of the third. Miller provided his own run support, leading off the inning with a solo homer to right-center which made the score 6-5. Two batters later, with one out, Josh homered for the second time in the game, and his solo shot tied the game at 6-6. Steve followed with a double, but Christian escaped further damage, retiring Miller to end the inning with the game tied at 6-6.

Dinger came to the plate and hit a seemingly meaningless fly ball in foul territory along the third base line. As Miller came off the mound to approach the ball, he felt a snap, and immediately left the game. After visiting Shadyside hospital, he was later diagnosed with a ruptured achilles tendon, ending his season.

After Miller’s injury, the Porkswords rallied, picking up Red Dick, who had played with them earlier in the season. Adam took the mound, and he retired Dinger for the first out of the inning. Bob followed with a single, putting runners on the corners with one out. Jordan doubled, scoring Christian to make the score 8-7. Bob attempted to score on the play, but was caught out in between third and home, ending the inning, and the Porkswords maintained a one-run lead.

Josh singled to start the bottom of the fifth, his sixth consecutive hit. But the Porkswords couldn’t add any insurance runs, as Christian retired the next two batters to strand the runner, and Cheap Goats trailed by a run heading into the sixth.

Adam remained in the game to close things out, and he made quick work of Cheap Goats in the top of the sixth. Joey grounded out to the mound, and Christian flew out to right-center, ending the game and giving the Porkswords an 8-7 victory.

The win moved the Porkswords to 3-5 on the season, and the loss dropped Cheap Goats to 4-4.
