Chris Scatters Two Hits in 6-1 Victory Over Pumice on Slow!

The Dentists celebrate at home after a Marr solo homer in a 6-1 win over Pumice on Slow!

Pumice on Slow! managed only two hits, not scoring until their final at-bat, as 4 out of 5 Dentists cruised to a 6-1 win.

Chris, who has been mowing through EWL lineups in 2011, started on the mound for the Dentists and picked up where he left off in week 7. He struck out John to start the game, the retired Gaurav to end the first.

John, who has had two prior relief appearances for Pumice!, made his first career start against the Dentists in week 8. He retired Ron and Chris in order in the bottom of the first, and the score was 0-0 through one inning.

Chris kept his momentum, retiring Mo Vaughn and John in the second.

John got Spads to fly out to start the inning, but the Dentists struck first in the bottom of the second, as Marr hit a one out solo homer, making the score 1-0. Ron singled with out out, but was stranded at first when Chris grounded out to end the inning.

Gaurav and Mo Vaughn each grounded out in the top of the third, and Chris was perfect through three innings.

The Dentists went to work in the bottom of the third, as Spads led off the inning with a single. He moved to second when Marr followed with a single of his own. With no outs and two runners on, Ron grounded out to center field, but Spads scored from second on the play extending the score to 2-0. Marr advanced to second, but was stranded in scoring position when Chris grounded out to end the third.

Up two runs, Chris remained perfect in the top of the fourth, retiring John and Gaurav in order.

Spads led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple, and scored when Marr hit a single, making the score 3-0. Marr advanced to second on a Ron groundout, but couldn’t advance further, as John retired Chris to end the fourth.

Chris retired Vaughn to start the fifth, but John broke up the perfect game attempt by hitting a single with one out. Chris tied the record for carrying a perfect game furthest into a game, at 4.5 innings. The hit ruined the no-hitter, but Chris retired Gaurav to end the inning and maintain the shutout through five innings.

Spads started the bottom of the fifth with a double and was a homer away from the cycle. Marr grounded out for the first out of the inning, but Spads scored from second on the play, making the score 4-0. With one out, Ron singled, and scored when Chris followed with a two-run bomb, extending the Dentists’ lead to 6-0. Approaching the cycle, Spads came to the plate needing a homer, but struck out to end the inning.

Up six runs, Chris gave up a solo homer to Vaughn to lead off the top of the sixth, making the score 6-1 and foiling his shutout attempt. But he retired John and Gaurav in order to end the game, moving to 6-0 on the mound for the year.

Jones Makes EWL Debut, Holds Off Pumice! in 7-4 Caucasians Win

The Caucasians celebrate at home after Jones first career homer, Gaurav turns to the mound in disgust

T.C. Jones started on the mound for the Caucasian Vaginas in the second game of week 8, making his EWL debut, and helped the Caucasians get their third straight win over Pumice!

Things didn’t start out good for Jones, as he gave up solo bombs to John and Mo Vaughn (filling in due to an extremely depleted Pumice! roster) to begin the game. The back-to-back homers put Pumice! up 2-0 early with no outs. Gaurav followed the home runs with a single, but John grounded out to Morrison, who turned a double play retiring John at second and ending the top of the first.

Morrison led off for the Caucasians in the bottom of the first and grounded out. Guthrie doubled, and was held at first on a Jones pop fly that fell in for a single. But the Caucasians stranded runners at first and second when Higgins grounded out to left field for the second out of the inning.

Vaughn grounded out to lead off the top of the second for Pumice!, and Gaurav singled with one out. But Jones stranded the runner, retiring John by groundout for the second out of the inning.

Morrison doubled to start the bottom of the second, and moved to third when Guthrie followed with a double of his own. Jones had his first legitimate RBI chance, but was fanned by Gaurav for the first out of the inning. Gaurav couldn’t get out of the jam unscathed though, as Higgins hit a clutch one-out triple, unloading the bases and scoring two runs to tie the game at 2. The Caucasians couldn’t drive in the go-ahead run, as Morrison was retired by groundout to center field ending the inning.

