Brett Shines in First Career EWL Game, Going 4-for-4 to Carry Cheap Goats to 6-5 Win Over Guacamol-yay

In his EWL debut, Brett went 4-for-4 for Cheap Goats, and his solo homer in the bottom of the fifth was the decisive run

In his first game on the Wiffle Diamond, Brett went a perfect 4-for-4 with a single, two doubles, and a solo homer, that turned out to be the winning run in Cheap Goats’ 6-5 season opening win over Guacamol-yay. Christian pitched the complete game win for Cheap Goats, scattering five runs in six innings.

Guacamol-yay took advantage of early questionable fielding by Cheap Goats, pulling ahead in the top of the first. Josh K singled with one out, and he advanced to third when Jude followed with a ground rule double. With one out and two runners in scoring position, Guacamol-yay’s rookie, Sean, tripled, clearing the bases to make the score 2-0. Christian then retired Jan to end the inning.

Cheap Goats bounced back in the bottom of the first. Barilar led off the inning with a single, but pulled up lame with an upper leg injury. Two batters later, Christian hit a one-out single to put runners on the corners. Dinger followed with an RBI single, clearing the bases of the Barilars, tying the score at 2-2. Brett singled in his first career at-bat, but was stranded at first when the hobbled Barilar flew out for the second out of the inning. He would leave the game to ice his leg with a Coors light.

Jude tripled with one out in the top of the second, but Christian stranded him at third, retiring Sean to end the inning, and the score remained 2-2.

Josh K rolled through the bottom of the second, retiring Joey and fanning Christian, maintaining the 2-2 tie.

Jan tripled to start the top of the third, and two batters later, Jude singled. Jan couldn’t score on the play, and Guacamol-yay had runners on the corners with one out. Christian escaped the jam, getting Sean to fly out to center, ending the inning.

Brett doubled with one out in the bottom of the third, but Josh K stranded him, retiring Joey for the second out of the inning.

Guacamol-yay pulled back ahead in the top of the fourth. Jan led off the inning with a solo shot, making the score 3-2. Josh K then hit a ground rule double, and two batters later, Sean hit a one-out RBI single to score Josh K from second, putting Guacamol-yay ahead 4-2. Jan then singled, putting two runners on with one out, but Guacamol-yay couldn’t extend the rally. Christian retired Josh K for the second out of the inning, and Cheap Goats trailed by two runs.

The Goats bounced back in the bottom of the fourth. Josh K struck out Christian to start the inning, but then got into trouble. Dinger singled, and he moved from first to third when Brett followed with a double. With one out and two on, Joey hit a three-run blast to left, putting Cheap Goats ahead 5-4. Josh K retired Christian to end the inning, but had surrendered the lead heading into the fifth.

Christian retired the site in order in the top of the fifth, sending Jude and Sean down consecutively.

Cheap Goats would add an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. Josh K struck out Dinger to start the inning, tying the EWL single-game record for pitching strikeouts, with three. But the next batter, Brett, hit a solo homer to right-center, extending the Cheap Goats lead to 6-4. Josh K then retired Joey to end the inning.

With a two-run lead, Christian remained on the mount to close things out for Cheap Goats in the top of the sixth. Jan singled to start the inning, and he moved from first to second on a Josh K sacrifice fly. Jude followed with a one-out single, scoring Jan from second, cutting the deficit to 6-5. Guacamol-yay had the tying run on first and the go-ahead run at the plate, but the rally ended there. Christian retired Sean for the second out of the inning, stranding the runner and giving Cheap Goats the 6-5 win.

The win moved Cheap Goats to 1-0 on the season. The loss dropped Guacamol-yay to 0-1.
