Guacamol-yay Hold Off Late Jack Shack Rally in 7-4 Win

Sean, playing in his second career EWL game, helped lead Guacamol-yay to victory, going 3-for-6 with three extra-base hits and four RBI

Guacamol-yay picked up their first win of the 2020 season in a 7-4 win over defending champions Jack Shack. Jan, Jude, and rookie Sean each had three hits, and Josh K and Jan’s combined effort on the mound kept the Jack Shack bats in check.

Dustin started on the mound for Jack Shack, and he got into trouble early. Jan singled to lead off the game, and two batters later, Jude singled, putting runners on the corners with one out. Sean followed with a bases-clearing triple, and Guacamol-yay led 2-0. Dustin then retired Jan to end the inning.

June went 3-for-5 with two singles and a double

Josh K took the mound for Guacamol-yay, and he cruised through the bottom of the first, retiring Adam and Brian in order.

Dustin matched him in the top of the second, retiring the side in order. Josh K then sent Dustin and Turbo down consecutively in the bottom of the second.

Guacamol-yay would open up a big lead in the top of the third. Sean led off the inning with a double, but was caught out attempting to extend the hit to a triple. Guacamol-yay wasn’t phased, however, and started a one-out rally. Jan doubled, and two batters later, Josh K crushed a two-run blast to left-center, making the score 4-0. June then doubled, and Sean hit Guacamol-yay’s second two-run homer of the inning, extending the lead to 6-0. Dustin retired Jan for the second out of the inning, and Jack Shack trailed by six.

Guacamol-yay turned to Jan, calling him from the bullpen to relieve Josh K. The first batter he faced, Doc, doubled, but Jack Shack couldn’t capitalize. Jan retired Adam and Brian, stranding the runner, and ending the inning.

Dustin fanned Josh K for the first out in the top of the fourth, and after Jude hit a one out single, he retired Sean to end the inning.

Jack Shack got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Dustin provided his own run support, leading off the inning with a solo homer, cutting the score to 6-1. Jack Shack couldn’t mount an extended rally, however, as Jan retired Turbo and Doc to end the inning.

Jack Shack turned to Adam, who relieved Dustin on the mound, and Guacamol-yay got a run back in the top of the fifth. Jan tripled to lead off the inning, and when the next batter, Josh K, grounded out, Jan scored on the play, making the score 7-1. Adam then retired Jude to end the inning, and Jack Shack trailed by six.

Jack Shack cut the Guacamol-yay lead in half in the bottom of the fifth. Adam doubled to lead off the inning, and Brian drove him in with an RBI double, cutting the score to 7-2. Dustin then hit his second homer of the game, a two-run shot that made the score 7-4. Turbo followed with a double, and it looked like Jack Shack was going to have a big inning. Jan buckled down, however, striking out Doc and retiring Adam to strand Turbo at second, ending the inning.

Adam cruised through the top of the sixth, striking out Sean and retiring Jan. Jack Shack trailed by three runs heading into their final at-bat.

Jan remained on the mount to close things out for Guacamol-yay. After retiring Brian, the first batter of the inning, Dustin his a one-out double. Jack Shack couldn’t mount a rally however, as Jan retired Turbo to strand the runner, ending the inning, and giving Guacamol-yay a 7-4 win.

The win moved Guacamol-yay to 1-1 on the season, and the loss dropped Jack Shack to 1-1.

Adam Leads Jack Shack to 9-7 Win Over Shady Characters in Season Opener

Adam led Jack Shack, starting the season with a leadoff homer and going five-for-five in the season opening win.

Adam went 5-for-5 with four runs scored, leading 2019 EWL champions Jack Shack to a 9-7 win over Shady Characters in the first game of the 2020 season. Brian pitched the complete game win, and Dustin and Turbo each contributed three hits for Jack Shack.

Dylan led off the top of the first with a single for Shady Characters, but Brian retired the next two hitters, Tom K and Lucas, ending the inning.

Jack Shack jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first, when the Co-MVP of the 2019 Wiffle Series, Adam, led off the game with a homer, his second career lead-off home run. Shady Characters’ starter, Tom K, fanned Turbo for the first out of the inning, and after giving up a one-out triple to Dustin, retired Brian to strand the runner, and Jack Shack led 1-0.

