In one of the best games in the history of the EWL playoffs, Cookies & Cream made a remarkable comeback only to fall short as Questionable Outfit held on to take a 2-1 series lead with a dramatic 11-10 victory.

With the series tied at 1-1, Cookies & Cream were the home team and they send Dinger to the mound. After losing in game 1, he was hoping for a better performance in game 3, but he got into trouble early. The game’s first batter, Tom, went deep to left-center, and the solo homer put Questionable Outfit ahead 1-0. Dinger was able to rebound and retire the next two batters to end the inning and avoid a big early deficit.

Game 1 winner, Reilly, was Questionable Outfit’s starting pitcher for game 3. He cruised through the bottom of the first, retiring the side in order.

Things got worse for Dinger and Cookies & Cream in the top of the second, as Questionable opened up a sizable lead. Reilly was retired for the first out of the inning, but Questionable rallied with one out. Tom singled, and the next batter, Bob, crushed a two-run bomb to right, making the score 3-0. Morrison followed with a solo homer, and the back-to-back homers extended the lead to 4-0. Reilly was retired for the second out of the inning, but Cookies & Cream found themselves in a hole.

Cookies would put a small dent in the Questionable lead in the bottom of the second. Joey was retired for the first out of the inning, but Vassallo followed with a solo homer, cutting the score to 4-1. Reilly then retired Dinger to end the inning.

Questionable would blow the game open in the top of the third. Tom led off with a single, and for the second consecutive inning, Bob launched a two-run homer into deep right-center, extending the lead to 6-1. Morrison followed with a double off the fence, forcing Cookies to turn to the bullpen. They brought in Blose for a rare pitching appearance, and the first batter he faced, Reilly hit an RBI single that scored Morrison, making the score 7-1. Blose would retire the next two batters to end the inning, but Questionable had taken a six-run lead.

Reilly retired the side in order in the bottom of the third, and Questionable Outfit were in command of game 3.

After retiring Morrison to start the top of the fourth, Blose allowed a single to Reilly, followed by a double to Tom. Questionable had runners on second and third with one out, and it looked as if the game would get out of hand with Bob coming to the plate. But Blose was able to retire Bob, stranding both runners and escaping the inning without damage.

Down 7-1, Cookies & Cream showed signs of life in the bottom of the fourth. Vassallo led off the inning with a solo homer, his second of the game, making the score 7-2. Dinger followed with a single and moved to second when Blose grounded out for the first out of the inning. The next batter, Joey, crushed a two-run homer to left, and Cookies & Cream had narrowed the deficit to 7-4. Reilly ended the rally there, retiring Vassallo to end the inning.

After pulling within three runs, Cookies couldn’t hold Questionable Outfit in check, as they pulled back ahead in the top of the fifth. Morrison led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Reilly single to make the score 8-4. Two batters later, Bob crushed his third homer of the game, another two-run shot, making the score 10-4. Blose retired Morrison for the second out of the inning, but Cookies & Cream would once again trail by six runs.

Down 10-4, Cookies & Cream made things very interesting in the bottom of the fifth. Dinger led off the inning with a solo homer, making the score 10-5. Blose followed with a single, and the next batter, Joey, crushed his second homer of the game, and the two-run bomb cut the deficit to 10-7. After Reilly retired Vassallo, Dinger came to the plate and blasted his second homer of the inning, and the score was 10-8. Blose followed with a solo shot, and the back-to-back jacks pulled Cookies & Cream within a run. For the first time in the 2014 season, Questionable Outfit was forced to make a call to the bullpen with Reilly on the mound. Morrison was called in for relief, and the first batter he faced, Joey, hit yet another solo homer to deep left field, and Cookies & Cream had miraculously tied the game at 10-10. Morrison then retired Vassallo for the second out of the inning, but Cookies & Cream had scored six runs and homered five times in the inning to pull from six runs behind and tie the game heading into the final frame.

Blose remained on the mound for Cookies & Cream in the top of the sixth, and he retired the first batter of the inning, Reilly. The next batter, Tom, fouled off multiple pitches and looked frustrated at the plate. But like they have all year, Questionable Outfit got offense when they needed it, and Tom blasted a solo homer to deep center field, putting Questionable Outfit back on top 11-10. Bob followed with a single, but Blose retired Morrison to end the inning.