With the game tied at 2-2, Jones got into a groove. He retired the side in order in the top of the third.

The tie was broken in the bottom of the third when Guthrie led off the inning with a solo homer, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Caucasians. After a Jones single, Higgins flew out for the first out of the inning. But Morrison extended the Caucasian lead with a two-run blast, putting the Vaginas ahead 5-2. Guthrie flew out to end the third but the Caucasians now held a three run lead.

Still feeling it, Jones retired the side in order again in the top of the fourth, making four straight retired batters.

He then extended his groove to the plate, hitting a solo bomb to lead off the bottom of the fourth, moving the score to 6-2. Gaurav then struck out Higgins for the first out of the inning and retired Morrison to end the threat.

Gaurav singled to end Jones consecutive retired batters streak, and moved into scoring position on a John groundout. But Pumice! couldn’t plate a runner, as Vaughn flew out to deep center field.

With the score 6-2, Guthrie led off the bottom of the fifth with his second home run of the game, pushing the Caucasians’ lead to 5 runs. Gaurav retired Jones and Higgins to end the fifth, and Pumice! would need to score five runs in the top of the sixth to extend the game.

Gaurav grounded out to left to start the top of the sixth, but it looked as if Pumice! would rally. John singled with one out, and Vaughn hit his second homer of the day, cutting the Pumice! deficit to 7-4. The rally ended there, however, as Gaurav grounded out for the second out of the inning, ending the game, giving the Caucasians and Jones the victory.

– Jones went 3-5 with a homer, and pitched 7 innings giving up 4 ER on 7 hits in his debut, getting the win
– Guthrie led the way at the plate for the Caucasians, going 4-5 with 2 doubles, 2 homers, and 2 RBI

– 4 runs were the most Pumice! had scored since week 4
– the loss was Pumice on Slow’s 7th consecutive

Dinger’s Walk-Off Home Run Gives Fish Sticks 5-3 Extra Inning Win Over Pumice!

Dinger, who gave up three runs on only three hits, delivers to Gaurav of Pumice!

Dinger gave up only three hits on the mound, and hit the first walk-off home run in league history, as the Fish Sticks topped Pumice on Slow! 5-3 in 7 innings.

Dinger retired John and Gaurav in order in the top of the first, and was the first batter for the Sticks in the bottom of the first. Pumice on Slow! sent Gaurav to the mound for his second start of the day. He retired Dinger to start the game, and after giving up a single to Joey, Gaurav retired Blose to end the first.

Pumice! obtained Jeff Treadway as a fourth player for their second week 7 game, as usual starters Brad and Holly were on their honey moon. Dinger retired Luke and Treadway in order in the top of the second. Gaurav matched Dinger in the bottom half of the inning, getting Vassallo and Dinger to fly out.

John and Gaurav were both retired by groundouts in the top of the third, and with Gaurav having reached the 8 inning pitching limit for the day, John took the mound for Pumice! Joey led off the bottom of the third with a single. He advanced to third on a groundout by Blose, but he was stranded in scoring position when Vassallo flew out to left to end the third inning.

Dinger retired Luke and Treadway in order in the top of the fourth, and had a perfect game in tact through four innings. John gave up a single to Dinger to lead off the bottom of the fourth, but retired Joey and Blose with a groundout and flyout to the mound to end the inning.

With the game still tied at zero, John broke up the perfect game when he led off the top of the fifth with a solo bomb to left field, making the score 1-0. Pumice! didn’t wait long to add to their lead, as Gaurav followed with a solo shot to right field, making back-to-back homers and pushing the lead to two runs. Dinger retired Luke, who grounded out to left field, for the first out of the inning, but Treadway extended the Pumice! lead to three runs when he hit the third home run of the inning, a solo homer to center. Dinger retired John to end the top of the fifth, having given up three runs in the frame.

