Big Eighth Inning Carries Cheap Goats to 12-8 Extra-Innings Win over Porkswords

Jordan had five hits, including three homers, to help lead Cheap Goats to their second extra-innings win of the 2018 season

After trailing 8-4 in the fifth, Cheap Goats tied things up to force extra innings, and pulled away with four runs in the top of the eighth to beat the Porkswords 12-8. Jordan had three homers in the game to lead Cheap Goats, and Joey’s solo homer in the top of the eighth put the Goats ahead for good. Dinger also had three home runs and pitched the complete game win as Cheap Goats became the first team in EWL history to play in and win back-to-back games that were eight innings or longer.

Josh started on the mound for the Porkswords, and he retired the side in order in the top of the first. He would get run support from his offense in the bottom half of the inning.

Dinger started for Cheap Goats, and Josh led off the bottom of the first with a double. Miller followed with an RBI double that made the score 1-0. Two batters later, Adam, making his 2018 debut, hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat of the season, putting the Porkswords ahead 3-0.

Cheap Goats bounced back in the top of the second. Christian started the inning with a single, and Dinger drove him in with a two-run shot to left-center, making the score 3-2. Two batters later, Jordan hit a one-out solo homer to tie the game at 3-3.

The Porkswords pulled ahead again in the bottom of the second when John hit a one-out solo homer, and the score was 4-3. Adam then doubled, and Josh drove him in with an RBI double that extended the Porkswords lead to 5-3.

With one out in the top of the third, Dinger homered for the second time in as many at-bats, cutting the deficit to 5-4. Bob then singled for his first career hit in the EWL, and Jordan followed, putting runners on first and second. But Josh cracked down, retiring Joey to strand both runners and end the inning with the Porkswords holding a one-run lead.

John started the bottom of the third with a single, and Josh drove him in with his third double of the game, making the score 6-4.

Dinger hit a one-out single in the top of the fourth, but Josh avoided further damage, retiring Bob to end the inning.

The Porkswords continued to score in the bottom of the fourth. John led off the inning with a single, and Adam drove him in with his second two-run homer of the game, and the Porkswords led 8-4. Josh followed with a single, as did Miller, and the Porkswords had runners on the corners with no outs. Dinger was up against the wall, but he avoided a catastrophic inning, retiring John and Adam, who both flew out to end the inning with the score 8-4.

Cheap Goats came back firing in the top of the fifth, eventually tying the score. Jordan led off the inning with his second homer of the game, and the score was 8-5. Christian later doubled with one out, and Dinger drove him in with his third home run of the game, cutting the deficit to 8-7. Bob followed with his first career home run, and the back-to-back jacks had drawn Cheap Goats even with the Porkswords at 8-8. Josh retired Jordan to end the inning, and the Porkswords had squandered a four run lead.

Dinger retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth, and Cheap Goats had a chance to take their first lead of the game in the top of the sixth. But Josh got back in track, sending Joey and Christian down consecutively, and the Porkswords could walk off with a win in the bottom of the sixth.

Dinger continued to pitch effectively, and the Porkswords couldn’t pull of the dramatic win. Dinger retired John and Adam, and the game would go to extra innings.

Bob singled with one out in the top of the seventh, but Cheap Goats couldn’t capitalize. Josh retired Jordan to strand the runner and end the inning, giving the Porkswords another chance.

Dinger continued to roll in the bottom of the seventh, retiring the seventh and eighth consecutive batters that he had faced, sending the game to the eighth.

After two scoreless innings, Cheap Goats blew the doors open in the top of the eighth. Joey led off the inning with a solo homer, giving Cheap Goats their first lead, 9-8. Two batters later, Dinger singled, and Bob singled to put runners on the corners. Jordan followed with a three-run blast, his third home run of the game, and Cheap Goats had taken a 12-8 lead. Josh retired Joey to end the inning, and the Porkswords would have a mountain to climb to force additional innings.

The Porkswords finally got a hit, their first since the fifth inning, when John led off the bottom of the eighth with a single. The rally would stop there, however, as Dinger retired Adam and Josh to strand the runner, ending the inning and the game. Cheap Goats put together two four-run innings to beat the Porkswords, and after two consecutive eight-inning wins, Cheap Goats had moved above .500 on the season.

The win moved Cheap Goats to 3-2, and the loss dropped the Porkswords to 1-4.

Loss Mitigation Rally in Sixth Inning to Top Shady Characters 7-6

Nate gave Loss Mitigation their first lead with a three-run homer in the fourth. He put them ahead for good with an RBI double in the top of the sixth.

Loss Mitigation came from behind multiple times in a 7-6 win in week 3, as Shady Characters just couldn’t put them away. After trailing 4-0 early, Loss Mitigation took the lead mid-game, then lost it, then pulled back ahead in the top of the sixth, when Bob tied the game with a solo homer, and Nate’s RBI double sealed the victory. The win gave Loss Mitigaton a winning record for the first time in 2018.