After coming back from a huge deficit to tie the game, Cookies once again found themselves trailing heading into their last at-bat. They started at the top of the order, and Morrison retired Dinger for the first out of the inning. Down to one out, one of the game’s most feared hitters, Blose, faced off against one of the game’s other most feared hitters, Morrison, who was pitching. Morrison won this battle getting Blose to fly out to the mound for the second out of the inning, ending the game, and giving Questionable Outfit the win.

Despite nearly blowing a massive lead, Questionable Outfit held on to win game 3, giving them a 2-1 series lead in the best-of-seven Wiffle Series.

Reilly bounced back from his game 1 struggles and followed Bob’s game 2 perfect game with a strong performance on the mound, holding Eastbound & Dahn in check as Questionable Outfit took a 2-1 series lead after an 8-2 game 3 victory.

Nate, who was utterly dominant in game 1 of the series, returned to the mound as the game 3 starter for Eastbound & Dahn. Things didn’t fare so well this time around, as Questionable Outfit appeared to have figured out his breaking ball. Tom led off the game with a solo homer, and Questionable was ahead 1-0 early. Morrison would then double, and he scored when Bob followed with a double, making the score 2-0. Reilly grounded out to left-center for the first out of the inning, and Bob moved to third on the play. Tom followed with a one-out single, scoring Bob and putting Questionable ahead 3-0. Morrison followed with a single, and just when it looked like Questionable Outfit would blow the game open, Nate got Bob to fly out to the mound for the second out of the inning, stranding two runners.

Down three runs, Eastbound would respond in the bottom of the first. Ivan led off the a single, and Hartley followed with a two-run shot to left-center, making the score 3-2. It looked as if Reilly’s struggles would continue, but he retired the next two batters, ending the inning and maintaining a one run lead.

The struggles continued for Nate and Eastbound in the top of the second inning. Reilly led off the inning with a double and moved to third when Kimble grounded out for the first out of the inning. The next batter, Morrison, crushed a two-run homer, and the score was 5-2. Bob followed with a single, and Reilly collected his second hit of the inning with a two-run home run, extending the Questionable Outfit lead to 7-2. Eastbound had seen enough from Nate, and after only 1.5 innings he was replaced by Helal on the mound. Helal retired Tom for the second out of the inning, and Eastbound would trail by 5 runs early.

Ivan would single with one out in the bottom of the second, but Eastbound couldn’t cut the deficit, as Reilly retired Hartley to strand the runner.

Morrison doubled to start the top of the third, and he moved to second when Bob grounded out to right for the first out of the inning. Reilly followed with a one-out double, scoring Morrison to extend the lead to 8-2. Helal retired Kimble to end the inning, and Questionable Outfit had a commanding six run lead.

Reilly maintained the lead in the bottom half of the inning. After retiring Helal, Ivan hit a one-out triple, but Eastbound couldn’t capitalize, as Hartley was retired for the second out of the inning.

Helal held the lead in the top of the fifth, pitching another scoreless frame. Reilly matched him in the bottom of the fifth, getting Christian to fly out to the mound before striking out Nate to retire the side.

Questionable couldn’t add to their lead in the top of the sixth, as Helal retired Morrison and Bob. Helal had sent down 7 of the last 8 batters he faced, but got no run support to spark a comeback.

Down to their final at-bat, Eastbound went quietly in the bottom of the sixth, as Reilly got both Helal and Ivan to fly out, ending the inning and the game.

The 8-2 win put Questionable Outfit ahead 2-1 in the best-of-five series and one win away from clinching their second consecutive berth in the Wiffle Series.

Questionable Outfit held off a late Ham Slams rally to complete a three-game sweep in the first round, advancing to the 2013 EWL Wiffle Series

The Ham Slams went down swinging, but Questionable Outfit’s offense was ultimately too much as they won game 3 9-6, completing a three-game sweep and advancing to the 2013 EWL Wiffle Series. They await the conclusion of the other first round series between Eastbound & Dahn and Cookies & Cream, which will determine their opponent in the best-of-seven championship series.