Brian struck out Sam for the first out of the second inning, then retired Ryan to end the inning with the score 1-0.

Jack Shack extended their lead in the bottom of the second. Doc singled in his first career EWL at-bat, and he moved to second when Adam followed with a single. Turbo then hit an inside-the-park homer, taking advantage of Shady Characters’ fielding and throwing errors, putting Jack Shack ahead 4-0. Tom K avoided further damage, retiring Dustin and Brian to end the inning.

Shady Characters got on the board and cut into the deficit in the top of the third. Brad led off the inning with a single, and two batters later, Tom K hit a one-out single to put two runners on. Lucas then doubled, scoring Brad, and the score was 4-1. Sam followed with a single, clearing the bases and cutting the Jack Shack lead to 4-3. Brian escaped the inning, retiring Ryan for the second out of the inning.

Adam doubled with one out in the bottom of the third, and Turbo drove him in with an RBI single, making the score 5-3. Turbo was caught trying to extend the hit into a double, ending the inning.

Shady Characters drew even in the top of the fourth. Dylan singled with one out, and the next batter, Tom K, hit a two-run shot to right, tying the game at 5-5. Brian then retired Lucas to end the inning.

Jack Shack would take a big lead in the bottom of the fourth. Dustin led off the inning with his second triple of the game, and scored when Brian hit an RBI double, making the score 6-3. Turbo went 3-for-5 with a single, double, and a home run, and drove in five of the nine Jack Shack runs.

Shady Characters put Dylan on the mound in the bottom of the fifth. He struck out Doc for the first out of the inning, and after giving up a one-out double to Adam, he retired Turbo to strand the runner, ending the inning.

Down four, Shady Characters would rally in the top of the sixth. Brad led off the inning with his first career homer, and the solo shot cut the score to 9-6. Dylan then singled, and moved from first to third when Tom K followed with a single. Lucas also singled, scoring Dylan, and the score was 9-7. With no outs and runners on the corners, Sam also singled, the fourth consecutive Shady Characters batter to single. No runners scored on the play, but the bases were loaded with no outs. Brian and Jack Shack were reeling, but he buckled down, retiring Ryan and Brad consecutively, as Shady Characters left the bases loaded, and Jack Shack held on to win 9-7.

The win moved Jack Shack to 1-0 on the season, and the loss dropped Shady Characters to 0-1.

Opening Day 2020 – EWL Season Begins!

Two months later than usual, during a pandemic, with proper precautions in place, the 2020 Ellsworth Wiffleball League season began on Tuesday.

Due to COVID, planned celebrations honoring current and former Wiffle legends did not occur, but Opening Day 2020 began the 10th season on the Wiffle Diamond in Shadyside.

All four teams from 2020, including defending champions Jack Shack, runners-up Shady Characters, Cheap Goats, and Guacamol-yay all return for another campaign on the Wiffle Diamond.

The ceremonial first pitch was thrown by Co-Wiffle Series MVP Adam, of Jack Shack, to EWL commissioner Joey Troupe.

The first pitch was followed by all four week 1 games, under the glorious June sun. Stay tuned for stats and recaps!

The 2019 EWL Season is Underway!

The 2019 Ellsworth Wiffleball League season began on Tuesday, May 7th at the Wiffle Diamond in Shadyside when EWL commissioner Joey threw out the ceremonial first pitch to the league’s longest tenured player, Dinger, of Cheap Goats.

It was a beautiful night on the diamond, as wiffleball returned to Shadyside for the ninth year.

This season marks the largest influx of new players the EWL has ever seen. Defending champions Questionable Outfit/Loss Mitigation have disbanded, and all four of the rosters are loaded with rookies.

The week 1 games were hard fought, and all signs indicate that this season will be another stellar year for wiffleball action. New wiffle legends will be made, and a new champion will be crowned for the first time in six years.

Porkswords Stun Loss Mitigation 9-8 with Walk-Off Win to Conclude Postponed Game

In only his second career at-bat, John hit his first home run in the EWL, a walk-over solo shot that gave the Porkswords a stunning 7-6 win over Loss Mitigation.