Tom K took the mound for Shady Characters, and after allowing a one-out double to Mike in the top of the first, he retired Nate to strand the runner, ending the inning.

Norris started for Loss Mitigation, and Shady Characters got to him early, taking a lead in the bottom of the first. Erich led off the game with his first career lead off homer, making the score 1-0. Two batters later, Tom W also homered, and Shady Characters led 2-0. Tom K followed with a single, and Erich’s second homer of the inning, a two-run shot to right-center, put Shady Characters ahead 4-0. Norris retired Dylan to end the inning, and Loss Mitigation trailed by four runs.

Loss Mitigation got on the board in the top of the second. Norris led off with a single, and he moved from first to third on Bob’s double. With runners on second and third and no outs, Mike flew out to center, but Norris tagged and scored on the play, and the sacrifice fly cut the score to 4-1. Nate then singled, scoring Bob, and Loss Mitigation trailed 4-2. Tom K retired Norris to end the inning.

Tom W led off the bottom of the second with a single, but Norris avoided further damage, retiring Tom K and Erich to end the inning, and the score remained 4-2.

Bob had four hits in the game, including a single, two doubles, and the late, game-tying homer.

Tom K allowed a one-out single to Mike in the top of the third, but no runs. Norris rolled through the bottom of the third in order, and the score was 4-2 through three innings.

Loss Mitigation would take the lead for the first time in the game in the top of the fourth. Norris singled to start the inning, and Bob followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Two batters later, Nate hit a three-run homer, giving Loss Mitigation a 5-4 lead. Tom K retired Norris to end the inning, and Shady Characters trailed by a run.

It wouldn’t take long for Shady Characters to reclaim the lead. Tom K started the bottom of the fourth with a double, and Erich drove him in with his third homer of the game. The two-run shot put Shady Characters ahead 6-5. Norris retired Dylan and Tom W to end the inning, and Shady Characters led by a run.

Erich led Shady Characters, hitting two homers in the first inning and a third bomb in the fourth. He drove in five of the six Shady Characters’ runs.

Bob started the top of the fifth with a double, but was caught out trying to extend the hit into a triple. Mike then singled, but Tom K got out of the inning, retiring Nate to strand the runner, and the score remained 6-5.

Norris retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth, and Loss Mitigation trailed 6-5 heading into their final at-bat.

Tom K retired Norris for the first out in the top of the sixth, and Shady Characters were one out way from victory. Bob came to the plate having reached base safely in three of five at-bats, but having been kept in the park after hitting three homers in his previous game. Tom K’s luck ran out, as Bob crunched a solo homer to right, tying the game at 6-6. Mike followed with a double, putting the go-ahead run in scoring position. Nate came through for the second time in the game for Loss Mitigation, once again giving them a lead. His one-out RBI double scored Mike from second, and Loss Mitigation led 7-6. Tom K retired Norris to end the inning, but after being one out away from victory, Shady Characters trailed Loss Mitigation by a run heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Norris made quick work of Shady Characters in the final frame, retiring Dylan and Tom W in order, giving Loss Mitigation a 7-6 win.

The win moved Loss Mitigation to 3-2 on the season, and with the loss, Shady Characters dropped to 3-2.

Loss Mitigation Powers Past Porkswords, Cruise to 18-6 Win

Bob’s bat came alive against the Porkswords, as he hit three homers, and registered seven total hits and eight RBI, in Loss Mitigation’s win

Loss Mitigation, led by Bob, who had seven hits and three homers, pulled to .500 on the season after rolling to an 18-6 win over the Porkswords in a game that was finished in week 3 after being postponed due to darkness in week 2. Loss Mitigation led 10-4 when the game was postponed, and they added eight more runs over the final three innings to seal the victory.

Nate took the mound for Loss Mitigation, and he fell behind early when Josh led off the game with a solo homer, making the score 1-0. Nate retired the next two batters, and his offense would give him some run support in the bottom of the first.

Dustin started for the Porkswords, and he was hit hard early. Bob led off the game with a double, and he managed to score from second on Mike’s sacrifice fly, tying the game at 1-1. Nate then doubled, and he scored on a Norris RBI double that put Loss Mitigation ahead 2-1. Bob followed with a two-run homer, and Loss Mitigation led 4-1. Mike also homered, and the back-to-back homers gave Loss Mitigation a 5-1 lead. Dustin finally escaped the inning by striking out Nate, and the Porkswords trailed by four runs.

Nate retired the side in order in the top of the second, and Dustin matched him in the bottom half of the inning.

Nate connects on one of his four hits in the game. He finished with two doubles, four RBI, and also earned the complete game win on the mound.