With Charlie out for the game, the Ham Slams put Josh on the mound. He got into trouble early, as Questionable Outfit took at early lead in the top of the first. Tom led off the inning with a single, and he moved to second when Reilly grounded out to left for the first out of the inning. Bob followed with a single off the fence, and Tom scored on the play to put Questionable Outfit ahead 1-0. With one-out and a runner on first, Mike blasted a two-run bomb to left, making the score 3-0. Tom followed with a single, but Josh ended the rally there, getting Reilly to ground out to left for the second out of the inning.

Questionable Outfit put their ace, Bob, on the mound to close out the series. He retired the Ham Slams’ first batter, Kyle, who grounded out to right. Anthony followed with a one-out double, but Bob got Steve to fly out to center, stranding the runner and ending the inning.

Questionable Outfit got right back to work in the top of the second, and added to their lead. Bob led off the inning with a solo shot to right, making the score 4-0. Mike followed with his second homer of the game game, and the back-to-back home runs pushed the Questionable Outfit lead to 5-0. Tom followed with a double, and Reilly drove him in with a two-run blast to left, pushing the score to 7-0. Josh finally registered an out when Bob grounded out to center, but the next batter, Mike, doubled. Tom followed with a double, driving in Mike, and the score was 8-0. The inning ended there, as Reilly flew out to right for the second out of the inning, but Questionable Outfit had opened up an eight-run lead.

Josh led off the bottom of the second with a single, but as he was trying to advance to second for a double, he was caught in between bases for the first out of the inning. Bob then retired Kyle for the second out, ending the inning.

Up 8-0, Bob added more of his own run support, leading off the inning with a solo homer to right. Josh avoided another big inning, retiring the next two batters, but Questionable Outfit was up nine.

Anthony led off the bottom of the third with a single. Steve grounded out for the first out of the inning, and as Anthony was rounding from first to third, he overran third base and was tagged out by Bob, ending the inning.

Josh finally pitched a perfect frame in the top of the fourth, retiring the Questionable Outfit side in order.

Bob retired Josh to lead off the bottom of the fourth, but the Slams finally got on the board when Kyle hit a one-out solo homer, making the score 9-1. The Ham Slams couldn’t extend the inning, as Bob retired Anthony to end the inning.

The Ham Slams showed signs of life in the bottom of the fifth, and their fifth inning rally made the game interesting. Steve led off the inning with a single, and the next batter, Josh, hit a two-run homer through the tree in left, making the score 9-3. Kyle followed with a single, and after Anthony flew out to the mound for the first out of the inning, Steve crushed a two-run home run, cutting the deficit to 9-5. Josh followed with a single, but the rally ended there, as Bob retired Kyle to end the inning.

Josh retired Reilly to lead off the top of the sixth, and after Bob hit a one-out single, Mike grounded out to right to end the inning.

Trailing 9-5, the Ham Slams would need a four-run inning to extend the game and their season. Anthony led off the inning with a solo homer, cutting the score to 9-6. Steve flew out to right for the first out of the inning, but Josh followed with a one-out single. It looked as if the Ham Slams would rally, but Bob got Kyle to ground out to right for the second out, ending the game.

Questionable Outfit’s 9-6 win clinched a three-game sweep of the Ham Slams, and earned the squad a berth in the 2013 EWL Wiffle Series. The Ham Slams were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year.

Caucasians Explode Back Into Wiffle Series with 10-0 Romp in Game 3

Down two games and heading on the road, the Caucasian Vaginas had their backs against the wall heading into Game 3. Rather than fold, they erupted offensively, pounding the Fish Sticks 10-0 and pulling within a game of tying the series heading into Game 4.

The Caucasians had tried inverting their batting order in Game 2 to spark some offense, but the strategy failed. The potent Caucasians offense had scored only one run in Games 1 and 2 combined, while their Pitch King Guthrie had been shaken in Game 1. When they shuffled the lineup in Game 3, no one batted an eye, but Guthrie’s call to start Higgins ahead of himself on the mound shocked the Fish Sticks and the whole wiffleball world.