Loss Mitigation led 5-3 when their week one game with the Porkswords was resumed, and they had taken an 8-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before the Porkswords mounted a dramatic and stunning rally. The Porkswords scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth, culminating in John’s walk-off solo homer, to win 9-8 and send Loss Mitigation to 0-2 on the season. Every Porksword reached base or drove in a run during the rally, and the first walk-off win of the 2018 EWL season moved the Porkswords to 1-1 in the standings.

Dustin took the mound for the Porkswords when the game started in week one, and he fell behind early. Bob led off the game with a solo homer, putting Loss Mitigation ahead 1-0. Two batters later Nate doubled with one out, but Dustin stranded the runner, retiring Norris to end the inning.

Nate started for Loss Mitigation, and after giving up a lead off single to Josh, he retired the side, and the score remained 1-0.

Mike makes yet another incredible one-handed catch for Loss Mitigation, as his teammates watch in awe.

Mike continued to swing a hot bat for Loss Mitigation, and in the top of the second, his one-out solo homer extended the score to 2-0. Nate retired the Porkswords in order in the bottom of the second.

Loss Mitigation added several insurance runs in the top of the third. Norris led off the inning with a triple, and Bob drove him in with an RBI double that made the score 3-0. Mike then doubled, putting runners on second and third with no outs. Dustin got Nate to ground out to left for the first out of the inning, but Bob scored on the play, extending the Loss Mitigation lead to 4-0. Mike moved to third on the play, but Dustin stranded him, retiring Norris for the second out of the inning.

Nate continued to roll in the bottom of the third, and Loss Mitigation led by four runs through three innings.

Mike kept punishing the Porkswords in the top of the fourth, hitting another one-out solo homer, making the score 5-0.

Down five, the Porkswords cut into the Loss Mitigation lead in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Josh hit a solo homer, putting the Porkswords on the board at 5-1. Dustin followed with a homer, making the score 5-2. When Miller also homered, the Porkswords’ back-to-back-to-back homers had cut the deficit to 5-3. Nate finally recorded the second out of the inning, and the game was postponed due to darkness with the score 5-3.

The game was resumed in week 2, with Loss Mitigation returning the same lineup, and the Porkswords inserting Steve and John into their lineup, each making their 2018 EWL debuts. Norris led off the top of the fifth with a single, but Dustin stranded him, and the score remained 5-3.

Josh went 4-for-5 for the Porkswords, with two singles, a double, a homer, and three runs scored.

Josh started the bottom of the fifth with a double, and he moved to third on Dustin’s sacrifice fly. Miller followed with an RBI single, cutting the score to 5-4. Norris then retired Steve to end the inning with the Porkswords trailing by a run.

Loss Mitigation would add a few more insurance runs for Nate in the final frame. Nate led off with a solo homer, making the score 6-4. Two batters later, Bob doubled, and Mike followed with his third homer in the contest, a two-run bomb to left that extended the Loss Mitigation lead to 8-4. Dustin retired Nate to end the inning, and the Porkswords trailed by four runs heading into their final at-bat.

John, making his first career EWL appearance, doubled in his first at-bat, and he moved to third when Josh followed with a single. With no outs and two runners in scoring position, Dustin singled, scoring John and cutting the score to 8-5. Miller came to the plate as the tying run, and he hit an RBI double to score Josh, making the score 8-6. Steve then came to bat as the tying run, with runners on the corners. He grounded out to deep right-center for the first out of the inning, but both runners were able to score on the play. The two-RBI groundout tied the game at 8-8, and the Porkswords had drawn even with Loss Mitigation. Norris remained on the mound, and John came to the plate for his second career at-bat. He looked calm and collected, and he raked a solo homer to deep left-center, ending the game. The walk-off homer was the first ever by an EWL rookie, particularly a rookie in their first career game. The Porkswords had rallied from four runs down to score five in the bottom of the sixth, beating Loss Mitigation in an epic week one (and carry over to week two) game.

The win moved the Porkswords to 1-1 on the season, and the loss dropped Loss Mitigation to 0-2.