Down three, Vassallo grounded out to start the bottom of the fifth. Dinger singled, and the next batter, Joey, cut the score to 3-2 when he hit a towering two-run home run to left field. Blose flew out to end the fifth, and the Sticks deficit was cut to a single run.

Dinger retired Gaurav and Luke in order in the top of the sixth, as both grounded out to left field. Needing a run to extend the game, Vassallo led off the bottom of the sixth with a clutch solo homer, his second of the day, tying the game at 3. One run away from victory, the Sticks couldn’t end the game, as John settled down on the mound and retired Dinger and Joey in order to send the game to extra innings.

In the top of the seventh, Dinger retired Treadway and John in order. John retired the first batter in the bottom of the seventh, Blose, by getting him to fly out to right field. Vassallo followed with a one-out double, putting the winning run on second base. After taking several pitches, Dinger clubbed a two-run homer to left field, scoring Vassallo and himself, the first walk-off home run in league history. The blast gave the Fish Sticks a 5-3 win, and moved them a game ahead of the Dentists for second place in the league standings.

– Dinger came the closest anyone in the league has come so far to a perfect game, retiring the first eight batters of the game for 4 perfect innings
– Dinger also hit the first walk-off home run in league history
– Pumice on Slow! had no base runners the entire game, scoring three runs on three solo home runs
– Blose went hitless for the first time in 14 games this season
– Joey now holds the league’s longest hitting streak, at 14 games
– Morrison and Ron are tied with the league’s second longest hitting streak, at 12 games

Guthrie Scatters Five Hits for Caucasians En Route to 3-0 Shutout of Pumice on Slow!

Guthrie delivers a pitch to Luke of Pumice on Slow! in his 3-0 complete game shutout

After missing week 6, Guthrie returned with a vengeance in week 7, retiring eight of the final nine Pumice! batters in a 3-0 complete game shutout.

Guthrie battled Pumice! ace Gaurav, who retired Guthrie to start the game. But the game’s second batter, Morrison, belted a solo homer with one out to put the Caucasians up 1-0 in the top of the first. Jeff Blauser, playing for the Caucasians because they fielded only a two-man roster for week 7, singled following the home run. But Gaurav stranded Blauser at first, ending the inning with only one run in the books.

John was retired to start the bottom of the first, but Gaurav followed with a single in which he pushed the ball directly into a hole in right field. Unfortunately for Pumice! he was stranded at first when Luke grounded out to left to end the inning.

Gaurav retired both Vaginas batters in order in the top of the second, and Pumice! started a rally in the bottom of the second. John led off the inning with a single and moved to second when Gaurav hit another seeing-eye single to right. With two men on, Luke grounded out to Morrison in left, but put two runners in scoring position with one out. But Guthrie got John to fly out to left field, ending the threat as Pumice! failed to plate either of the two base runners.

Guthrie was retired to start the top of the third, and after a Morrison single with one out, Blauser flew out to the mound for the second out of the inning. Gaurav led off the bottom of the third with his third single in as many at-bats, but didn’t advance past first as Guthrie retired Luke and John to end the third.

Up 1-0, Guthrie doubled to start the top of the fourth. The next batter, Morrison, singled, but Guthrie was held at second. Blauser came up with men on first and second and no outs. One of the strangest plays in league history followed. Blauser hit a fly ball which fell into play for a single, but both Guthrie and Morrison were caught in between bases as Pumice! got Gaurav the ball on the mound. The result was a double play, as the Caucasians went 3 for 3 in the inning as a team, but scored no runs and recorded two outs.

Pumice! couldn’t capitalize on the big defensive play, however, as Guthrie retired Gaurav and Luke in order with groundouts in the bottom of the fourth.