The Sticks sent Dinger to the mound fresh off his dominating shutout in Game 1. However, it didn’t take long for him to give up his first run of the Wiffle Series, as the Caucasians came out swinging in Game 3. Guthrie led off the game with a single, and the next batter, Morrison, put the Caucasians ahead right out of the gate. He crushed a two-run blast to deep leftcenter field, and the Caucasians were off and running. Dinger settled down to retire Higgins and Les and end the top of the first, but it wouldn’t be long before the Caucasians were back at it.

Down 2-0, the Sticks came to the plate in the bottom of the first. Higgins retired Blose, who flew out to the mound, for the first out of the inning. Dinger followed with a one-out single, his first hit of the Wiffle Series, but he was stranded at first when Higgins got Joey to ground out to Morrison in left for the second out of the inning.

The Caucasians repeated the first inning in the top of the second, as Guthrie led off with a single. With a man on first, Morrison came to the plate and hit another bomb, his second two-run homer of the game, putting the Caucasians up 4-0. Higgins followed by flying out to right field for the first out of the inning, but the Caucasian rally would continue. Les singled with one out, and Guthrie followed with his second single of the inning to put runners on first and second. The next batter, Morrison, hit a rope down the left field line. He would race to second for a double, and both Les and Guthrie would score to put the Caucasians up 6-0 through one and a half innings. Morrison had 6 RBI in his first three at-bats, setting a playoff record (that he would later break). Higgins grounded out to center for the second out of the inning, stranding Morrison at second, but the Caucasians had opened up a six run lead early.

Vassallo grounded out to lead off the bottom of the second, and Blose followed with a one-out single. But Higgins stranded the runner at second, retiring Dinger for the second out of the inning.

Up 6-0, the Caucasians stepped on the Fish Sticks throats in the top of the third. Guthrie led off the inning with a solo homer, pushing the lead to 7-0. Morrison followed with a solo homer, his third home run of the game, a playoff record, and his seventh RBI of the game, also a playoff record. With the score 8-0, Higgins came to the plate and slammed yet another solo homer, making back-to-back-to-back home runs, giving the Caucasians a 9-0 lead, and chasing the Sticks’ starter Dinger from the game. The Sticks had been shaken, and down nine runs they called Vassallo from the bullpen to make his first career appearance on the mound. He started off great, striking out Les for the second out of the inning, ending the disastrous third for the Sticks, but the damage was done.

The Sticks were unable to figure out Higgins, and starting in the bottom of the third he got on a roll that would last the duration of the game. He retired Joey and Vassallo in order for a perfect third inning, and the Caucasians led by nine runs through three innings.

Vassallo got a taste of the Caucasian fever in the top of the fourth, as Guthrie led off with a solo homer, his second home run and fifth hit of the game, putting the Caucasians up 10-0. He was able to shake it off, however, and retired Morrison and Higgins to end the inning.

Higgins continued to roll in the bottom of the fourth, as Blose and Dinger were both retired by Morrison in left to preserve the shutout.

The Caucasians had their first scoreless inning of the game in the top of the fifth, as Vassallo retired Les and Guthrie in order, the first perfect inning by a Fish Sticks pitcher since Game 2.

Joey and Vassallo were sent down consecutively in the bottom of the fifth, as the Sticks were unable to put up a fight.

Morrison flew out to Vassallo at the mound for the first out of the top of the sixth, but Higgins followed with a one-out double. The Caucasians couldn’t add to their already insurmountable lead, however, as Vassallo retired Les to end the sixth, stranding Higgins at second and sending the game to the final frame.

Down ten runs, the Fish Sticks couldn’t mound a rally at any point in the game, concluding in the bottom of the sixth. Blose doubled to lead off the inning, but Higgins stranded him at second base, retiring Dinger and Joey consecutively to end the game. After falling behind 2-0 at home, the Caucasians had stormed back on the road, sending a message that this series was far from over. The Sticks still lead 2-1 heading into Game 4, as the Caucasians will look to even the series on the road.

Guthrie Tosses Perfect Game to Send Caucasians to the Championship Series

Guthrie became the first player in EWL history to throw a perfect game, capping a sweep of Pumice on Slow!

A week after throwing a 1-hit shutout in Game 1 of their series against Pumice on Slow!, Guthrie threw the first perfect game in the history of the EWL in Game 3 in the most dominant single-game pitching performance the league has ever seen. The win clinched a 3-0 sweep of Pumice! by the Caucasians, and sent them to the league’s first Wiffle Series.

