Questionable Outfit took an early lead against the Ham Slams and rode Mike’s arm and solid defense to an easy 5-1 win.
Josh started the game pitching for the Ham Slams, and after retiring Tom, the first batter, Reilly crushed a solo homer to deep left field, putting Questionable Outfit up 1-0 early.
Questionable Outfit sent Mike to the mound, and after giving up a single to the Ham Slams leadoff hitter, Anthony, his defense was able to turn a double play when Josh grounded out to the mound.
Mike would get all the run support he needed in the top of the second, when Questionable Outfit got out their bats. Bob led off the inning with a double and scored from second when Tom grounded out to deep left field. Up 2-0, Reilly and Mike each singled to put runners on first and second with one out. Bob stepped to the plate and blasted a three-run bomb to right field, giving Questionable Outfit a 5-0 lead. Josh retired Tom, the next batter, to end the inning, but the damage was done.
Mike continued to roll in the bottom of the second. Evan singled with one out, but Mike stranded him at first, getting Charlie to ground out to right.
Questionable Outfit nearly added to their lead in the top of the third, but were unable to capitalize on multiple base runners. After Reilly flew out to left to start the inning, Mike and Bob each singled, putting runners at the corners with one out. But Josh buckled down, getting Tom to fly out to center, stranding both runners.
The Ham Slams finally got on the board in the bottom of the third. Anthony led off the inning with a double, and blazed around the bases to score from second when Josh grounded out to Tom in left field. Mike retired the next batter, Steve, to end the inning with the score 5-1.
Reilly singled to lead off the top of the fourth, but Josh retired Mike and Bob in order to end the inning. Mike cruised through the bottom of the fourth, retiring the side in order.
Josh pitched a perfect top of the fifth, but the Ham Slams couldn’t cut into the deficit in the bottom half of the inning.
Mike singled to lead off the top of the sixth. Bob followed with a deep fly to left, but Steve caught the ball and doubled up Mike who had raced around the bases.
Down to their final at-bat, the Ham Slams looked to rally. Steve led off the inning with a single and moved to second on an Evan single, but Charlie grounded out directly to the mound, allowing Mike to tap the rubber and complete a double play to end the game.
The win moved Questionable Outfit above .500 to 4-3 on the season, while the loss dropped the Ham Slams to 3-4.