The Porkswords rallied in the top of the third, cutting into the deficit. Josh led off the inning with his second homer of the game, making the score 5-2. Dustin then tripled, and he scored when Miller grounded out for the first out of the inning. John then homered, and the Porkswords had cut the score to 5-4. Nate retired Steve, ending the inning with a one-run lead.

Loss Mitigation immediately made up for the runs, taking another commanding lead in the bottom of the third. Norris doubled with one out, and Bob drove him in with his second two-run blast of the game, putting Loss Mitigation ahead 7-4. Mike then tripled, and Nate drove him in with an RBI double that extended the lead to 8-4. Norris hit an RBI single, scoring Nate from second, and the score was 9-4. Bob drove in another run, and his RBI single scored Norris from first to make the score 10-4. Mike followed with a double, putting runners on second and third, but Dustin escaped the inning, retiring Nate to strand both runners, and the Porkswords trailed by six.

At this point, the game was called due to darkness, and the game was resumed in week 3. Steve and Dustin were out for week 3, and Adam R made his season debut with the Porkswords.

When action picked up in the top of the fourth, the Porkswords once again cut into the Loss Mitigation lead. Josh led off the inning with a single, and Miller drove him in with a two-run homer, making the score 10-6. John followed with a double, and he moved to third on Adam’s single, putting two runners in scoring position with no outs. Nate, who remained on the mound after the game was resumed, managed to escape further damage, retiring Josh and Miller to strand both runners. Nate had ended the rally, and Loss Mitigation led by four.

Norris crosses home plate for one of the six runs he scored in the game. He had a career day, going 7-for-8 with four singles, two doubles, a homer, and four RBI.

Loss Mitigation would pull away in the bottom of the fourth. Norris led off the inning with a single, and Bob followed with his third two-run homer of the game, putting Loss Mitigation ahead 12-6. Mike then doubled, and he scored on Nate’s RBI single that extended the lead to 13-6. Norris singled to put runners on the corners, and Bob drove in Nate with an RBI single that made the score 14-6. Two batters later, Nate cleared the bases with a one-out RBI single, and Loss Mitigation led 16-6. Norris then singled to once again put runners on the corners, but John, who had taken the mound after the delay, retired Bob to strand two runners and end the inning.

Nate allowed a one-out triple to Adam in the top of the fifth, but escaped the inning unscathed, retiring Josh to strand the runner and end the inning.

Loss Mitigation added to additional insurance runs off Miller, who relieved John in the bottom of the fifth. Mike doubled to lead off, and two batters later, Norris hit a two-run homer, making the score 18-6.

The Porkswords barely threatened in the top of the sixth. John singled with one out, but Nate ended things there, retiring Adam to strand the runner, ending the inning and the game.

The win moved Loss Mitigation to 2-2 on the season, and the loss dropped the Porkswords to 1-3.

Mike of Loss Mitigation Doubles Up: Wins PBR Wiffler of the Week for Second Consecutive Week

Mike, seen here eating a bag of Doritos, was named Pabst Blue Ribbon Wiffler of the Week for the second consecutive week.

Mike of Loss Mitigation became the third player in league history to be named Pabst Blue Ribbon Wiffler of the Week for both of the first two weeks of the regular season. He joins Guthrie, who was named Wiffler of the Week for week 1 and week 2 in 2016, and Bob, who accomplished the feat in 2014.

Mike led Loss Mitigation to two wins in week 2, going 8-for-11 with with two triples and an incredible six homers, maintaining his place atop the EWL League Leaders. His bat was nearly unstoppable as he crushed opposing pitchers inning after inning. He also continued to dominate defensively, coming through with big plays in the field, recording critical putouts for Loss Mitigation.

This is Mike’s ninth PBR Wiffler of the Week Award. He was named Wiffer of the Week in weeks two and three of the 2013 season, the only time he has previously won in consecutive weeks.

Christian’s Walk-Off Homer in Extra Innings Caps Cheap Goats’ Incredible 11-10 Win Over Shady Characters

Down to their final out with the tying run on base, Christian hit a two-run walk-off home run to give Cheap Goats a highly improbable 11-10 win that will go down in the annals of EWL history.

Trailing by a run and down to their final out, Cheap Goats came from behind in remarkable fashion, as Christian’s two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the 8th inning ended the best game of the 2018 EWL season thus far. As darkness began to fall on the Wiffle Diamond, both teams kept battling, and Cheap Goats ultimately prevailed 11-10 in extra innings, handing Shady Characters their first loss the year.

With Dinger out for week 2, Andrew made his first career start for Cheap Goats, and he fell behind early. Tom W led off the game with a single, and he scored from first on a Tom K RBI single that put Shady Characters ahead 1-0. Andrew retired the next two batters to end the inning.