Pumice! needed a win to continue their 2011 season, and their best hope was their ace Gaurav, who they sent to the mound to start Game 3. It didn’t even take one batter for Pumice! to fall into the trap that had tanked games for them time and time again during the regular season. Morrison, the game’s first batter, hit a catchable ball that could have resulted in the first out of the top of the first. Instead, Morrison was safe at first, and a series of fielding and throwing errors resulted in Morrison rounding the bases for a leadoff inside-the-park home run, immediately putting Pumice on Slow! in a 1-0 hole. The next batter, Guthrie, blasted a home run to deep left field, and the Caucasians had a 2-0 lead before the first out of the game had been recorded. Frosty followed with a single, and it looked as if the Caucasians would run away with the game and the series. But Gaurav settled down, retiring Higgins and Morrison, stranding Frosty at second base, and keeping the game within reach.

Guthrie continued to bewilder Pumice! batters, retiring Luke and Gaurav in order in the bottom of the first.

Gaurav had a more routine inning in the top of the second, as he retired Guthrie for the first out of the inning. Frosty followed with his second single of the game, but Gaurav stranded him at first, getting Higgins to ground out to left for the second out of the inning.

With the score 2-0, Guthrie retired John and Holly consecutively in the bottom of the second.

The Caucasians added to their lead in the top of the third when Morrison led off the inning with his second homer of the game, putting the Vaginas ahead 3-0. Gaurav then retired Guthrie and Les in order to keep the deficit at three runs.

Pumice! couldn’t answer in the bottom of the third, as Luke and Gaurav were sent down in order.

Gaurav got back on track in the top of the fourth, retiring Higgins and Morrison, both by groundouts to left field.

Guthrie continued to dominate in the bottom of the fourth, as he sent down Brad and Holly to keep the score at 3-0.

Guthrie singled to lead off the top of the fifth, but Gaurav retired Les for the first out of the inning when he flew out to left field. Frosty hit a one-out single, which moved Guthrie to third, putting runners on the corners with one out for Morrison. Morrison could have effectively ended the game with a big hit, but Gaurav got him to groundout to centerfield, stranding both runners and keeping hope alive for Pumice!

Pumice! couldn’t figure out Guthrie, however, as he continued to mow down hitters, retiring Luke and Gaurav in order to end the fifth.

Up 3-0 and down to their final at-bat, the Caucasians added insurance runs in the top of the sixth. Guthrie flew out to left for the first out of the inning, but Les and Frosty followed with back-to-back solo homers, giving the Caucasians a 5-0 lead. Gaurav retired Higgins for the second out of the inning, and Pumice! would need 5 runs in the bottom half of the sixth to keep their season alive.

Heading into the bottom of the sixth, word has spread on the sidelines that Guthrie had a chance to throw the league’s first ever perfect game. At this point he had already gone the deepest into a game any pitcher had without giving up a hit. Brad grounded out to left for the first out of the inning, and Guthrie was one out away from perfection. The final batter was John, who took a series of pitches and fouled a few off. After several pitches, he finally hit a liner to left. Les had some trouble handling the ball at first, but eventually snagged it just in time to retire John. Guthrie had ended the series, sweeping Pumice on Slow! with a perfect game, retiring all 12 batters in order. He dominated Pumice! throughout the course of the game, frustrating them with his ClawBall as they repeatedly couldn’t make solid contact. The Caucasians had won 5-0, and advanced to the championship series, as they awaited the finale of the other series to see who they would play.

Game Notes:
– Pumice! had three chances to break up the no-hitter, the closest call coming in the top of the fifth when Gaurav crushed a pitch to deep left, but it hit the tree and Morrison caught it for an out.
– Guthrie has now given up only 1 hit and no earned runs in 12 innings in the 2011 playoffs.
– Morrison went 2 for 5 with 2 HR and 2 RBI and Frosty went 4 for 4 with 3 singles, 1 HR, and 1 RBi to lead the Caucasians offensively.
– Pumice! ended their season in disappointing fashion, but they played hard until the final out and were great representatives of the EWL.