Gaurav got Guthrie to fly out to left to lead off the top of the fifth. Morrison doubled with one out, but Gaurav ended the inning by getting Blauser to fly out to center field. With the score still 1-0, John and Gaurav were retired in order in the bottom of the fifth.

Guthrie flew out to the pitcher’s mound for the first out of the sixth, and Morrison followed with his third single of the day. With one out, Blauser hit a two-run homer to center field, putting the Caucasians up 3-0. Guthrie hit his second double of the game with one out following the home run, but he was stranded at second when Morrison flew out to deep left field.

Pumice! needed three runs to extend the game, but Luke was fanned to lead off the final frame. John singled to keep hope alive, but Gaurav flew out to the pitcher’s mound to end the game and give the Caucasians a 3-0 victory.

Game Notes:
– Guthrie tied a league record for doubles in a game, with 2
– This was the first game of the season in which a team only fielded two players

Record Setting Offensive Performance by Dinger Sends Fish Sticks past Pumice 8-2

Dinger went 7 for 8 with 3 home runs and 6 RBI in an 8-2 Fish Sticks win

Dinger set personal bests and broke or tied multiple league records at the plate, and earned a pitching victory, as he carried the Fish Sticks to an 8-2 win over Pumice on Slow!

Pumice on Slow! started Holly on the mound, who was hit hard by the Sticks in her first start of the season. Since then, however, she had a solid performance against the Caucasians, nearly shutting them out. She got off to a good start against the Gay Fish in week 6, retiring Dinger and Joey in order in the top of the first.

Things looked up for Pumice in the bottom of the first, when Gaurav hit a lead-off home run, only the third in league history. Up 1-0, Brad singled with no outs to put a runner on first. Holly stepped to the plate next, and hit a sharp grounder to left. Blose retired her, then pegged Brad out in his attempt to advance to second, recording a double play to end the inning.

Down a run, Blose led off the top of the second with a solo homer, tying the game at 1 apiece. The tie didn’t last long, as Dinger made back-to-back homers with a solo shot of his own, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Sticks. Holly got out of the inning without further damage, however, retiring Joey and Blose.

John singled to lead off the bottom of the second, but was stranded on base as Gaurav and Brad were retired to end the inning.

Dinger singled to lead off the top of the third, and after Joey flew out, Blose singled to put runners on the corners with one out. With two men on, Dinger hit his second blast in as many at-bats, a three run homer, making the score 5-1. With one out and no one on, Joey tripled, but was stranded at third when Blose flew out to right field to end the rally.

Holly led off the bottom of the third by flying out to center, and John followed with a single, his second of the game. Gaurav couldn’t advance him though, as he grounded out to left to end the third.

Up four, Dinger started the top of the fourth with a triple. Joey followed with a double, but Pumice managed to keep Dinger from scoring by getting the ball to the mound before he crossed home, recording the first out of the inning and keeping the score at 5-1. With a runner on second, Blose tripled, driving in a run and extending the Fish Sticks lead to five runs. Dinger followed with a single, plating Blose, and moving the score to 7-1. Joey flew out with Blose on first, stranding him and ending the top of the fourth.

Brad led off the bottom of the fourth with a single, bringing Holly to the plate. She grounded out to center, and for the second time in the game, Brad was tagged out trying to advance to second, resulting in the second double play of the game, and ending the inning.

Blose grounded out to start the top of the fifth, and after a Dinger single, Holly retired Joey when he flew out to the mound to end the inning. Dinger retired John and Gaurav in order in the bottom of the fifth to send the game to the sixth with the score 7-1.

Holly retired Blose when he flew out to center to start the top of the sixth, but Dinger followed with a solo homer, his seventh hit and third home run of the game, making the score 8-1. Holly ended the inning when Joey flew out to her at the mound.

Down seven runs, Brad led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer, his third hit of the game. However, Pumice couldn’t extend the rally, as Holly and John each grounded out to end the game, sending them to their fourth consecutive defeat.

– The Fish Sticks set a single-game team record for triples with 3