Tom K made his second consecutive start for Shady Characters, and he cruised through the bottom of the first, retiring Jordan and Joey in order.

Shady Characters would add to their lead in the top of the second. Tom W once again singled to start the inning, and he moved from first to third on another Tom K single. With runners on the corners, Dylan grounded out, but Tom W scored on the play, and Shady Characters led 2-0.

Tom K continued to roll in the bottom of the second, again retiring the side in order to maintain a two-run lead.

Andrew send Tom W and Tom K down consecutively in the top of the third, and Cheap Goats would pull ahead in the bottom of the third.

With Tom K at his innings limit for week 2, Shady Characters turned to Dylan from the bullpen, and he retired the first batter he faced, Jordan. With one out, Joey hit a solo homer to deep left, cutting the score to 2-1. Andrew followed with a solo shot, and the back-to-back home runs tied the game at 2-2. Christian then doubled, and Jordan drove him in with a two-run homer to left, putting Cheap Goats ahead 4-2. Dylan had given up four runs and three home runs, and Shady Characters removed him from the mound, and Tom W made his first career pitching appearance in relief. He allowed a single to Joey, but then retired Andrew for the second out, ending the inning with the score 4-2.

Cheap Goats had taken the lead, but it wouldn’t last long, as Shady Characters bounced back immediately. Cheap Goats inserted Christian into the game, and he was hit hard. The first batter he faced, Dylan, launched a solo homer to center, narrowing the deficit to 4-3. Erich followed with a double, and he scored from second on Tom W’s RBI double, tying the game at 4-4. Two batters later, Dylan crushed his second homer of the inning, a two-run blast that put Shady Characters ahead 6-4. Erich followed with a solo homer, and the back-to-back jacks extended the Shady Characters lead to 7-4. Tom W then doubled, and it looked as if Shady Characters would blow the game wide open. Christian buckled down, however, retiring Tom K for the second out of the inning. Shady Characters had scored five runs to take a three-run lead.

Erich went 4-for-7 with a single, two doubles, a home run, and four runs scored, continuing his hot start to the 2018 season.

Tom W retired the Cheap Goats in order in the bottom of the fourth, and the score remained 7-4.

Erich singled with one out in the top of the fifth, and Tom W drove him in with an RBI double, making the score 8-4. Tom K followed with a single, but Tom W was caught out trying to score on the play, ending the inning.

Joey led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer, his second of the game, cutting the Shady Characters lead to 8-5. Cheap Goats couldn’t rally, however, as Tom W retired Andrew and Christian to end the inning.

Cheap Goats returned Andrew to the mound in the top of the sixth. Erich doubled with one out, and for the second consecutive inning, Tom W drove him in, this time with another RBI double. Andrew retired Tom K to end the inning, and Cheap Goats trailed 9-5 heading into their final at-bat.

With their backs against the wall and facing a three game losing streak, Cheap Goats rallied. Jordan started the rally with a solo homer, his second blast of the game, which cut the score to 9-6. Joey then singled, and Andrew followed with another single, putting the tying run at the plate. Christian flew out to right, and Tom W was one out away from securing the win. Jordan came to the plate and saved the day for Cheap Goats. He crushed a three-run homer to left, his second of the inning and third of the game, tying the game at 9-9. Tom W then had to face Joey, who had reached base safely in his past four at-bats. Joey couldn’t come through, however, and flew out to center to end the inning. Cheap Goats had scored four runs, three with one out, to tie the game and force extra innings.

Jordan hit three homers, including an epic three-run blast that tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, forcing extra innings.

Andrew remained on the mound for Cheap Goats, and he retired Shady Characters in order in the top of the 7th.

Christian singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh, putting the winning run on base, but Cheap Goats couldn’t capitalize. Jordan, who had carried Cheap Goats back into the game, couldn’t come through this time, as Tom W got him to fly out to center, ending the inning.

Andrew went 3-for-7 with two singles and a home run. He also scored three runs and drove one in.

Shady Characters would pull ahead again in the top of the 8th. Tom W, who had doubled in his last four at-bats, started the inning with a solo homer to left-center, and Shady Characters took the lead, 10-9. Andrew retired the next two batters, Tom K and Dylan, ending the inning, and Cheap Goats once again had their backs against the wall.

Joey started the inning, and he hit a high fly ball to right-center that was caught for the first out of the inning. Down to their last out, Cheap Goats stayed alive when Andrew singled, putting the tying run on base. Christian came to the plate with hopes to extend the game. Instead, he ended it, when he launched a towering blast to right field, which cleared the fence. The two-run walk-off homer ended the extra innings instant classic between Cheap Goats and Shady Characters, giving Cheap Goats an 11-10 victory.

The win moved Cheap Goats to 2-2 on the season, and Shady Characters dropped to 3-1.
